Rod McKuen - San Francisco and Me

Музыка

'San Francisco and Me' - Track 2 of 15 from 'Stanyan Street & Other Sorrows' (Included on The Essential Rod McKuen with the Stanyan Strings LP, 1975).
I recorded this audio from the original vinyl. As far as I know, there is no mp3 version of it, as is the case with most of Rod McKuen's music.

I was 22 y./o in the Fall of '68, when 1st exposed to the music & words of Rod McKuen. I didn't like him, at all. There was something almost too personal-------too much feeling------in his words & music, & I wasn't ready for it. That year, I purchased " The Sea" , but never listened to it. it took many years of life , many gut punches, failure, & sorrows, to get me to finally, listen again, to Rod McKuen. Now, I understand him-------now, he speaks to me. ---------At 76 y/o, finally, I get him. -------------------MJL

I miss The City By The Bay; hell , if I could afford to live there I would in a second. Love SF, & Rod McKuen, now that I'm old, too. -------------------MJL, 76 y/o

For STEVE : I met "San Francisco" (Steve) years ago. I only recently found out he passed away. We met at a Pride Parade weekend in WEHO back in 1976. A weekend shared together and I was engulfed by his warmth, sensitivity and sweetness. I loved his beard against my cheek as we began to know each other. It seemed like we spent the whole weekend in each other's arms. We wrote for months. He was the logical one that knew a long distance relationship would be tough to grow. I conceded. Knowing that he did find love for many years with someone else made me happy for him. Knowing that they were both taken 7 weeks apart by a disease called Aids broke my heart. "San Francisco" and other sorrows.

His words continue to convey true sentiments most of us are unable to express

I have come as far away as means and mind will take me trying to forget you. I have traveled, toured, turned a hundred times in the road hoping to see you rushing after me. At night, though half a world away, I still hear you sigh in several sizes. The breathing softer when you're satisfied. The plip-plop body machinery back to normal. Remembering how warm you are and how defenseless in your sleep never fails to make me cry. I cannot bear the thought of you in someone else's arms yet imagining you alone is sad. And in the day my mind still rides the bridge from Sausalito home. I do not think me and San Francisco will be friends again we share too many troubles. Stanyan Street and Other Sorrows. Can anyone post the missing verse?!

I so love his poetry and his voice. When I was young I had an album with a song called "To an Isle in the Water wither her I would go." I long to hear it again. I hope someone has a copy and will post it.

From what I understand, the song called 'An Isle in the Water' was from Rod's 1972 album, 'The beautiful Strangers.' Unfortunately I don't have that album. Maybe you can track down the LP at a record store.

I believe Glenn Yarborough did it on "The Beautiful Strangers" which was renamed "I Thinf of You".
