I've always interpreted Rocky saying, "To you it's Thanksgiving, to me it's Thursday," as meaning that he doesn't have any family or anyone he's close enough with to be with, not that he doesn't care for holiday itself." But I could be wrong about that.

It’s a story of Rocky’s growth as a fighter but more importantly as a person. The perseverance of growing up poor and from a tough neighborhood - surviving a hard life, finding his soul mate and proving yourself to yourself. The training and boxing is just the manifestation of that perceverance.

The great thing about the series is the developmment of the characters and their relaionships. Rocky, Adrian, Mick, Creed, even Paulie. You get so invested and involved in the characters that the boxing is secondary, it's just the backdrop.

When Rocky says, "To me it's Thursday," that's a very important line. He has no one, and holidays don't matter to him. It seems like a throwaway line where he's being callous, but it's really a statement that tells the audience exactly what sort of lonely life he leads.

@@Jason-ft9gg I think your assessment is correct, as well. Adrian was feeling bad because she felt responsible as the woman to provide a meal for Thanksgiving. What makes "Rocky" such an endearing classic is the way characters are written, the exposition is rather long but it makes the ending all the more emotionally rewarding. Just compare your posture in the beginning with you at the end and you get the point. At the end, Mickey and Rocky teamed un and killed their old demons, Adrian had stood up to her brother and won more confidence, Apollo who kept underestimating Rocky (which somehow made the fight result more plausible) learned a humbling lesson and Paulie didn't change much but I like the way he lift the rope so Adrian could get into the ring, it was a subtle but nice touch. Does the film end abruptly? No. Think of it, when the final round ended, Rocky was still standing, winning or losing didn't matter, he went the distance, had won the crowds hearts and his own respect and the love of her life came to embrace him and each one declared love to the other while people were cheering, it is the highest momentum in Rocky's life, the proudest moment ever... the perfect moment for the image to freeze. We leave Rocky and Adrian at their happiest... and we're happy too.

It really had nothing to do with 'the second one' -- Stallone was lucky to get THIS ONE made. No one knew Stallone, and the movie wasn't expected to become a smash hit. The movie was all about internal struggles and demons -- Rocky, Adrian, Paulie, all showed their inner fears and insecurities. The movie is about overcoming odds and great obstacles to achieve personal victory over them. That's why the announcement of the 'winner' of the fight is obscured by Rocky and Adrian's embrace at the end.

The story behind the film being made is just as amazing. Stallone was a struggling actor who at one point had to sell his dog for food (he discussed this on his instagram). Stallone wrong the script for the film and shopped it around to studios with the condition he would get to star. None of them wanted him for the role, but he was offered 300,000 for the script. He turned it down. He eventually finds someone who would make it, and the film wins the Best Picture. He bought his dog back. That was his dog in the film. :)

Fun fact, the dog in this movie, Butkas, is actually Slyvester Stallone's own dog! He's named after great Chicago Bears Linebacker Dick Butkas, he played in the NFL from 1965 to 1973 for the Bears. A split decision means the Champion retains the Title, it's kind of like a tie, but not really, Lol. There are 3 judges, they all score each round as they see it, round by round, (15 round fight if no one is knocked out). At the end of the fight, each of judges pick who they think won. If all 3 of them pick the same fighter, then he's the winner of the Title. If 1 of 3 picks the other fighter, that is called a split decision, and the Champion keeps the Title. For a Champion to lose the Title, the other fighter has to win the fight, he has to get all 3 judges to pick him, to take the Title away from the champion.

Rocky has become such a thing where it is looked at as a punch drunk film... The message of the original Rocky film is totally pure forever... It's about proving you aren't just a nobody and standing up to something. It doesn't have to be fame or riches. It's about what you believe in.

Theres no time for there to be a tournament to fight Apollo. The whole problem is time. Theres only 5 weeks till the fight. They can't change the date of the fight because they've already reserved the date at the venue. They have to pay that no matter what. So if they postponed the fight they'd have to pay twice. Theyve paid for advertising for the orriginal date, so again they'd have to pay twice. They'd lose money having the fight. No qualifyied fighter will take the fight on short notice because they won't be at thier best. So they offer it to a non qualified fighter who don't care about not having enough time to prepare. Its a great opertunity for them win or lose.

@@russellward4624 that is actually not true. Holidays were big sporting event days. That is why they always have the "bedlum game" on Thanksgiving (Oklahoma University vs. Oklahoma State), which was VERY personal for my family (dad went to OU, uncle went to OSU, and shouting matches ensued LOL) There used to always be big football games on many holidays, as well as boxing events. Generally New Years and Thanksgiving were the most popular for that. Even "fake" sports would do the same, as Thanksgiving again used to be a tradition for NWA/WCW Starrcade and WWF Survivor Series. Honestly, the only holiday that seems to be primarily a picnic holiday is Labor Day

As many people will say, this, at least to me, is not a movie about boxing. It’s a love story that happens to have some boxing. That’s why at the end, they have the love story with the results of the boxing relegated to background audio that you could almost miss if you’re focused on Rocky and Adrian.

She is the sister of The Godfather director Farancis Ford Copola & the aunt of actor Nicolas Cage..

Eventually sold it to ABC. A friend he had done a movie with a few years earlier is Henry Winkle. He was The Fonz on the TV show, Happy Days! He was the biggest star in the world at the time. He told ABC, u dont give Stallone the script vack, i leave the show! They gave him Back the script!! The guy here, singing outside by the fire barrel, and in 2, is his real brother, Frank Stallone!

Points through out the rounds goes too Creed. It was too little too late for Rocky so its understandable he lost. But winning was never Rocky's interest. It was going the distance. No loosers in this movie, Winner in Boxing goes too Creed, winner in a personal level goes too Rocky. Both is Victorious outcomes.
