Roger Daltrey of The Who: Rock legend, cancer warrior

"You'll never make anything of your life, Daltrey": Those words by the school principal who expelled Roger Daltrey for misbehavior at age 15 resonated enough to fuel the young man to one of rock's most prestigious careers: Front man of The Who, star of "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia," "mod" fashion icon, and cancer warrior. He talks with Jim Axelrod about his new memoir, "Thanks a Lot, Mr. Kibblewhite," and about his 30-year mission of aiding hospital wards to deal with teenage cancer patients.

I adore Roger. I got to see him at his Ryman Auditorium concert in Nashville, his first time there, my first concert. He's 75, face looks 20 years younger at least, and body looks even younger than that!! The only thing that irks me is they don't go into detail about how Keith died. He was actually CLEAN of drugs and alcohol, had even spoken to Pete on the phone the day before about the old band getting back together. What happened was, he was on Heminevrin, the British version of Anahol, which keeps you from drinking. But his whole life, even with aspirin, he never took one or two pills, he took a handful. Without thinking, he took a handful of Heminevrin and overdosed. Tragic accident. He was only in his 30's. Zak Starkey, Ringo Starr's son, now plays drums for them. He was drummer at the concert I attended. He was taught by both Ringo and Keith, and does a fair job imitating Keith's drumming style. It's just amazing. One question I'd love to ask Roger, how did he come up with the trademark mic swinging? That's just fantastic and fun to watch!!

I saw an interview on the mic swinging. He said that the other fellas all had something that stood out, Pete's guitar smashing, of course Keith and John always dressed very flashy. So, he just came up with it on a whim. But I also heard him say that in the early days, guys in the crowd would throw things at them and being a bit of a bruiser when he was younger, he tried knocking them out with the mic. So it stuck. Probably a combination of both those things I think.

I would love to meet Roger and Pete, too. Roger has said that "Behind Blue Eyes" is his favorite Who song, and I 'd like to tell him how much that song meant to me, because I was the guy in that song when I was in school - treated like an outcast. When I heard and comprehended the lyrics to "Behind Blue Eyes" years ago (the 70s and 80s), I thought, wow, Daltrey and Townsend understand me! What I didn't understand about myself at the time was that I have ASD, which explains a lot of my interpersonal problems then.

I cannot believe how Daltrey’s voice never got weak, never wore out, and I have no idea why it didn’t, unless he had an incredible vocal mechanism naturally….after all of that screaming over Entwistle’s roaring bass, it boggles the mind! Robert Plant had such an amazing voice, too, but he didn’t know what he was doing and blew his vocal cords in the 70s, his voice never recovered, and the same thing actually happens to young opera singers, or those who try a heavier role than their voice can support. Having studied classical vocal production, I know this happens, and I’m just in AWE of Daltry’s voice!

I was born in '72 and become a lover of Classic Rock and a short time later, Glam Rock. The Who was my first love and every time I hear Baba O'reilly it is just like the first. As great as Led Zep, the Stones and Floyd were The Who is the best in my opinion. Its tough, but his time on earth is coming to a close, as are many classic rockers. Even my Jersey Boy Bruce is in the latter years. Its a damn shame that the industry has not seen as good of artists as those in the late 60s and 70s. The past 25 years for the music industry have been an absolute abortion.

He had been so tired since his teens but just thought of as a growing young kid. Leukemia took this young man before his 21st birthday. I have been diligent with my sons' physicals and just held my 17yr old son's hand once again for that blood draw. It's so easy to think something as horrible as Childhood Cancers can't happen in your family until it does.

The Beatles were lucky they never played a double-bill with The Who. Would've been completely blown off the stage.

Which era of each band? The Hamburg-era Beatles were leather-clad preludan-fueled punks with a wild stage show. The stadium-era Beatles were already losing interest in live performance and focusing more and more on pushing the boundaries of songwriting and using the studio to create more sophisticated recordings that couldn't be reproduced live.

Irony with a Capital I! Daltry has sung over untold thousands of times, the words, "Hope I die before I get old !" Too late now, Rog. But he's a fine bloke all the same.

He was raised in a tough section of London. You had to be tough to survive, so Roger did what most kids would do, took up boxing and learned how to drop a bully with a right hook. 👊
