Rodrik Cassel: Devoted Too Far | Character Analysis | ASOIAF

Castellans and masters-at-arms led some of the most overlooked and underappreciated tasks in all the Seven Kingdoms. They were responsible for leading great strongholds in the absence of their lords, they were responsible for training the resident soldiers, and they were instructed to teach the sons of those they served to become knights in their own right. Often, their work went unnoticed until something went wrong: a lordling lost a fight, an army lost a battle, a lord lost his castle. Yet, the most successful masters-at-arms became close confidants to their lords and earned the respect of entire kingdoms as a result. Such a man as this was Rodrik Cassel. Hello everyone, and welcome back to Exploring Fiction. A servant of the North for his entire life, Ser Rodrik was a mainstay at Winterfell, where he carried out his duties without question. He was so loyal, that Eddard, Catelyn, and Robb Stark all had no qualms about leaving him virtually in charge of their great home when they left on various campaigns. Rodrik acted nobly in their stead, but his servitude to the realm of the North led him through deceit and straight to his doom. He paraded across the lands, dispensing justice as his masters the Starks would have done, but in his efforts to live up to his lords’ expectations, he fell into the traps of those less honorable. So, who exactly is Rodrik Cassel, and why is he such an interesting character? Let’s explore…

The first video of your channel i've ever watched was about Jory and that won me instantly. Now you also did Ser Rodrik, dude you're awesome! Thanks for showing house Cassel some love, they are among the most loyal and kind characters in the entire series, but i always feel that they are criminaly underappreciated. So thanks for doing justice for both Jory and Rodrik, your content is awesome!

I've always wondered if Rodrik being a Knight was an error. As he seems more connected to Northern Culture than say; Jarah Mormont.

Is being a Knight a southern thing?

@OJ9992 yes! Knighthood is associated with the faith of the Seven, as the Manderly's are the only northern house that still practices Knighthood

The Internet is too funny, are you listening to ASOIF like the fourth time in a row I was thinking I would see if any anyone had made a video about Sir Rodrick, and here you are literally just two weeks ago from books written 30 years ago and a show made 10 years ago, too weird.
