Everyone seems to missing this HUGE point. That property manager lady just SWATTED an airman who was having a FaceTime argument. The cop didn’t once verify the correct apartment nor the situation. He just took the lady’s word for it, saw a random tenant with a gun (IN HIS OWN HOUSE) and shot him! That’s the very definition of being swatted! This cops needs to do time for this murder

@@thewickedone9637Would you agree that it's a bit foolish to open a door to a cop with a gun in your hand? I mean, whether this man was acting within his legal boundaries is one thing. I understand. The law is the law. He has a right to hold a gun in his own home. But there are a lot of things that are legal but still foolish to do. I'm not defending the cop. I believe in the law and legal justice. If he's guilty, hes guilty. But as for that young Airman, I think this was a very poor decision. A decision that can provoke a fatal mistake.

That gave him reasonable suspicion to do an investigation and ask questions. Obviously we know after the fact he was innocent, but that’s information the officer didn’t have at the time. So let’s look at it in the totality of circumstance and not hindsight because for the investigation they will go based off the information the cop was provided at the time to decide if charges will be brought upon the officer. Officer was called to investigate a possible domestic violence, cop knocks/announces himself multiple times, and a person he has never seen before opens the door with a gun. “But the gun was aimed down” How long does it take to flick your wrist? Cops have been shot through doors upon knocking, so now they learn in the academy never to stand in front of the door as it’s called the “fatal funnel”. With that being said he had every right and the duty to protect his home because it could had been criminal lying and pretending to be a police officer. The police officer shot this man in his own home and the man was not even on the easement of his home. Furthermore I do not see any reason to claim self defense. He did not have the weapon aimed at the police officer in an aggressive manner nor did he give any reasonable cause for aggression. The officer unfortunately acted on assumptions verses facts. From the Officer Hiding, when the armed Veteran goes with his weapon to the door, looks thru the eye lens and sees nobody, his panic levels probably stayed the same or spiked. The sight of a police officer in the eye lens would have most likely than not prompted him to lower his guard, put the gun down in a nearby counter, and have a cordial & respectful conversation with th e officer as both are servers of their country in different ways. The outcome would have been entirely something else. If the police officer had maybe exercised more common sense and possibly been less scared. If the officer was comfortable enough with the situation to go up a few stories no partner. Why would he fear gunfire through a door? Anyone that’s ever had their door knocked on by police. This is wrong. Even the lady who called the police should be held accountable. How was she outside and being able to follow the supposed argument so clearly, and yet still directed the police to the wrong flat? No excuse for the police whatsoever. If there was a fight going on, they would have heard voices from outside, if the lady was telling the truth, so why even insisting? It's not as if someone inside the flat called them. Strangely, we still have not heard about a fight happening even at a different flat near the victim's one. I hope that lady will be tormented with guilt for the rest of her life. Not that we should not alert the police if we had good reasons to believe that someone' s life may be in danger, but listening to her conversation with the police, she sounds just like someone who likes putting her nose where she shouldn't. Imagine your neighbours calling the police because you seem to be arguing with someone in your flat.

As he is stepping back with his arm raised and gun pointed down while following the officers instructions at 4:13 just a second later the cop unloads multiple shots not even assessing the situation. The young man was the only person in this video with common sense once he realized this was actually the police and not someone trying to rob him. This guy just doesn't have qualities to be a police officer, he is too easily spooked. I don't say it in a negative sense, as this is probably a great quality in many many occupations, just not police. In police you need hardened Dirty Harry-type guys who would not even flinch when the gun is pointed at their head and call it a bluff until they see the guy is really about to pull the trigger, then they act. I know nowadays it's probably hard to find those guys so maybe they should just cut the numbers by half and double the wage of those that qualify, as they would probably be 2 times more efficient anyway, and also much cheaper in the end as they would not drag down their own departments with lawsuits.

