Rocko's Modern Life is a show way ahead of it's time, even with the Netflix movie. Despite your thoughts on Heffer, the episode that reveals he's literally adopted and raised by wolves explains so much on his character that it makes him a more rounded character in the grand scheme. Also, please note for that this show, they firmly establish Heffer is a steer and not a cow. There is a difference... which a certain OTHER Nicktoon completely forgets for the sake of wacky hijinks.

The episode in which (known as at the time) Ralph was introduced was called "I Have No Son!" - which, given that Rachael ended up trans*, was an oddly accurate title in retrospect.

It is almost as if the writers intended a transition arc and couldn't convince the censors to do it. So they decided to do it 25 years later. I think one of the writers said he always intended Rachael to transition.

  • @Clawdragoons

    @Clawdragoons

    4 жыл бұрын

@@mrmimeisfunny That would be pretty dandy. I think it's cool that they included a trans* character either way, but if they attempted it back in the 90s, when it would have been even more controversial due to public opinion at the time, that's even better. It's a bit sad that often individuals would like to tackle controversial issues in their art, and to make something of a statement, but this individual progressivism, such as it is, is mediated by corporate hesitancy to do anything that might alienate some watchers. The forces of social progress and the force of capital often find themselves at odds.

Nitro Indigo Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's the "wildcard" sense of asterisk, I think, since there's more than one possible word ending that can follow it. One of my favorite things about this show is that despite the massive cast of characters, they literally only had six voice actors: Carlos Alazraqui, Tom Kenny, Doug Lawrence, Charlie Adler, Linda Wallem and Joe Murray (and Joe only voiced Rachel Bighead). No auditions needed, just five extremely talented voice actors rotating their voices for different characters depending on the needs of the scene/character and Joe voicing his author avatar because the staff thought it'd be funny to hear their normally level-headed, soft-spoken boss raise his voice and sound crazy.

Bev *lifts Rocko* Ed: "BEV! Quit picking up neighbors!" (favorite and possibly most underrated line) I actually adored this cartoon as a kid. And, since you didn't mention it, I want to add that this show has a TON of referential humor - anything from Monty Python to The Pink Panther film A Shot in the Dark. As a kid, I didn't get the references (almost at all) but it was still always funny because RML knew how to disguise referential humor as random silliness and it did it exceptionally well. It was the same with the adult humor. I didn't get all the jokes as a kid, but I laughed at how silly they were. Yes, I still appreciate RML more as an adult, but nothing was really lost on me watching it as a kid viewing it as silly over adult. And, I actually always thought Closet Clown was more that Ed was discovering he was bi. I'm sure the intention was that he was gay, but in context, Ed still loved Bev and they were still married so it struck me more as Ed realizing he's also into guys.

  • @shwahgamer

The only thing about Rocko I can remember from when I was very young was an episode where they became nudists, or I think Heffer did and had a bunch of nudists over at Rocko's, something like that. After all the horrible stuff he put up with, Heffer coming out as a nudist and throwing the party was the last straw, and as Rocko gets ready to kick him out, Heffer tells him that Rocko's a shitty roommate so he's leaving. It was hilarious XD

I'll refresh your memory. Heffer decided to just have a nudist party over at Rocko's house without consulting him first, and when Rocko tries to shut it down one of the nudists strips him against his will. This is the straw that breaks the camel's back after Heffer spent the entire episode mooching off Rocko.

3:42 honestly people complain about this stuff because its often use as an excuse for bad writing and they get use to complain over and over . because the internet encourage echo chambers were people just re enforce certain behaviors. i know about this because i went through something similar with my own father, in which i kept re reinforcing myself the idea. that he was always in the wrong and i was always the victim. not that my father doesnt have flaws or aint an ahole evey once in a while.. but there were moment were i was toxically trap in a thinking loop. making thing in my head worst that they actually were or not pointing ever the finger at myself... creating thinking habits something that we don't talk enough and i feel a lot of people could benefit from knowing they exist and that they can become victims of it. with that said. i actually think the rocko did it with rechel was really well made. im also think its clever that they use a frog for it. one of the few species in the planet that are know for having sex transitions in nature. and the movie was rather kind with mr big head. showing him as not some one bad but having a hard time adapting to the changing world.

