Fun story about this game. My girlfriend's family (packer superfans) was returning from a trip out of state during this game and had no access to watch or listen. So I was texting play-by-play updates to my gf's brother for almost the entirety of the second half. When "4th and 8" happened, I called them and explained what happened. My gf's dad in a moment of elation told me I could marry his daughter as a result of everything that transpired. We've been married for 8 years.

It’s crazy, the bears had a top 3 offense this year and they were a playoff caliber team the year before. It’s crazy how quickly the bears fell into obscurity after this season. 4 straight years of mediocrity or bottom of the barrel. In a way Rodger’s dagger on 4th and 8 was the end of an era for the bears. 3 years later and the team had almost no players from this season, different coaches, different philosophy. That 2010-2013 bears team was fun

Not to defend Mike McCarthy, but I’m guessing it’s because if you miss the 2 and give up another TD you’re now down 9. You kick the extra point and if they score a TD you are still only down 8. Now, they definitely should have gone for 2, but I’m guessing that was the thought process
Since Favre became the full-time starter in 1992, the Bears are now 15-50 against the Packers. Put the history between these two teams aside for a moment. At this point, this is not a rivalry. It's pretty much an annual beatdown.
I was at this game, it was fucking amazing lol. We ran out of the stadium so fast i thought there was gonna be a riot
Shows you how much the game has evolved in just 10 years - it’s insane that they kicked an extra point instead of going for 2 after that touchdown to make it 26-28. Today, there’s not a coach in the league that would do that
@richardcypherrahl
5 ай бұрын
Nor should there be. In fact, I would contend that almost every coach at this point in history would have gone for two. McCarthy is just... special.
@tylerdarling6895

I thought the exact same thing. It’s pointless to be either down 1 or 2. Go for the tie - you lose nothing .
@platinummc01
5 ай бұрын
Unless you never expect to see the ball again with over 11 minutes left (unlikely) , you go for 1 point there. If you are unsuccessful in the 2 point try and the come down and get 7... it's game over at that point. Going for one makes it now way the Bears can make it a 2 score game on after their possession. But yes... had it been much later in the 4th that the Bears could possibly bleed the rest of the clock, you have to play like it's your last possession and go for 2.
@masterstumpy3583
5 ай бұрын
@@richardcypherrahlno, you always take your PAT. If the Bears force a turnover and return it for 2 pts, ruins any chance GB has to kick a FG to win it, if it were to come down to that. Not to mention... There's 11 min in the game at that time. There's no need to do that.
@richardcypherrahl
5 ай бұрын
@@platinummc01 eh, I don't subscribe to that idea. You're out there to beat or tie the other team within sixty minutes. Put the ball in your offense's hands and tie the score. There's very little potential upside to intentionally continuing to trail on the scoreboard once you've had an opportunity to tie.

This game was an absolute war.
Rodger was right, it’s not a rivalry anymore
Going for the extra point was 100% the right call, with 11:30 left in the game. If we failed to get that 2 point conversion, and the Bears go down and get 7 (putting us down 9 points), they will have made it a two possession game late in the 4th...game over. We made sure the Bears couldn't essentially end the game with a touchdown. Great call. Not everyone will understand that Coach was just thinking ahead.

Wrong call. You don't play expecting the other team to score another TD. you play to win the game. Go for the Tie now. Don't kick the can down the road. Down by a point is still losing. A FG at that point wins it either way even if you miss the 2 point conversion.

@christophersandquist1092 I feel like you're contradicting yourself when you say "play to win"... and you're wanting GB to tie the game. Mind you, it's almost 12 minutes left I'm the game. They weren't going to win the game on that possession. Too much time left to start taking risks. I would be with you if I never expected the Packers to see the ball again. You also have to take into account that the Packers were having a tough time getting stops.
@christophersandquist1092

I didn't watch the whole game only this quarter. So if that's the case that definitely would change it and make sense. Just would suck for GB if bears didn't score and stop the packers from even a field goal then win by 1 point.