Is first gut reaction was to keep firing until his clip was empty. You would think his cop training would have taught him to seek cover, not lean into the bullets being fired at him, oh wait there were no bullets being fired at him. Now all his cop buddies are going to pretend that it was a justified killing. His Sheriff is going to state some BS about a department policy that doesn't break Florida's stand your ground law or the US Constitution. Then the courts are going to let this menace to society get away with the murder of an innocent man serving his country as a soldier. Then there will be years of appeals until it makes it to the US Supreme Court who ultimately decide in the favor of the government. Maybe I need a good copsplaining to understand why people don't trust the cops or the courts.

I remember a similar case of a man named Ryan Whitaker. He and his girlfriend were making dinner and playing video games late at night. They were being loud and obnoxious playing Crash Bandicoot against each other, and someone upstairs got mad and called the police on them. In the recording of the upstairs neighbor call to the police you can tell he was clearly lying and literally said something along the lines of "I'll say yes to whatever get's yall here faster." The cops arrive and it's the same exact situation of knocking and then hiding from the peephole. Ryan had also been getting pranked with loud knocks on his door at night and didn't hear the officers announce their presence due to music being played in his apartment, just like in this case where Mr Fortson was on a face time call and didn't hear this officers announcement. So he opened it with a gun pointed down just like this young man. He sees 1 officer who was hiding to the left and then gets shot in the back from the right. In that instance, Ryan was shot as he knelt down and placed the gun on the floor (never pointed at officers) and the other hand raised in surrender. The officer who shot him was given a 240-hour suspension and remains employed as a police officer. Never prosecuted and didn't even lose his job. I imagine the same will happen here. In this case, this woman clearly had better intentions than the other caller I mentioned, but everyone needs to understand that any time you call a police officer to resolve an issue, there is a chance that coward will kill the first thing his mind can't immediately identify as nonthreatening. Giving the police information you do not know to be correct, no matter how well-intentioned, can be a death sentence for an innocent person. I don't lay the blame at her feet, but I imagine she will never call the police again. Even if she has every reason to do so at a later date to protect herself and others, I doubt she will and that's a sad reality many people deal with. Better to let a crime slide than potentially call someone who will cause an even worse situation. Let this be a lesson - NEVER open your door. If you're unsure then speak through the door to see who is knocking and hiding from view. If they claim they're an officer but still won't show you themselves then tell them to have dispatch call you. Even then you can tell them to fuck off and get a warrant or you can choose to open the door and speak to them. Of course, this also poses the risk of putting you in direct contact with someone with a bruised ego because you didn't immediately respect their authority. If they're a normal person they'll understand and ask you what questions they will...but if not...then it puts you at the mercy of someone who will try to escalate the situation as much as they can so they can bury your nose into the ground put you in handcuffs and give you their favorite charges - Resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer. Does it matter if there was no crime committed to be arrested for in the first place? nope. Does it matter that the "assault" committed against the officer was the scrapes and bruises on their knuckles from beating you? Nope. Charges that will cost you your job and all future gainful employment. Charges that will be expensive to tackle. Charges you might just have to take a plea deal for, just to minimize the consequences. How humiliating. We get beat and our rights abused all for the sake of another man's ego and they make YOU "plea" for mercy and forgiveness. Even if your story goes viral and the entire world sees what happens, rarely can you expect any form of justice. The officer will go on, with the same career, and millions of police apologists calling them a hero, and telling their fellow citizens you should simply follow all police orders and none of this would have happened. I imagine Roger Fortson was quite good at following orders given his career, but how long did he have to do so here? You know he wasn't given a chance to do as commanded. Even if you get enough public support to put pressure on the legal system to take action, the best you can hope for is to get a settlement. The best justice you can hope for is being handed a bag of money and being told to shut up and consider the matter over. and how can we blame people for taking it? It's that or nothing. Another humiliation.

