AKG C214 wins by a landslide. Not that the NT1 is bad, it's just the the AKG is soooo good - warm, inviting, smooth. The NT1 sounds flat in comparison and I don't think I could deal with that handling noise. Fun comparison!

Thanks for this review. Were you recording this in a treated room? I would be using the mic in an untreated room, so background noise rejection is a serious issue. Which one is better in that respect?

I think the C214 is better at noise rejection in general. One key thing with any mic is getting the source of audio as close as comfortably possible--this allows you to keep the input gain relatively low which will help with picking up ambient noise

I didn’t do anything. Just recorded straight into the Rodecaster, no presets. Gain level set to 18. I didn’t do anything in post just raised the volume to an appropriate level

I really appreciate your presenting style! I have done some professional recording in studios for regional radio stations, but am completely out of my depth on the tech side of things. I intend to set up a basic home studio in an effort to get more voice work, and was all set to buy the nt1 until I watched/heard this review. I far prefer the rich, warm tones of the AKG and agree with another comment already made, that the nt1 sounds flat by comparison. You then further confused me by seeming to recommend the neutrality and versatility of the nt1? Are you implying that you will have greater manipulation, post recording, with the nt1 as opposed to a more finite sound with the AKG? Thanks again for a very engaging presentation! My choice may come down to budget constraints in the end anyway…

Either one
