I need to use my NTG more, I haven't fully played with it to discover what it can do, this video was really helpful!!! I do find it great as the mic I use when I'm remote teaching in front of my whiteboard, on a boom arm it makes great audio!

I use the NTG anytime I don’t want a mic in screen, which is for most of my videos. Otherwise I use the RCP for everything. 😎

Yes, I think you're right about the sound. the NTG appears to have slightly more presence (maybe a bit of a bump in the mid-highs) which I think I prefer. It certainly is an amazingly versatile mic.

They really are. I'm currently testing the NTH alongside the Sennheiser MKH50, which is like a $1200 mic and the sound quality difference is super minimal. The Sennheiser has a few other strengths, but I'm so impressed by the Rode!

These little tripods are the Manfrotto Pixi and they're absolutely awesome! Usually pretty inexpensive too. As for a phone, usually you'll just need a TRRS adapter (which will look like a 3.5mm input to whatever your phone's connection is- USB, Lightning, etc). If you Google "yourphone TRRS Adapter" You should be able to find the right one.

Is the NTG plugged directly into the camera for this video or is it run through a mixer? What were the settings? Sorry if you already answered this...

It’s directly into the camera 👍 I try and keep the camera’s gain as low as possible with the NTG usually set to around 9 or 10.

Great comparizon Tom. I bought the NTG although I have a bunch of mics, but none of them "that" directional - as well as being a USB microphone as well. OK, my Oktava MK-012 is pretty much very directional but it didn't work so well as an overhead mic. More than half a foot or a foot away, I got some noise from the preamp, although we're talking Arturia Audio Fuse Studio interface here. So I thought of getting the NTG because it _is_ an overhead mic, it's got USB, can be used on camera directly.... But it surprised me. The negative is that it also deploys noise when used with the Røde XLR converter jack and into the Arturia Audio Fuse Studio. As a USB mic it depends on the input level I choose (in the computer) but it's defo quieter then with the Arturia. On the (very) positive side the little Video Mic NTG is _great_ when close miked. I tried it for some voiceovers, just plain in front of me and a bit to the side to avoid the pops, and it was dead quiet and very warm, almost as my high end large membrane studio mics, very warm mids and I dared to pass the hight pass filter (cough cough...) to get those lows as well. All in all, I'm not sending it back, of course, but I'm extra happy I found more uses for it then intended (or advertized). Now, I _really really_ had to tighten up the screws on the PSA1 boom arm because the NTG is so light, but I managed in the end.

Interesting- I didn't have to tighten anything on my PSA 1 to use it with the NTG. I wonder if they ship with different tensions? Who knows. Regardless, you never need to justify additional mic purchases to me! 😁

@@tombuck Bought my PSA1 from Amazon in Sweden and it just jump-popped up when I cut the paper wrap holding the arms... Then it wouldn't hold my Aston Origin in place either and that mic is much heavier than the NTG. So I looked it up on the YT and found a video by piano player Rodney Ronquillo explaining how to tame it. He only tightened the last screw right next to the mic holder and that was it. I had to fix all three.

First of all, I have been following you for a long time, you are doing great. What would you recommend for KZread video shooting and interior shots that keeps the sound clear and full and keeps as much noise as possible? I bought MKE600, but there is a lot of noise, I am not satisfied at all.

That's a tricky question. I really do like the Videomic NTG a lot, but it's not a noise-cancelling mic. Chances are you can get the results you're looking for with a bit of EQ during editing (specifically compression, bass adjustments, and Voice Isolation/Noise gate). Thanks for sticking around for so long!

This is a great overview. I bought my Videomic-NTG back in February, and I absolutely love it. It seems that one of the most important differences between the Pro Plus and the NTG, asides from the latter being a bit more portable, is that the portability is flanked by the type of audio connector it takes, which is unbalanced (clever that its cable can work on both a DSLR with 1/8” jack) and smartphones. The Pro Plus has a balanced connection, an XLR, and I don’t have a camera with such a connection. I used the NTG on my iPad Pro, and also my computer, and works great on both. The versatility of the mic is pretty astounding, to the point that my poor Heil PR-40 mic is lonely! Again, great overview an d thanks much!

Love your channel. Moved into new studio - lots of echo. I have pro plus - use a boom arm but lots of echo still. Does it look bad to put it on a stand in front of me like you did? Could not tell if that was for test or actual practical use.

In this case I did for the video so people could actually see the mic, but there’s nothing wrong with keeping it that way. I’ve seen lots of people do it! I don’t think it looks bad at all, but either way, sacrificing a bit of aesthetics for improved audio is worth it.