Honestly, the frog changing sex thing is a pretty minor thing and is probably a coincidence. Who the character was and how trans people who don't know their trans often have their dysphoria just manifest in general feelings of sadness/depression without them really having any idea why they feel that way really feels to me like the main reason why they picked who they did. TBH, there's a lot of stuff w/ the special that really shows that they talked to a fair amount of trans people about their experiences.

8:34 Rocko having no hangups could be believable in that moment, he was hyperfocused on bringing the show back that any of those hangups would be very deep in his mind. That can't be said for Heffer and Filbur and that was a waste because they could have represented the old millennials like me that are usually less open about LGBTQ than the younger ones.

Rocko's Modern Life is one of my favorites on Nickelodeon. It was one of the most relatable shows like Hey Arnold and SpongeBob SquarePants. We always see Rocko usually doing a normal task like all humans do and the writers make it very creative and entertaining to watch. They take most of the things on this show and transfer it to SpongeBob and make it better. Because Rocko is as good as SpongeBob, I don't understand why this show is underappreciated while SpongeBob becomes a global phenomenon.

Disneycembers that ruined the series are the ones on Howl’s Moving Castle, Frozen 1, The Emperor’s New Groove, Howl’s Moving Castle, Big Hero 6, High School Musical 1 & 3 (he just likes to defend mean-spiritedly kiddie products of the early 21st Century made to pander to teenagers to make them scream to the point where they dampen their pants, even more than Lindsay Ellis with “Dear Stephenie Meyer [I’m Sorry]”), the Monsters’ Inc. duology (especially the original), Peter Pan (but he is right on one thing, its sequel is pretty f’in awesome! A massive improvement over the original, where its only aspects that aged very well are the pirate characters, it’s animation, Tiptup and its song of “Faith, Trust and Love”), Aladdin (surely, he better realizes why it’s so beloved now than then, but it doesn’t change the fact that as a sexist, he was unfairly not-so-positive to Princess Jasmine by comparing her negatively to her woke live-action remake counterpart with much less character), Meet the Robinsons (which Mr. Enter did an Admirable Animation of, so serves him right!) and et cetera et cetera.

To be honest, I didn't really care that Ralph transitioned to Rachel in the special. I was like Rocko and the others, I just gave one short "OK" in response and moved on. It didn't bother me and, to me, it made sense for the character. Ralph in the original run was always miserable and unfulfilled, perhaps less so until he reunited with his parents, but he was still quite unhappy with his life. Moving away from making cartoons and transitioning made him happy. I still thought it was quite funny that Joe Murray kept the same voice for Rachel, just to hear that deep booming bass coming out of a... a frog with tits essentially. Still, seeing Rachel break out the pencils to save his dad and his company was touching. No, what really irked me was the message at the end with "change is a good thing" being hammered in over the head over and over and over. I mean, shit, even Mr. Bighead who basically disowned his daughter (briefly, mind you) half way through, only to act as the voice of reason for Rocko was... odd, to me. Then again, maybe that was intentional. Like, perhaps this whole special was targeted towards those hopelessly stuck in nostalgia and crowing at the first sign of change in their beloved franchises. I've also voiced my anger towards changes in shows and movies myself. So yeah, there is that to think about. Incidentally, I do hope the new partnership between Netflix and Nickelodeon works out. The streaming wars is starting to heat up and Netflix needs a lot of bullets in it's belt.

I'll be honest. Ralph's transition to Rachel just doesn't sit well with me. If anything, I think it would've been better if Heffer's brother was the one to have a sex change. I mean, the episode where we see him, he leaves wearing a cheerleader outfit, causing his dad to go ballistic, with the mom just saying that they were afraid to tell him. In fact, I can see that focusing on Heffer's family a bit more would've been more interesting, considering how they all act: Heffer's adopted, the grandfather's a "racist", a mom with nerve problems, and a dad with anger issues and then top it off with a trans for a sibling. It would've been great to show that despite the flaws, differences, and issues that the Wolfe family has with themselves and or others, they're still able to respect each other and still view each other as family.

I think the whole "Ralph/Rachel" Bighead thing caught people off guard because it comes completely out of left field. Like you point out Rocko's Modern Life ALWAYS dealt with mature themes, but for Ralph/Rachel it's not something the show proper had set up or dropped hints at. I get on a 90s "kids" show you really couldn't without the censors/network forcing you to drop it, but it feels like a retcon to change an established character's gender without any hint that was a part of their character. Like you pointed out with Ed Bighead and the "Coming Out" metaphor, they could have done something similar with Ralph and used a metaphor to get it past the censors..THEN it would make sense in Static Cling since it was set up through metaphor.

