Cinematographer Roger Deakins is no stranger to practical lighting. In this video essay, Deakins explains his approach to practical lighting and why it isn’t just about convenience, it’s about the storytelling. As the cinematographer for such gorgeously lit movies as The Shawshank Redemption, The Village, and Sicario, Deakins knows a thing or two about practical lighting.
Using practical lighting in film has two direct and positive effects. First, practical lighting establishes a motivation for the light in your scene. This doesn’t always need to happen but it helps create the verisimilitude of the scene. As Roger Deakins explains, unmotivated lighting personally takes him out of a movie. Practical lighting, in other words, helps create a cohesive and immersive experience.
The second benefit of practical lighting in film is literally practical. Without practical lights, the entire lighting setup would need to be adjusted for each shot in a scene. And if you’re up to speed on your cliche Hollywood lingo, “time is money.” Lighting with practicals helps reduce that extra time and allows the filmmakers to work within the space more fluidly and effectively.
Roger Deakins cinematography doesn’t just look good, it’s also often minimal and motivated. You can see this even in hyper-stylized worlds like Blade Runner 2049 and In Time. Consider building practical lighting directly into your next project and see for yourself just how it can help tell better stories.

Practical Lighting Part 2 is in the works!
I'm not a cinematographer, and have zero interest in being one. But in my VERY early career (early-mid 80's) I worked with Jim Crabe (DP Rocky, China Syndrome, Karate Kid)... and the simple "secrets" he told me have never been forgotten and apply to EVERY aspect of film making. Keep things simple, keep things consistent, and never lose the flavor of the story. He explained the last by saying "if you're cooking something and it needs more paprika, are you going to use chili power just because they look the same?" I'll bet Roger Deakins wouldn't.

In the era of B/W film, density on black & area of white created instant 3D on the screen. I am totally agree with Roger that flooding out the face with lights isn’t intriguing at all.

Tarrantino said about Deakins that he likes digital because he's too lazy to light. I wonder sometimes how much Tarratino really understands the technical side of what Deakins does, and is so convinced by his natural look that he doesn't realise the augmentation he does to achieve this look. I think Tarrantino's mastery is the story telling, script writing, but is too blinkered by film to appreciate that although digital makes some things easier, it's not everything.

Deakins is the master, but it's so funny how only people in film think this way. No "normal" person watching a film says "oh look, a second shadow on the nose, this must be lit with with an artificial light."

I think most people who've watched it do. It's really bizarre and awful but in a very charming way. So many movies we watch tend to all be...fine, with few being great and most being passable. But watching a trainwreck is far more interesting!
👌🏾👌🏾
I’m not sure if this is correct or not, but I believe Tim Robbins only agreed to do Shawshank redemption if Roger Deakins were the cinematographer.

Ep. 1 of the Deakins series should change your mind :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/fW2rmquYiaeYaag.html
Most people don't even notice those little things like the double shadow. Once one begins to notice those things, low quality lighting design can destroy the spatial immersion pulling the viewer back to reality, and ruins the experience. I like movies that suck me into them, causing me to forget the real world. A good movie is like a good book in that way. Suspension of disbelief becomes much easier with justified lighting.
Dislikers are those who are in huge debt due to studying in film school and all they were taught is conventional lighting!
