Well you did it again smiler, you make me jealous every time, you certainly have the nose for it, a real rockhound, finding rocks and crystals everywhere. How is Daisy now, have you had to put a tee shirt on her ? I know how how my jealousy can be cured, I will move into your log shed.LOL

Nice finds. Next time I drive through this area I'm stopping to take a look. Have passed this area by too many times as a passenger. :

The whole area has potential for interesting minerals. I tried to take a video last time I was up and finding tremolite and amazonite, but I have to return for better footage.

That was an adventure and really cool with using a blackout light. Thank for great experience with you, missed seeing Little Miss Daisy in that one.

Daisy was in the truck. I don't like letting her out on the side of a highway. Right afterwards, I took her to a river for a swim, so I think she forgave me...

I did not expect to spend as much time as I did at this spot. It is not acknowledged in any records that I could find. The fluorescents were a huge bonus. Thanks.

What type of fluorescent light are you using, a hand held flashlight black light ? Is one better than another or all of them the same? I have a small hand held black light and the only rock I have, of which there are thousands, are ruby and sapphire rough.

I had a cheap long wave (black light) for a long while and have since bought an (expensive) called Way too Cool. It does short, med and long wave. I am not an expert on UV lights, but have learned that you want one that will do short wave for sure and probably med as well. If you are collecting rocks, get one that will light up the ground when you are standing, so you don't have to be bent over all the time. As with anything, you get what you pay for...

Thanks Lizzy. This is the perfect time of year to collect here - no bugs. The window of opportunity is short because soon there will be snow. That will slow down my adventures somewhat until spring.

Smokey Quartz needs some kind of a radiation source to give it it's color. Could it be that the lead in the area is derived from decayed Uranium or Thorium?

I was wondering why it is that while some Calcite specimens were fluorescent and some were not ? as well as what would cause the crumbling effect to much of the road cut ?
