Rockhounding Agates at Ore Car Mine- Lake Mead NRA, Las Vegas, Nevada

In this episode of Solomon's Vegas Adventures, Solomon, Deanna, Eyubed, Stormy, and Taylor ventured out to the Ore Car Mine- a site located in Lake Mead where you can find Agate- a cryptocrystalline form of Quartz revered and treasured as a gemstone and used in jewelry.
The site is owned by the Southern Nevada Gem & Mineral Society and you are allowed to go and collect whatever you find out there. We found some cool specimens of Agate. If you are into rockhounding and you live in or are visiting Las Vegas, this is a great site to do it!
To get to Ore Car Mine, enter Lake Mead National Recreation Area. It is $20/car if you do not have a National Parks Pass, but if you have one, it is free. Take Northshore Road (Highway 167) east until Mile Marker 16. On the left, there will be a parking lot/pull off and a dirt road. You can park here and hike up to the site if you wish (only a 1 mile hike), or you can drive up the road. It says 4x4 recommended, but honestly, a sedan could make it.
Feel free to take as much as you want, but don't be a jerk and take like everything... collect within reason!

there is so much crazy geology happening in this zone. you would be astounded by what you come across just by spending some time walking the area. it is easily worth your time simply for the rockhounding alone.

Please beware. It’s not paved the whole way and, if you continue driving down across the River bed from where these kids parked, you might get stuck in the loose river bed sand. I know because I did it (Got stuck in the sand). The sign says that 4WD is recommended and you should really heed the warning. Also, if you decide to walk it, make sure you have plenty water with you, especially if it’s hot. We have Verizon and service is spotty. If you get up near the mine and pass out due to dehydration, you can’t call for help. I’m not trying to discourage anybody because it’s really a cool place. I just want you to be careful.

Very good advice listen to Jeh Jeh! 👍 Every time it rains the drop down into the wash changes also. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. Between rains it gets rutted up by people flooring it trying to climb out. Best advice is pull off the road onto the gravel and drive up to the lip of the wash, then stop and walk the path down a bit. If you question the route at all, your vehicle probly isn't capable. Getting down is easy but getting back out is usually the issue for people who aren't prepared. Have fun, be safe + bring plenty of water!✌

Fun video + nice work! I always enjoy hiking around this area even when not collecting. So is the dark reddish stuff with thick crust all over the ground just common agate? I collected 1 small piece to cut and it's really hard on my saw that's for sure 😂 Some of it has beautiful reds greens & oranges inside! 👍

That is chert in the horsepring formation in the range of 15 million at that spot. Chert of course is silica agate that formed big slabs and sheets. horsespring formation was a period roughly 30 million years ago to a few million years ago that was material flooding down and land locked lakes. When the colorado came to life the material could then drain out into the river and ended the horse spring. The more waxy material has more water content in it sort of opalized. had you walked over and up the wash and up onto and into "the crater" with better stuff. you could have soon stuff like rose quartz type material and other stuff. that section sort of paved basically shut down the mine and he got big fine and almost was sent to jail for dumping down asphalt for the mining trucks to not sink down into the soft gypsum road. you did not even touch the tip of the iceberg by stopping where you did. when people drive BACK UP the berm where you walked down it can be very hard to get back up that 20 foot stretch if just a normal car. Hope you saw the "witches devil worshippers rock circle on the right up about 70 feet off the road. skulls dummies , dolls, witches signs the works. it was about the half way point.

When I was out there wandering around the bowl of fire I found a bone that looked like a human leg bone. It wasn't whole it was one end of it and it was old. I didn't know about the witches circle though! Scary...

The mine is not within the boundary of the National Recreation Area. It is a grandfathered mining claim that was excluded from the National Recreation Area when the area was designated. Collecting within the boundaries of a National Recreation Area or National Park is a federal crime!

You miss the best of the mine!! Should’ve keep walking east and you would find very old structures and the mine it self with more crystalline mineral.
