lol. I remember inquiring about the use of walky talkies on the river in a facebook kayaking group. and I got totally pooped on. lots of haters of the walky talkies. I'm now banned from said group due to my controversial ways? haha

5 watts is an advertisement. The FCC info page for this radio shows its wattage output for channels 1-7 & 15-22 is 4.87 watts. Next time I have an extra $200 I might get one.

GMRS are license operated frequencies. While you are not likely to get in trouble transmitting without one, the possibility exists. There is no test and it's a $35 family license that lasts 10 years.

Yes very true and from what I learned it’s bigger issue when you’re using someone’s repeaters station. But I suggest just go ahead get the 10 year license I spent way more on less. And on that There is another option from Rocky Talkie that’s a license free version called the Mountain Talkie I personally have never heard of any enforcement of this license in the USA BUT reading over everything it’s very easy to get and actually check this link that Rocky Did to make it even easier. I did note that these are GMRS radios in the video and thumbnail. rockytalkie.com/blogs/rocky-talkie-blog/how-to-get-a-gmrs-license

Took my Rocky Talkie on the lake. My friend dropped it in the water maybe 6in down. The botton came out of it and ruined the walkie. For 160, I am annoyed to say the least

I'm curious Where are you located, I figured you were in Canada? If you are legit and want to work something out on getting a pair. You could probably contact them, and they would figure it out for you?

@@WadeHarrison hi again. I checked, these are not for UK use; Please note that the use of American FRS and GMRS walkie-talkies in the United Kingdom is not legal, and could cause interference to licenced radio users. These radios are often bought by British holidaymakers in the US or Canada or the Caribbean, or on cruise ships, and then brought back and used in the UK, with the buyers not knowing that they are breaking the law.

Would be really good to know how they stand up to rolling and swims. I'm looking for a set but want to be sure they're really waterproof enough for kayaking (unlike say the deWalt ones that don't hold up)

@@WadeHarrison I finally got around to checking their website: The radio isn't waterproof: Waterproofing IP56 (Splashproof/Snowproof, not submergible), only the mic is: Snow and Waterproof (IP67 submersible up to 1 meter). So that's too bad. Update: turns out I got confused because the radio used in this video isn't legal in Canada so doesn't show up on the Canadian Rockytalky site that it automatically goes to. So I was looking at the specs for a different radio.

@@AndrewMoizer Hi Andrew, thanks for checking. I had the same question. I looked at the Website you mentioned. The 5 watt GRMS radio used in the video is IP67, (the FRS radio, not in the video, is IP56).

@@JohnPaulPenna Thanks for the clarification. The 5W GMRS radio doesn't show up on the Canadian site because they're not legal in Canada (I just learned). It is IPX67 as you say. In theory IPX67 should be OK for a roll. The Dewalt radios I've used are IPX67, and I've had a bit of trouble with water. Opening them up and letting them dry for a week or so seemed to remove the water that was showing through the screen though. I was hoping I could find an IPX68 rated radio but haven't been successful so far. IPX67 seems to be the best I've found.