I love the VideoMic NTG a lot, I have 2! is it possible to pair it with the RØDECaster Pro? I don’t have a XLR mic at the moment and I’d prefer to use them with it. Maybe a couple of Rode VXLR+ could help but using them directly would be just 👌

Yes! You can connect them to the 3.5mm smartphone channel, or use a 3.5 to XLR adapter. I've done it in the past and it's worked just fine 👍

Great review! Just to double check if I get this right: a 32bit float recorder would render the clipping and the safety track features obsolete. Or do I miss something? A little of a bummer that the NTG doesn't have a removable battery. But after watching this, I'll probably go for it nevertheless. Cheers!

@@tombuck I record into the Ninja V, so I’m limited with options. Would’ve gone with a Deity but they’re all incompatible. I also love that Wireless trick, so I’m hoping that works with DJI’s wireless mics as that would be super useful for interviews/talking heads!

Thanks for video, helped me to decide to get the NTG. I do however wish that it ran on AA batteries, I like to be able to hot swap batteries with my gear but 30 hours should be manageable for me. Gear running on 9v batteries sounds like hell to me, glad I skipped getting the old videomic pro, have been getting by with just the Rode Wireless Go for a long time.

Luckily the battery in the NTG lasts a super long time, but yeah, it can definitely be inconvenient in those times when you wish you could just swap it out real quick. The Pro Plus has a nice replaceable rechargeable battery (and can run off of AA's too), but I like the design and sound of the NTG more.

The NTG sounds amazing! This might be the mic for me to upgrade in a few years in case I max out the Micro 🙃 Awesome review as always Tom! 👍

The Videomic NTG is different from the other NTG's, which are XLR mics.

Thank you for this great video. I do have a question. I own a video mic ntg for about a year now. I connect the mic directly into the camera and stil I struggle to get the best out of that mic. What can I do to have my audio sound crisp as your or close to it. Also can you please recommend a denoise app. I mostly do talking heads. Just like you. Just so you have an idea what do I use it for 1K thx

The best thing to do in that case is to turn your camera’s gain as low as possible. In the case of Canon, that’s typically 2-3 clicks from the lowest setting. The. Adjust the gain in the mic until you’re getting a good level. Camera preamps are usually not the best and can start to introduce noise/hiss if turned up too loud.

Those adapters should get the job done. I do prefer to stick with official Rode-branded adapters for things like this because they seem to work the best without causing interference.

There's no difference in sound or interference as long as there's a clear line of sight between the transmitter and the receiver. I did a range test in my Wireless Go review video 👍

Nice. Back when I did more mic reviews on my channel (vs teacher content now) I compared the VideoMic Pro to the NTG2. Kind of completely different use cases though as you need an interface for the NTG2. I end up using the VideoMic Pro when I'm on the go and then I use the NTG2 via my interface when doing stuff at home; output of the interface into the mic input of my DLSR to avoid having to sync later.

The numbers on the dial is a game changer. Every dial should have numbers. And the TAKSTAR SGC-598 (Usually $30) would be a good budget offering to show off value propositions. I would like to see your take on it. Love mine. There's also a newer version 600.

If I may add 1 key functionality of the NTG, automatic sensing of what device it's plugged in to. Camera or recorder (no plug in power, trs) or smartphone (if it still has it- trrs, provides 3-5 volts plug in power). No switching cables needed! Also charges while in use as usb c mic. Congrats on full time 'Tube'n!

Great video! I'm using the VideoMic NTG for a few months now for my marketing tutorials, and I really really like it! As I'm most often doing screen-sharing kind of tutorials, I have this microphone permanently plugged into my computer & mounted above my desk. Definitely works great as a usb microphone 😄 The only thing I noticed is that the gain control dial on the back of the microphone doesn't seem to be working when you're using it as a usb microphone.

​@c m c a l p i n e I mounted the VideoMic NTG on top of a 80cm tall suptek monitor arm. That way, it reaches just over my monitor. I've also used a RODE PSA1 arm, but that didn't work so well because this microphone is so lightweight. It kept shooting back up.

Hey @Tom Buck what do you think of the videomic NTG vs the Samson Q9U. They both seem to cover many of the same bases, USB mics for direct connection to my Mac, also both will go well into something like a Zoom H6 I presume, via XLR and the 3.5mm .... For a new video podcast starting up, sometimes studio based, sometimes internal location. Thanks. Love your vids, new subscriber.

Hey Tom (great name)! They both deliver great sound quality, and of course the Q9u offers direct XLR compatibility, which is pretty awesome. The Videomic is definitely a bit more versatile in terms of how it can be used and I think it produces a more "neutral" sound, whereas the Samson out of the box has a more "broadcast/radio" sound (if that makes sense).

