Roddy McDowall talks about Elizabeth Taylor, Robert Wagner, Cary Grant and many others.
Ойын-сауық
Roddy was best known for portraying Cornelius and Caesar in the original Planet of the Apes film series, as well as Galen in the spin-off television series. Also, portraying Augustus in the historical drama Cleopatra (1963), he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture. Other titles include The Longest Day (1962), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), Inside Daisy Clover (1968), That Darn Cat! (1968), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), Funny Lady (1975), The Black Hole (1979), Class of 1984 (1982), Fright Night (1985), Overboard (1987), Fright Night Part 2 (1988) and A Bug's Life (1998). He also served in various positions on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
His family moved from England to the United States in 1940 after the outbreak of World War II. McDowall became a naturalized United States citizen on 9 December 1949, and lived in the United States for the rest of his life. He made his first well-known film appearance at the age of 12, playing Huw Morgan in How Green Was My Valley (1941), where he met and became lifelong friends with Maureen O'Hara. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and made him a household name.
He starred in Lassie Come Home (1943), a film that introduced an actress who would become another lifelong friend, Elizabeth Taylor. That same year, he appeared as Ken McLaughlin in My Friend Flicka, and went on to appear in such films as The Keys of the Kingdom (1944) and The White Cliffs of Dover (1944). In 1944, exhibitors voted him the number one "star of tomorrow".

The interviewer is good. He asked intelligent questions and he was interested in Roddys answers. Roddy is a pro. He never talks negative about anyone. Fun to watch.
Just an excellent human being. The world needs, and has always needed, more people like him.
In 1974 I had the opportunity to visit the Planet of the Apes TV show set. I was 12 and we were watching a scene with Roddy McDowell in full ape make-up and costume. Maybe it was his humanity that I was so taken by, but I was a huge fan of Roddy's and his ape characters. He could tell, because when there was a break, he walked across the soundstage right up to me to scrunch his brow and say "Hello". I don't even know if I said anything. It was all I could do to keep from falling over. Thinking about this huge event from my childhood, I can't help but think what a generous and caring act this was. And that is pretty much all you hear about Roddy's legacy. He was generous and caring.

He photographed and took home 16mm film of all the biggest stars, and not so big stars, in particular, 1965, at his small beach house in Malibu. They all trusted him. He never betrayed any of them. The kind of friend anyone would want.

Roddy was such a kind and warm person. He was very loyal and popular amongst the Hollywood stars of the golden age. His home movies can be seen on KZread. They are a fascinating inside look at the golden age of Hollywood. I've never read a bad word said about Roddy...he was very well liked and respected by his peers.
Always really liked Roddy. He seemed such a kind man, and he was a great actor.
What a gentleman. I always thought he was a wonderful and very gifted actor.
A real rarity in Hollywood in that I don’t think I have ever heard a single person ever say a bad thing about him
When I saw the movie "How Green Was My Valley" I was really moved by Roddy's endearing performance. He was a winner from the beginning.
This was wonderful! Loved him when I first saw him in My Friend Flicka! Loved Cary Grant! Love seeing Roddy’s home movies as well!
All i hear is Jervis tetch / the mad hatter when I hear Roddy speak. I love his voice🥰🥰🥰

Just saw Roddy's movie, How Green Was My Valley - And I fell in love with his acting. He looked so innocent, cute faced boy, perfect the role he played !!! Hats off to the director, he selected a perfect boy then. . According to me, he acted in this movie mainly using his eyes. Almost every scene, he did talking with his eyes. Wish I had met this wonderful, kind man. RIP
Roddy McDowall had such passion for all the people I he loved. xxx

I know how you feel; I've been watching him since I was 2 years old, been in love with him since I was 8. He died when I was 10, but my love never did. Only grew as I did. He was a gem of man. We were truly blessed that he lived among us on earth for his far too short 70 years. He left behind a legacy that is the biggest blessing to all of mankind. His spirit was so loving. It's a shame, there aren't more people like him.

OMG, close your eyes and you will hear Cornelius!
Of all of the stars that have passed away during my lifetime, there are few that I miss more than Roddy, who was always one of my favorites.
His dry kind humor comes through, he once said of his role in the Poseidon Adventure “ I gotta be in a great success of a film and thankfully I was one of the fist to perish so I didn’t have to stand in cold wet clothing for two more months. “
He was such a wonderful great Star.
So sweet, gently and unassuming.
What a beautiful interview. I adore Roddy even more.
He was great in the "Planet of the Apes", acting behind a mask. His personality shown through.
He has tons of home movies with the big actors of his day. I wish I had been an adult in the mid 60's simpler and much better days. America sucks today I hate to admit but true.

He was a little before my time, but nevertheless he is the reason I love drama and film today. I would later discover that he had a similar passion for film and film preservation as me. It is often said that he was a rarity in Hollywood in the sense that he made no enemies during his lifetime. A very rare feat in this game, but so evident here. Thank you for the memories, Roddy.
I agree with the interviewer, a terrific individual Roddy was God Bless Him

I met him in person when he was in Minneapolis many years ago doing Dial M for Murder. He was the consummate gentleman. It was a thrill.
The VERY BEST SERIES OF INTERVIEWS....
Roddy McDowall is one of the best actors ever. He never got the respect he deserved! He seemed to always be cast as a supporting actor, and never the lead. Thanks to him we still have many movies that would have been destroyed. I loved Roddy! Still do! He was a class act, even as a child.
Night gallery was my favorite performance of his!
Rod was a dear friend and I miss him terribly
I’m just now hearing of this man, very likable. He also made a couple of really cool home videos, one of the, documents working on planet of the apes. Roddy was also very good in Fright Nights. Unfortunately, not many talk about that film, idk why, it’s a great vampire flick.

Roddy was shockingly Gay.
He was great as a Batman villain "The Book Worm."
The film they speak of, "Dead of Winter" had a release date of 6 February 1987 in the USA. Cary Grant died on November 29th 1986. I would guess that this interview happened somewhere around there.
God how I miss him first saw him in the movie Lord love a duck something about him just describe me interests I also love Ruth Gordon in that movie I'd like to see the outtakes of some of it last thing he did Was A Bug's Life he's got one of those voices that you can pick out automatically when you hear him he was friends with young and old and the acting business and nobody could ever say a bad thing here
I love this guy
And.... Bookworm in Batman...😊 But really a wonderful actor. One of my favorites. I think my favorite Roddy film is 'Lord Love a Duck'. Then probably the original 'Planet of the Apes'.
I think the interviewer was an inspiration for Martin Short's Jiminy Glick.
He was great in "Fright Night"
What a lovely chap, as we say over here in Blighty! Not a muck-raker, just a decent person.

When he said that about Cary Grant “part of our life is gone with him.” I think we can say the same about Roddy McDowall. 🥺❤️
Many kid stars don't make it past their older age. But MR. MCDOWALL did until he died. A great Actor. Did he win a life achievement award?
