Rode Wireless Go II vs Sennheiser G4 112p & 512p (Real world audio samples) | Worth the price?

Took me a really long time and contemplation before I took the leap of faith and bought a $1,200 wireless lav system.
I made this comparison video so you can judge for yourself if the G4 512p lives up to it's reputation or are you better off with the popular Rode wireless Go?
I hope you guys enjoyed this video and found it useful. Don't forget to like and subscribe if you did. Cheers!

I have been a long time user of the Senheiser G4 system and love it! I have long wanted to get the Rode Wireless Go for travel because it is so compact, but listening to your comparisons, it is clear the Senheiser is is far superior. That said, there is no denying the portability of the Rode, and, the fact that it has on-board recording and can be used without a lav, all are fantastic options.

@@BernardLau1991 I love the mke-2 mic, but find the rather stiff cable (apparently shielded to reduce interference) can be a bit noisy. It's a shame, because apart from that it's a great mic. I've recently bought a Sanken cos-11d and find the cable noise a bit easier to manage with that mic - it also has slightly more treble than the mke-2.

You have just compared the different microphones that were included in the sets and the most expensive one, the MKE2, definitely won. To compare transmitters, you should use the same microphone for each one. Recordings on the same microphone (for example MKE2) RODE, 112 and 512 should sound the same. The most important thing you did not compare, and it seems crucial to me, is the range of the transmitters. RODE operates at 2.4Ghz and reports that it has a range of up to 200m! And Sennheisers operate on different frequency bands (depending on the country) from 470-940Mhz and their range is 100m. Additionally, you can choose the frequencies. The key question is how does it look in practice? Which of them has the better range in an empty space without obstacles (for example in a meadow), and which is better in the city between blocking cars, walking people, jamming the signal with power lines, or other strange things that might weaken or drown out the signal? Will any of them break the sound after 50m (or more or less) when the transmitter is obstructed (even by your body because the sennhaisers are mainly worn on the back with a belt)? Honestly, for such vlogging from home or from your hand where you are 1m-2m from the camera, all you need is a microphone plugged directly into the camera or camcorder. You don't need an expensive wireless system, just a good quality microphone.

I don't disagree with what you said. Like the part about comparing different lav on the same transmitters. However, I went with the route I chose because I wanted to look at it at the perspective of buying as a set. It is very unlikely someone would buy the rode wireless go and the mke 2 mic. That is why I made this review this way, As for the different scenarios, I did think of doing that but it requires a lot of time and effort. So I just wanted to focus on audio quality haha.

superb video. I think there is a difference between the 112 and the 512 tho. Like my first choice would be the 512, rode wireless go 2, then the 112. Like the 112 for it's price doesn't add THAT much value IMO. The quality of the MKE2 is also world's apart. You won't regret it.

Your test is done really well and I clearly heard the differences. Thank you very much for that. Professionally, I've only ever worked with Sennheiser, but I didn't have to buy them myself. RØDE is very well priced if you have to buy all your equipment yourself. However, I don't like the quality at all. It sounds like RØDE Wireless Go II is filtering out certain frequencies. It sounds like a phone transmission. What the RØDE VideoMic Pro doesn't have is normal. Is it the microphones or the recording? have you ever put a Sennheiser microphone in the rode transmitter and recorded it with rode and radio transmission? I would still be interested to know if it reaches the quality of the Sennheiser transmission. Because Rode's concept is great.

Yes they are quite overpriced in my opinion. Personally, I would recommend that you take a look at the sennheiser avx system with the mke2. Great audio quality but more modern than the g4. But that said, I do think the the rode wireless go 2 is way more versatile with all the magnet mounts and the handheld accessory and the on board recording and in built lav. I use it more even though I own a “better system” I use the g4 for more important projects. I know I didn’t exactly answer your question but I hope it helps :)

Yes you can. But weirdly, when I tried it; the sound quality seems worse than using rode’s lavaliere. I’m not 100% she’s on this but I think it might have something to do with rode not providing enough power to the lav or something.

  • @TranscendMediaProduction

The Rode wireless go II can only supply around 3v “plug in power” to a lav mic. The MKE 2 requires 7.5v. You would underpower the mic and lower the signal to noise ratio, which would overall sound bad. A better mic for the Rode Wireless Go II is the Tram TR50, which only requires 1.5v and has been an industry standard lav mic for 20+ years.

The MKE 2 suppresses the ambient noise and isolates the voice more. Depends on what you’re doing but for corporate interviews you want the MKE 2. I’ve had corporate shoots ruined by unwanted background noise. The MKE 2 is what I need for my workflow. I’ve also used the Rode Wireless Go II for a corporate conference and had intermittent interference and dropped signals across the room. When you are shooting paid professional work for thousands of dollars, it doesn’t make sense to try to save $600.00 by going with the Rodes. I made the mistake of using them during a live corporate event and gotten burned in real time. Fortunately I had a sound engineer on set and he switched out the Rodes for Senheisser wireless mics.