Curious if the mic can be ran off USB-C power, like if the battery is dead/low a power bank feeds the USB-C port while the signal goes over the 3.5mm cable. Or, if the mic can feed audio to both the PC via USB-C connection and to another device via the 3.5mm jack... Just in case you want to have redundant recordings

Are the mics strong enough to do a recording from lets say on 120 inches (3 meters) distance? I want to do a recording of a NY msg with my Canon R6, but about 5 to 6 collegues come in the same image...so we need to keep distance from the camera

For short clips of audio, they can work at 3 meters, but I'd recommend running a long cable to position the mic closer.

I find the NTG better indoors, but outdoors, the Videomic Pro+ has amazing wind rejection with the deadcat designed for it. In fact, it’s one of the best I’ve heard in windy conditions.

The Videomic pro+ and ntg have their own fitted deadcat, so no foam. If I don’t use the fitted deadcat, then I keep the foam on or else the deadcat woulf fall off, but both of these have their own properly fitted ones.

Yes. If the wind is low, foam is ok but for higher winds, a foamie isn’t enough. The NTG needs a foamie and a deadcat but the videomic pro+ has its own deadcat that fits. The videomic pro+ is much better in wind. If you only have the fiamie for the videomic pro+, then a deadcat is needed. The deadcat fits over the foamie.

I never found a good way to connect the Videodisc to either RCP. But I'm really hoping that Rode will start to enable USB mics on the RCP2, which would then make it easier to use the NTG (kind of like how they've done it with the Connect app already).

@@tombuck Hey Tom, thanks for the reply. After a few days of fidgeting, I found out that one of the monkeys in the house have enabled the robot effect voicemod 😅. I think I can confirm that the Videomic NTG works with RCP2 through a cable connection (in my case stock cable with VC1) with a VXLR+ adapter.

Awesome video as always. I bought the Pro Plus last week for my ZV1 and I've had nothing but issues with it so far. Auto turn on is hit or miss and battery wont stay charged. I'm returning it tomorrow and I think I might end up just getting the NTG now. Love your channel, always have.

@@tombuck : i highly recommend it... if you love the Rode Videomic NTG, you'll see what I mean by a 'copy'. The thing I love about the deity is that it comes will a XLR adaptor and the mic block the 48V if ever you forgot to disabled it. :) Cheer!

I hated my Pro Plus the day I got it, since the built-in charging mechanism was dead on arrival (i have a YT video showing how i fixed it), but regardless, i really never cared for it since mine seemed to have such a high noise floor. That Videomic NTG will probably land on my desk soon thanks to your review and also I actually prefer the sound of the NTG vs the ProPlus.

The NTG is amazing. Today I've been working on another video about it and it's really great. I compared it to the $1200 Sennheiser MKH 50, and while the Sennheiser was definitely better, it's not $1000 better. It's amazing how well the NTG holds up. Plus the USB functionality is really helpful too.

Of the NTG comparison videos I've watched so far, this was by far my favourite. Great video man! Almost as good as your puns ;) I think you've sold me on the NTG - tons of great benefits that I wasn't aware of. By the way, loved how you got around the creative limitation of needing the NTG to film your a-roll but still showcasing the functionality by adding in b-roll for each feature!

Hello, I use the NTG as a USB mic into my PC. The issue I am having is that the gain knob has virtually no affect on the sound. Am I missing something? Does the gain knob not work using USB?

You're not doing anything wrong, the giant knob doesn't work in USB mode- you'll need to adjust the volume in whichever application you're using. I wish the gain knob worked that way, but as far as I know it doesn't.

Was there a very subtle Spinal Tap reference hidden in the microphone dial sequence?

Thanks for posting this, Tom! I got the Videomic NTG a few weeks ago, and I love it. (In fact, I bought it based on your earlier video where you mentioned using a shotgun mic for off-camera recording during zoom, streaming, etc.) I've been using it excluively as a USB mic coming into my office Zoom/presentation setup, though it's nice to know it can work as a camera mic too. Here are my thoughts after a couple of weeks: PROS: - Build quality is great. - Sound quality is great (with notes below). - The dual analog/USB option is a massive game changer. - When connected in USB mode, the mic is powered by the USB connection so it can stay connected indefinitely - you don't need to worry about battery life. - Because it's a USB mic, RODE can offer firmware updates that improve performance. (This was important for me - see below.) CONS: - The variable gain dial doesn't do anything when the mic is connected in USB mode. - I was a little disappointed in the pickup pattern. I've never owned a shotgun mic, but I assumed there would be more dramatic rejection of noise from the side and back. When I first got the mic, I hardly heard any side/back rejection at all. Then I applied the latest firmware update, and side rejection seems to have improved, so I'm a mite happier. - While the mic does a decent job of picking up my voice from about 2 feet away, it's still nothing like a good close-up voiceover mic. I was previously using a Yeti on a boom arm, which got the mic closer to my face without entering the frame -- but hovered in front of my screen and blocked my view of the monitor. The NTG is further back, out of both the camera's and my own sightlines, but the tradeoff is more outside noise and less low end. If I bring it closer to my mouth it sounds better (still not as rich as the Yeti, but close), but of course that defeats the purpose of a shotgun mic. So - bottom line - I wish it were "shotgunnier." OTHER: - In my tests, the different pads and filters don't really seem to make much difference. I couldn't hear much change between, say, the normal and high boost settings. Very subtle. Overall: loving the Videomic NTG, despite a few grumbles about pickup pattern and noise rejection. Still learning how to tune it for best results, but very happy so far.

