This is what turned the tide in the Cold War. The Soviets had us on the ropes for a while but the USA was able to make the hot tag and get the win and not too long after this, the Berlin Wall fell. All thanks to Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson.

I remember watching this match nearly 32 years ago here in Philly, PA on WPHL 17 on a very hot Saturday at 2pm! Backstory, this was the R & R's debut in the NWA. Also, it was incredibly hot inside this arena during the taping. Like Tony Schiavone used to say, the NWA was the "major league" of professional wrestling!

philaman1972 -- There was no AC in the auditorium, hence the reason why all four guys are sweating buckets. They're conditioning is other worldly, I think most of us would have passed out or been unable to move after 10 minutes. Incredible match with a phenomenal finish.

I was in Madrid Spain and met a fellow from Philly who was my age (I’m from philly too). I asked him if the road warriors beat the Russians for the title and he goes “the rock n roll express are the champs now they beat the Russians”. Summer of 85. Break dancing was big and wrestling was white hot.

Agreed. Everything is just so repetitive nowadays (especially in the WWE). I don't mind heavily scripted matches, Macho Man Randy Savage is one of my favorites and he used to block every single move out. But it's different now-- people more or less look the same, and more or less wrestle the same. I've been jumping back in time too, especially watching NWA stuff and early WWF stuff. I never get tired of it. There's something very different about wrestling during this era-- the crowds are insane to watch and the characters are fun to root for.

BorkLaser -- Eh, Robert and Ricky look alright for their ages... I mean, Ricky is 60 and Robert is 58. They did drugs and abused alcohol when they were younger, it was going to catch up with them eventually. If both guys lost 10-15 pounds, they'd look great IMO. If anything, I always thought Ric Flair was the man who aged the worse out of his generation.

  • @BorkLaser

Regardless, I think both guys have lost weight. Robert, in particular, used to look bigger than he is now. Losing 10-15 or even 20 pounds can totally change how someone looks, especially when you're older and your body's metabolism slows down. Honestly, I'm just happy that both men are alive and well. There are too many people from their generation who have passed away far too soon.