@@Maniacman2030 I'm glad someone agrees and can offer an unbiased opinion. People who didn't care for Ralph becoming Rachel get stereotyped as being transphobic and don't address the actual issue - it being a big reveal with no setup. People don't just randomly change their gender without there being any signs that are unhappy with who they currently are. A way they could have foreshadowed it would be if in "Wacky Deli" the reason Ralph/Rachel wanted to quit making The Fatheads was because it "didn't let him/her express his true self" and while they could be vague on what s/he meant by that, it would have been something Static Cling could have called back to with his/her transistion. That s/he was unhappy that the culture of the '90s didn't let Ralph/Rachel express who they really were deep down - a woman.

@Ryan Williams Probably a rhetoric question but I love answering rhetoric questions so: I'd say the middle ground lies in phrasing. If you say "I hated the Korra Ending" then it's unwise but not unreasonable to assume you're a bigot. If you say "The Korra Ending came out of nowhere and didn't seem founded in previous character development" then your reasoning is a lot more clear and easier to discuss - just like in this comment thread. If people still call you a bigot that's their problem. If you really desire to keep people from calling you a bigot (and you really aren't one) you can back it up with a positive example, like, idk, Ruby + Sapphire are a much better example of a well developed gay relationship but this Korra thing aint it

One thing that stands out about Rocko from other cartoons is how while many cartoon characters tend to overreact to situations, Rocko is just cool about things, like how he's mature enough to accept that life isn't always perfect. Rocko seems like a nice person to hang out with. Ironically, Rocko's Modern Life came out exactly 10 years before I was born, so it's anniversary lands on my birthday. Like the one where Rocko gets a credit card and gets bills, the driving lesson episode, and the air travel one. No other cartoon at the time had premises like these. Hell, there was even one episode where Mr. BigHead climbs the corporate ladder (literally) by using a magic 8-ball for all his decision-making. And if that isn't a fantastic display of imposter syndrome as a working adult, I have no idea what is.

I actually really like Rocko’s Modern Life as a kid, I remember watching it every morning as I was getting ready for school back when I was in 2nd grade, this was around 1999/2000. Mr. Bighead reminded me of my dad in too many ways & there was a lot of humor that did go over my head but a lot, I still caught. My parents openly let me watch the Drew Carey Show with them as a kid, although I missed a good amount of adult jokes, I still caught some. There’s stuff in there that I was happy to see, being a 8 year old girl going to Catholic school, yeah, it was nice watching something a tad riskay. As an adult however, it’s a whole different show & was worth the revisit when I had just moved into a new apartment in 2014, I had a friend over that had never seen Rocko’s Modern Life & I told him he was missing out so we decided to watch a few episodes, we practically made it through the whole series. As a kid, I’d laugh at the fact there were naked people & other stupid stuff but as an adult, I was like, this is relatable on too many levels. I did buy the entire series on DVD, lucky me I happened to be in Barnes & Noble when they had a 75% off DVD sale, it was the last day of the sale & it was the last copy of Rocko’s Modern Life DVD set. Scored huge, it’s a series I can watch multiple times over. As for starting episode, my mind jumped to the beginning of the series because although you voiced valid complaints on Heifer, the episode where Rocko & him end up going to that carnival that steals all their money is a good starting point & is relatable no matter your age, as someone who is addicted to claw machines & carnival games, it got me, that was too true. Not the best episode but still a good starting point. I remember it being near the beginning, not sure if it was one of the first episodes given last time I watched it was in 2014, I don’t fully remember the order of episodes.

I love that you keep comparing rocko's modern life to spongebob , which tbh are very similar shows. 2 characters living in the adult world. If i have to choose , i'd pick rocko's modern life . I love spongebob, but at least rocko didn't overstayed it's welcome.

Not to mention the modern episodes of SpongeBob keeps getting worse, while when Rocko comes back in Static Cling, it's just as great as the original Rocko's Modern Life series.