The only thing I can assume why in this instant Roger assume it was a stranger and not the police, is because the deputy knocked a few times but chose to stay of peephole sight without identifying himself for 10-20 seconds. Only in last 10-20 seconds before the deputy shot Roger, he announce sheriff deputy once and again a few seconds before he shot Roger. Roger did not have enough time to put away his weapon. He is a service man i dont think he will deliberately avoid or cause trouble with the police. There was inaudible audio saying police. Was it Roger who said because at then the deputy hasnt announce himself and was knocking the door and staying away from the peephole? No one inside at this point would have police was outside. Did he thought a stranger was outside and wanted to call police for help? It doesnt clear the deputy action of why he shot Roger, it just confuses me why he shot Roger. This could honestly be a 5 to 10 mins conversation of just clearing up the incident the lady reported. It was a misunderstanding caused by the deputy that a stranger was outside instead of the police and made fatal by the deputy action.

Also didn’t ask her how she now knows it’s 1401. 2. Approaching a potentially dangerous situation alone when partner was nearby. 3. Knocked without identifying who he was, stepped to the side of the door (so if someone then checked they wouldn’t have seen anyone). And only after hearing someone did he identify himself. 4. Shot well before assessing the situation and never got into an armed stance. Literally just said back up and shot Roger. 5. Told Roger to drop the weapon AS and AFTER he shot him. To also emphasize error #4. He never ever had his gun drawn, asked to drop the weapon, and allow time to drop said weapon. You get numb to a lot of these, but I audibly gasped at this on. First he was eavesdropping to make a predetermination, then he knocks without announcing himself, steps away from the door as if he was trying to be deceptive, then knocks and announces himself and the door is immediately opened and he is greeted with a man holding a gun? His first response is to shoot someone over a domestic disturbance??? As a random officer you have no clue as to why the man would come to the door with a gun. He could've been harrassed in this area, got into a previous altercation with someone who attempted to enter his home, someone could've previously threatened him etc. There are MANY reasons as to why someone would go grab their gun after an unannounced knock at their door when they aren't expecting company. This type of behavior has been justified and tolerated too long, specifically against Black people. We've all heard of the disproportionate prejudices Black folk have dealt with in these situations compared to the leniencies white folk have been given in similar but more aggressive situations, ie brandishing a knife or firearm at police and being talked down and de-escalated. Its a shame and grossly disgusting. And its further compounded because law enforcement is aware of this and how they may be depicted and haven't seemed to do anything to dispel that whatsoever This shouldn't be a Black and white thing, but a right and wrong thing. And police across the country have shown they're completely incapable to better handle these types of situations universally. No person regardless of color deserves to lose their lives unjustly, particularly in a situation in which the "authority" that is supposed to protect is often the authority that is destroying. Roger was far too young to have had this happen and that hurts my heart.

Why would anyone in his right mind, knowing that the police were outside their door greet the officer with a gun in their hand? Is that smart? Even if it’s legal, why spend extra time to grab your gun when a cop is knocking at your door?

I can't stamd all the people saying the officer announced himself. How do you even know where the airmen is in the apartment. If he was back in a bedroom, it would have barely been audible.

Exactly the cop was banging on the door the first time without identifying himself and being paranoid and hiding from the Peephole. The kid was probably retrieving his weapon when the cop identified himself but still continued to hide from the peephole that made the Kid even more suspicious.

Maybe don't answer the door to a police officer with a gun in your hand?

I'm puzzled how the cop got off on the wrong floor and went out of his way to avoid being seen through the victims peep hole.

Cops are paranoid and afraid they will be shot. By doing this it makes us scared and paranoid because we cannot see who is banging on our door.

Absolutely horrifying. This cops hid from the peep hole until the door was opened and shot that young man without a second thought. What in the actual F.

Each time, he made sure not to be seen in the peephole, furthering the homeowners distrust that this might not be the police at all. Maybe someone playing like they are the police because he knew he didnt call 911 so to him there would be no reason for police to be there...but each time he looked, he couldnt see anyone in the peephole.

The most intelligent thing this officer displayed was pressing the correct number on the elevator
