The best song from one of the best films ever made. The film that accurately predicted in 1968 that the counter-culture of the 60s would die because of an over-fixation on drugs. "We blew it".

Out of the blue I heard the lyrics in my head tonight and for the last 30 minutes I have listened to it over and over and over...it IS that damn good. I've remembered this song after all these years and it's like listening to it for the first time...brilliant!

My brother saw easy rider in the theatre in 1969 when he was 13. He told me it cost him a lot, two dollars lol. The story I heard was that Peter Fonda wanted to fire Dennis Hopper after they fought on set. I loved the scene in the New Orleans crypt cemetery 👍

LYRICS "Darkness at the break of noon Shadows even the silver spoon The handmade blade, the child's balloon Eclipses both the sun and moon To understand you know too soon There is no sense in trying As pointed threats, they bluff with scorn Suicide remarks are torn From the fool's gold mouthpiece the hollow horn Plays wasted words, proves to warn That he not busy being born is busy dying Temptation's page flies out the door You follow, find yourself at war Watch waterfalls of pity roar You feel to moan but unlike before You discover that you'd just be one more Person crying So don't fear WHEN you hear A foreign sound to your ear It's alright, Ma, I'm only sighing A question in your nerves is lit Yet you know there is no answer fit To satisfy, insure you not to quit To keep it in your mind and not forget That it is not he or she or them or it That you belong to Although the masters make the rules For the wise men and the fools I got nothing, Ma, to live up to For them that must bow down to authority That they do not respect in any degree Who despise their jobs, their destinies Speak jealously of them that are free Cultivate their flowers to be Nothing more than something they invest in

A good choice. Iv'e heard Dylan sing this before. Bob Dylan is one of the greatest and most Prolific song writers of all time, but let's face it.....not the best singer although it doesn't matter with some of his songs. McGuinn was definitely the best choice for this particular song.

McGuinn playing Dylan. Doesn't get any better. Alas, having seen the movie many times, I will forever associate this song with the horrific ending. It's one of those movie moments when the soundtrack is indelibly linked to what happens on the screen, e.g., the shower scene in "Psycho" with Bernard Hermann's haunting score.

Director Dennis Hopper asked Peter to talk to the statue as if he were talking to his mother, who died via suicide when Peter was 10 years old. Peter didn't want to do it, as he had never confronted his feelings about his mother. But Hopper insisted, which is why you hear Peter call the statue "Mother", and he states that he both loves her and hates her, which expresses his conflicted emotions. This scene persuaded Bob Dylan to allow the use of his song "It's Alright Ma" in one of the final scenes, which contains lyrics referencing suicide. Peter told Dylan, "I need to hear those words", and he agreed to its use.
