    Here in australia broken up bits of basalt are used to make concrete. It's referred to as 'blue metal' and is added to portland cement with sand for concrete structures.

    Thanks very much for this. The local beach by the village where I grew up the sand is black. I'm told this is because the rock is basalt. I took a rock home recently to look and and it is jet black but unlike all the examples I find online, this rock is smooth - almost glassy. The hornblende seems more smooth and glassy. Is this because this rock has a higher percentage of hornblende?

    Hi, how well does basalt handle heat? I am considering using it in a pizza oven as the base. Oven operates below 900 Celsius? Thanks.