Joe Murray who also created Camp Lazlo is a genius...the unique animation style, the funny animal characters, the satire and humor make this cartoon show a great experience. I havent grown up with Nickelodeon ( just with Cartoon Network and later Fox Kids) so I discovered Rockos Modern Life and I ve been watching the series last spring. It was awesome !

I like that you actually addressed an issue I had with Static Cling that isn't talked much about. Regardless of where you stand on something, PC culture, or just have your reasoning and opinions for either side, it's controversial one way or another. Controversial doesn't necessarily mean bad, but it does mean it generates a lot of debate. It's not a unanimous opinion if that makes sense. Anyway, what I didn't like was that it not only felt unrealistic that these guys from the 90s would accept it without question or wouldn't even be the least perplexed by something so different from their culture in the 90s but that its message of accepting change seemed far too intolerant ironically enough. It's that "Rocko must accept change or else he will be socially persecuted." Even if he did just come to accept changes for himself (and not necessarily for others) in his own time, I don't buy that he would get over it so quickly in the midst of the pressure. Sure, it's a comedy and silly, but it was trying to play a real message, so the arguments come off as a straw man because you don't know whether the representation of a character or their motives is accurate to real people. "Here's what an ignorant, intolerant boomer looks like." Does that make sense? Basically, no matter where you stand, I think it didn't do a very good or fair job of representing both sides. Some things felt unrealistic when it was trying to be realistic (as in, talking about a real-world topic of a controversial nature). I mean, we are talking about Ed Bighead here. I'm sure there are people who do act like him, but his portrayal seemed kind of off to me. The only reason was that he didn't like change, which yeah, is an easier argument to address. I feel that real world reasons are more complicated than that, and not just for ethical or religious reasons. Some ways I think this could have been handled better was to show a little more realistic reactions and decisions. For example, the Rock, Heff, and Filbert could have been initially shocked, and then Rachel/Ralph could just briefly bring them up to speed. Maybe they accept her/his decision and treat her as the friend they always had before. Information is needed to make a decision, and she/he should be able to accept what they think as well. Then, Mr. Bighead could have had an issue that is unresolved but still loves his child. You don't have to agree with your parents, and they don't have to agree with you, but that shouldn't affect how you treat and care for each other. I feel that's a more practical solution rather than "just accept all change or else." It encourages discussion rather than fighting as well as maintaining relationships. Third, for whatever reason, no one had the idea to tell Rocko he could easily watch, rent, or download the Fatheads online. Heck, he could even buy a DVD. It's so easy nowadays to watch older shows. Even if not that, maybe instead of him just out of the blue accepting all the change, why not introduce him to a new series he might like or show him reboots of his old favorite shows? Gradually adjusting him from the 90s and helping him find other things he can enjoy or new ways to enjoy what he liked before, little by little informing him of what actually has changed and why, that sounds like a better message rather than just forcing him to accept any and all change. Imagine being put into his shows. You are zoomed 20 years into the future, and something that you miss is gone or something that you thought was socially unacceptable, morally wrong, etc., was suddenly acceptable. Your entire view on life would be majorly and quickly attacked. Future shock. Even if you think you would change or not, that would take more time and education. This is why I hate -phobia words. They really misrepresent people. People who simply disagree or have their own reasons are called -phobics, etc. They are expected to accept someone else's way of life, loosen their values, reasoning, or whatever other reasons they have, to give into another. This is misunderstood as "hate," even if the person loves and really cares for them. You can accept a person without accepting their actions or lifestyle. If my child was to do something that universally is thought to be bad like bullying and wounding someone else, do I hate my child? No. I want the best for them. Do I disagree or even dislike what they did? Yes I can. Very much. Even if someone could not understand why I would disagree, that is not the problem. You both can control how you treat and feel about each other. My grandmother is from Japan, and she disowned her younger sister for 70 years because she didn't like a decision she made. She regretted it in her old age and is on very good terms with her now. She didn't have to agree with her decision to still keep her in the family and love her. Acceptance goes both ways.

My wife and I definitely enjoyed watching the Netflix special earlier this year. I really wish the original show was available on Hulu like so many other 90s Nicktoons are. Hey Arnold, Doug, Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys, and even the first three seasons of Ren and Stimpy are available on Hulu. Same with Jimmy Neutron and others. It baffles me that Rocko's Modern Life still isn't. Then again SpongeBob used to be on Hulu and isn't anymore
