I found it hard to believe that the guy who played him in this movie had more ties to fighting than I thought. I knew there was that one episode he was in on Friends where he wanted to become the UFC, AND that scene where he was sparring in Iron Man 2. Is Jon Favreau really that into Martial Arts??

True, and the editing of the Marciano-Louis, both before, during and after, is perfect. It makes it look like a horror film, a nightmare. We all know that Marciano will win and that he will feel bad for beating his idol, but it was a job and it had to be done. The way this is portrayed here is masterful, especially after the bout, when the beaten Louis manages to smile and nod at his conqueror, and Marciano sadly lowers his eyes. The transition was done there, Louis was finished, and Marciano was on his way to the crown.

Look the 60's version of Ali was pretty slimmed down so it wouldn't be a huge mismatch. I can't view Rocky as a real heavyweight. Ali was weight wise a real legit heavyweight. Ali would be even sharper than a prime Ezzard Charles who was very fast. Rocky wasn't advanced enough to handle that kinda speed, his defense woulda been too simple i think. I'm certain he wouldn't get walked all over but Ali would have the major upper hand. Ali was a premier talent in his prime, what he did too liston was unheard of, the difficulty other fighters had with Liston was legendary. Ali barely broke a sweat he was unreal good. Good enough to beat anyone any given day.

In this instance I think it'd be a good touch if it did get this correct (they could have turned it on early while showing some good dialogue while waiting, for instance, and that would have emphasized more history in the early days of boxing). If I were to guess, though, I wouldn't be surprised if the people involved in making this movie didn't even think of this, or even knew of it.

I see that Rocky started serious boxing while in the military. I think that many of the military members back in the 40s got their first break in life while serving. Considering the state of the present economy, I think that military life has once again becomes a more viable option for today's disenfranchised youth. Contrary to popular belief, the elimination of the draft consequently helped to further disenfranchise many a poor youth. CAVEAT: Military life isn't for everyone. If you can't stay out of problems with the law, then the military may not be for you. Also dropping out of high school to enlist isn't a reasonable alternative to entertain . However, don t forget that the great Marciano had his first formal amateur bout while completing military duties during WW2. PROCEED WITH CAUTION!!!! & GOOD LUCK!!!!

A great movie with its great actors is one that cannot be described by mere words. It is "felt". It is "experienced". Words are never adequate to describe a great movie because words fall short. This was a great movie. Thank you for posting.

Kind of a stretch, don't you think? I think Stallone's Rocky is better. He got it from The Real Rock. That in itself is s great story about Stallone. How he wrote the script, several wanted to buy it, but Stallone insisted he play Rocky. No studios wanted an unknown. 1 took the chance. His first payday, he went and bought his dog back he had to sell to eat, because he refused to sell his script without the lead part. It's a true underdog story.

I would have loved to see Marciano Vs Lloyd Marshall in 49. That woulda been a great, great fight. Marshall definitely had the power to floor Marciano. An exciting style matchup as Marshall reminds me very much of Walcott's fighting style.

Gene tunney might have been the first heavyweight to retire with 0 losses had it not been for the great Harry Greb. I also have to say in truth that the music that played during the fight between Marciano and Louis really made that fight emotional to be watching.

Technically that info is wrong. James Jeffries retired undefeated at 19-0 as Heavyweight champion and never lost a fight in his prime. He defeated numerous hall of fame boxer's, and perhaps fought in one of the most exciting championship's of all time, a 25 round brawl with Tom Sharkey. Who was still standing at the end with a broken rib protruding out of his skin.
