    “Natural and honest” I think I know what you mean, but I think it’s more accurate to use the word, “real.” That’s not a diss or comparison with Dale either- they are just different people and both excellent.

    I got to meet Jamie at Chicagoland because I won a Gearwrench tools competition. It was awesome. Jamie was so nice, and down to earth. He answered all our questions, and when we ran out of those he just stayed and talked with us. I actually felt bad for him, because he had to go put on his race gear and get in the car like a half hour later. How you shift from chiiling to racing in that amount of time is beyond me. It's great to see him on Race Hub. He's an excellent ambassador for the sport.

    Really interesting to learn about how Ganassi was making so much downforce in the wind tunnel. I do remember the 42 car being quite stable and grounded on the bigger tracks like Fontana and Michigan back then.

    From what I remember the dodge bodies were a bit more draggy. The evernham, Penske, ganasi were all really good at 1.5 and 2 mile ovals. They werent that good in the superspeedways and short tracks.

    And these were pre-claw template and pre-laser inspection cars. They had common templates but you could bend a lot of the car and its body to move the air how you needed it. The snout nosed Charger body was the extreme of this, but the aero balance was off and they ended up reverting to a rounder design. Those were fun times. I don’t think I enjoyed the cars look as much until the last phase of the previous gen and the current gen.

    I wanted Jamie in the #2 car. To me that would have been a perfect fit. He was driving for Rusty in the Busch series as he stated, but also.. He was dating Rusty’s daughter at the time. I know that the later half of my statement might not have anything g to do with him joining Penske, but it just seemed like it would have fit. And when he was driving the #42 Texaco car, they were driving dodge’s. And Penske was driving Dodge’s as well. So from a manufacturing standpoint, he would have already been in fold. IMHO, Roush, should have never happened. I just felt so bad for him, because he just felt like he was outta place over there.

    That’s funny in my head. Jamie is and has always been a high class actor in racing like Mark Martin, Rusty, Jimmy Johnson; just polite, calm, respectful- but aggressive. Everybody is crowing about “how good the racing is” but I’m not seeing it- to many whiny pants. That’s part of what makes McDowell so appealing- just a positive, happy competitor. Jamie is just that kind of person.

    This is exactly how nascar needs to be 90 less HP but 30% more down force. Let the teams be creative. Put a spending cap on the season so the big teams don’t run away with spending and let the brightest minds shine. Next Gen spec cars will be the death of nascar.

But all of you are right, he needs to be given a full time lead broadcasting gig. Rick Allen doesn't cut it, in my opinion. Give that job to Jamie.

    When he talks about the people who were calling him around 2005 and mentions Joe Gibbs - just imagine how different the sport would be. Instead of JJ Yeley going to the 18 in 2006 and flopping until Kyle Busch gets hired to replace him in 2008, if Jamie goes to Gibbs in the 18 that probably never happens? Jamie in the 18 wouldve been on par with the 20 and 11, which were both winning cars. Joe Gibbs would no longer have a need to grab Kyle Busch for 2008. Who knows where Busch goes from there, and things would look so different. It's also crazy that Jamie never got a win in the 42, because he was genuinely really quick and they were in the battle to win most weeks. He absolutely got robbed at Rockingham in 2004.

  • @Nishil

    @Nishil

    Unfortunately I think McMurray would’ve performed the same as Yeley. At the time, Gibbs operated their cars independently. Interstate Batteries signed a deal that was considered below average with Gibbs in 2000 for 8 years till 2007. However, sponsorship rates blew up and soon the 18 car was essentially working with a backmarkers salary towards the mid 2000s. Even Labonte finished like 24th the year before Yeley joined. In 2008, Gibbs signed Mars on and the rest was history. Edit: McMurray probably would have run a little better than Yeley but the car would have limited him heavily

    In those days, the small teams could show speed, mainly because a lot of them were using older motors that were proven, but deemed obsolete from the big boys while the big boys were testing out new stuff. But by the time Speedweeks rolled around, all the bugs were worked out of the new stuff and the small guys werent as impressive. Morgan Shepherd in 2005 also showed crazy speed in testing
