marcus watkins I only beat him one time myself. Took me forever and it went a lot of rounds I don’t remember if I even knocked him out. I may have won by decision. I figured out away to avoid his punches and land a few punches in between. I remember being so nervous because I barely beat him and had got knocked down a few times as well. I was so disappointed to finally beat him and all they have at the ending was Adrienne and Rocky hugging in front their mansion. I was a sucker for video games based on movies though lol

And Clubber Lang whipped me a lot at first until I learned to beat him you had to punch him in the body. A shame how easy it was to beat Apollo though lol

They made overqualifying with the speedbag impossible without cheating and using a special controller. I knocked Drago out in the 11th without cheating. I jabbed while out of range and Drago would sometimes run into the big punch. You do it long enough you wear him down and eventually he goes down.

I always used the Sega Genesis turbo controller..it fit the master system portal..it was easy as hell to beat Drago after that! Lol knocked him out in the second round!!

I remember it being exactly as he described when I was a kid.

Look at what you've done! You've created an alternate history! You beat Drago so quickly and with so little damage done to yourself that the Soviet spectators never got a chance to root for Rocky. Rocky never made his "everybody can change" speech. Public sentiment in the Soviet Union never changes. The Berlin Wall never comes down. The War on Terror never begins because the Cold War continues into the 21st Century... Think about it man. Just think about it.

Naw, in my mind the cold war goes hot and they build Rocky Robots that fight Drago Robots with nuclear processors that fight, one day they inspire both USA and Russia and the cold war ends ending all wars forever... SO ROCKY CAUSED THE NEW WAR! JUST THINK ABOUT THAT!

Man I remember this game back in the day. Without a turbo controller, your arm is fucked from the punching bag then by the time you qualify, your arm is numb having to do the actual fight. Hated this game.

It is crazy how back then this game with only 3 different fights would have sold for $40-$50. This takes the "we have a short game so we have to make it super hard to make it last longer" to the extreme!

@@nookie077 I remember some Super Nintendo games being $70 (according to google 55GBP) With inflation that is $146!(115GBP) It is insane that games are soooo much more advanced now and much cheaper. I think we were getting ripped off big time back then! There was also a lot more crap back then. If you look at the Super Nintendo library sure there are some great games but the large majority of it is trash.

Total destruction of Drago, never saw it this way.

Absolutely lover The Sega Master System when I was a kid...Hang On.. Out Run.. Rocky..World Soccer ..Great Basketball Super Tennis and California Games were the ones I played such great memories x

Getting a high score in the speed bag training would determine if you could breeze through the Drago fight. It took me ages to figure out how to beat him. I never had a turbo controller but discovered that, during the speedbag training if I flipped my thumb around and used my thumb nail to slide back and forth between the two game pad buttons as fast as I could, I could make my own “turbo fire”! My arm would be burning by the end of the training, but I could typically get the 6 second average necessary to win...

This is very sentimental to me..thank you

Legendary game. I remember my brother beating this without the scandalous aid of turbo. It did take him years, however. And by the end, I witnessed him obtained the mythical seven hits per second on the speed-bag (he had a skimming technique). Man, that training section actually trains your forearms. I'll never forget it.

Even in 2022 the graphic of this game still is fairly good (for a game from 1987, respect!).

Man, you are a MASTER!! The notes are EXTREMELY helpful!! Reading them while watching the game, it feels like you're Mickey shouting out advice from the side of the ring.

Considering that the Master System is technologically more powerful than the NES, this graphics is very good for 8-bit.

I love how the count actually hits 10 in the Apollo Creed fight, but he's still allowed to get up.

I’m trying to get Sylvester Stallone to autograph my Rocky Sega Master System game before he kicks the bucket

This game has some of the best music and graphics of all time for master system.

I'm 35 and used to have this game when i was a kid. It took me years to finish it without a turbo controller. Actually, the first training gives you more powerful punches, the second one faster punches (and I CHALLENGE anyone to achieve a hit rate higher than 3/sec without cheats and without losing an arm here, so forget about becoming as fast as in this video), and the last one removes one of the three weak punches before the strong one in the combo, so they became two. So while Apollo and Clubber were actually beatable, Drago wasn't without knowing a little "cheat". The secret to beat Drago was MISS him with the two weak punches and land the strong one to push him back far enough to don't allow him to DESTROY you and repeat. This required perfect timing in a game with clumsy controls, and every single error meant a knockdown for him.

thumbs up if you played this as a kid, hated this as a kid, grew up tried it again, hated it again, watched this video hoping to see the ending then realizing it wasn't worth the time anyway, but you still own it : D

Who else remembers that scene from Rocky 2 where Apollo went down in round one? And he did it again in Rocky 3 and 4 Also! This game was on point!

Thanks for putting this together, talbot1939, it really gives people an idea of what the game is like with a turbo controller. I remember reading that with a turbo controller it was possible to score 8 hits per second during the second training session, but that is obviously not the case. Surprisingly, it is possible to do just as well without a turbo controller. Rocky is very beatable.

Wow look at Rocky go! He plowed through Lang and Drago like they were Spider Ricco! Never thought I'd see the day. I love how Lang is sporting black trunks in the fight but when he's knock down his trunks are blue.

I played this game back in the day and don't remember Drago being that easy.

Before the rapid speed attachment Drago kicked my ass all the time. When I finally got one it was no mercy for Drago, again and again and again.

He only said that in Rocky 2 because he wanted Rocky to protect his right eye (which Mickey had to cut in the first to reduce the swelling). Remember, he had poor vision at the start of Rocky 2 (which some how never became an issue in the later movies).

He's also wearing the red white and blue trunks in training before Apollo...I noticed both of those things in 1987 when I was 5 years old. In any case, they got one very important detail right: they made rocky a lefty. Even the PS2 game didn't have him as a south paw.

I have this game for my SMS. Actually, on the contrary i used to think for ages, the use of rapid fire or turbo controllers make the training harder do achieve better results. I manually managed to beat the 99 limit ate the first training, reached 7 punches/sec at the second and 90 on the third. It´s really just a matter of timing on the buttons. Just keep pushing the buttons 1 and 2 alternately for good results, it´s easy to get the correct timing. There´s no need for turbo.

It looks like Rocky is wearing a blue janitor's suit at the end. This must be after Paulie lost all his money, and Rocky is getting ready to go clean that house.

We can easely see that this dude used the rapid fire. The rapid fire was very usefull in Rambo 3 and Gungsters Town too.

You needed a special rhythm to win against Drago: punch him him- step back, punch him- step back. You could not win in the infight against him. It took some time until I understood that... 😅

As a 4yo, was baffled and never got past Clubber. Now I’ve got to see the endings for Rambo, Rastan, Snail, and Hangon.

Take a spoon, tilt it so that the bottom curve of the spoon glides over the buttons on your controller. Rub the spoon back and forth quickly and you can make his arms move super fast. This spoon technique works on many games.

Yes I did. Several times. The key to beating Drago is timing. If you time the first two jabs right he'll walk into your straight punch. It's a nice test of endurance and you usually win by decision this way, but if you're timing is right-on you can TKO him. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camcorder so I can't record myself beating it, but I remember seeing a legitimate win here on youtube. It's quite a sense of accomplishment the first time you beat this game without cheating.

the secret to beat Drago is the training vs Lang, you need 7h/s .

The real way to enjoy this game was to invite a friend over, have him or her play Apollo and you choose Drago.