curious what settings when having a rode wireless go + rode videomic ntg connected to an iphone or camera. Also, what's the sound quality with the said combo.

I'm not sure how to connect both at the same time, but speaking generally, you want to rely more on the mic's gain than the phone or camera. That means keeping the phone's recording level as low as possible and then boosting the gain on the mic to get the cleanest signal.

@Tom Buck They are very nice I am a motion graphics designer and I shoot corporate live streams . Soon I’m about to start a podcast that’s how I came in contact with your channel getting tons of ideas.

So a friend of mine is thinking about using this mic as his permanently attached PC mic. What i'm wondering is if that won't mess up the internal battery in the long run since you can't remove it. I had an old phone plugged into my PC for years (I used it as an alarm clock) and recently the battery started expending. Won't that happen to the mic as well after a (long) while?

I don't think it'll cause any problems since the battery is essentially bypassed while in USB mode. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to run it down every once in a while, but I haven't heard of battery issues with the NTG yet.

Hi Tom, great video thanks. One element i wasn't so clear on in your film is which mic has the better sound rejection from the sides. It appeared that the VideoMic did but this is the opposite of what i expected if so. And also if there's a difference in the optimum distance that both mics pick up. Again i would have assumed the NTG would be better at picking up sounds at distance given its an NTG but if it is the case that the VideoMic has better side sound rejection then perhaps that not the case either. Thanks

They both have very similar pickup patterns. They do reject quite a bit of noise from the sides (but not everything) and they also pick up a little bit from the rear.

It's a long 3.5mm that I think is actually made by Rode. I've had issues too with cheap 3.5mm cables causing interference, so it's worth investing in a good one.

Thanks for the kind words Dave! I have the mic mounted to a Pearstone Articulating arm on the end of a Rode PSA 1 with a long 3.5mm cable running to the camera. It works really well and gets out of the way when I'm not using it.

There are a lot of NTGs, but there's still only one Videomic NTG (which is this one). The other NTG models are XLR shotgun microphones. They've been around for a long time with great reputations, so Rode tried to bring that quality to an on-camera mic here 👍

Really love your videos! Always inspires me to keep improving. But that’s where the headache comes in too. I tried the Wireless Go method but I keep getting some distortion. Not sure if it’s the right term for that. Basically i don’t see my audio levels go above -3dB while recording but I still get some irritating distortion or loud sound for some words when I play back in FCPX. I use a Sony A7C at audio level 2, the wireless go setting at medium and the videoMic NTG at a gain of 9 or 10. Why does the sound still get “hot” or distorted sometimes? I thought it was the position of the NTG mic (which aimed directly at my mouth) that could have caused it cos you mentioned in your Neewer video that you should just aim the mic slightly off centre instead to get rid of the plosives. But when I saw you using the NTG in your video above, it was directly pointed at your mouth and sounded great. Possible to also share what were your audio settings? Thanks a million man! I think the term you're looking for is "clipping." You might even need to turn your audio lower than it already is. When using the NTG with my Sony a7SIII, I keep the camera's audio at 8 and the NTG at 8 or 9. This usually sounds good, but it takes a lot of experimenting (I used the EOS R in this video, but I think my Sony's audio is similar to your A7C). Beyond that, you might want to play around with adding a limiter when editing your audio. If it's not severely clipped, this can help keep things at the level you want them.

@@tombuck Thanks for replying Tom! I did try a limiter in post but didn't seem to help with clipping. The thing is that it didn't seemed to be clipping when I was monitoring the live audio levels. Anyway will keep experimenting! My next phase is podcasting. Bought the Maono PM422 after watching your video. Hope that you are able to get your hands on a Maonocaster and do a review on that. Its closer to my "ideal" budget! ;)
