Rock Island 10mm review

Can I use my 9mm RIA frame to shoot 10mm? Guess we will find out. Rock Island Armory makes some great 1911's and today we take a look at one of their 10mm's. Not only is it a 10mm but its a high capacity and has a threaded barrel. This 10mm is a total beast of a gun but lets see how it runs.

    I have a RI 1911 that was a hand me down from my dad when he passed, I love it. Its one of my favorite guns. Plus, I heard that they bought Colt's original mold back in the 50s and thats the basis of their 1911s. Im not too sure if thats true but after firering their 1911 it feels like the other 1911s ive shot (colt and springfield). I keyhole a lot with my RI.

    Very nice. My uncle has that same one. Takes a good 500 rounds to break it in. Clean it really well and oil the hell out of it before you take it out the first time, keep it well lubed while breaking in and also keep in mind that you may need to get a lighter spring for range ammo. The factory spring is tuned in for heavier rounds than the cheap range ammo most people use. Not sure the spring weight they come with but some people do see some issues during break in and then swap to a softer spring. Past that…great guns

    I have a single stack and it's alot of fun to shoot. The only thing I noticed with it is if you get it dirty it won't run worth a hoot or if you run it without enough lube it'll give you fits and one of the fiber optic pieces in the rear sight flew out some where at the range so I have to replace that but it had done a fairly good job considering my learning curve towards it.

  • @360TacticalSolutions

    @360TacticalSolutions

    4 ай бұрын

    Excellent question. I would be willing to bet it’s a fair amount. How else do they manage to sell the guns they do at those prices. Thats going to go for both companies of course. On the bright side upgrading the safety and whatever else isnt that expensive and in my opinion I dont think it matters. Ive had really good experience with my RIA guns. 3 of those are 10mm which I would think would put MIM parts to the test. I think it’s more a way for people to brag and companies to charge more. As far as Tisas vs RIA…hands down im taking the RIA. I dont know a ton or have a ton of experience with the Tisas but I know a fair amount about RIA. In the Philippines they are well respected for their pricing and quality. Many law enforcement and military use their guns as thats where they originated from. The guns have just gotten better since the deal with Armscore was made. 3 10mm and 2 9mm and right now im looking at ordering another RIA in .45 because these guns just work

Love the pistol, the machining (I'm a t & d maker) is flawless as is the parkerized finish. Very solid lock up, a little heavy but so am I. Well I don’t have the TCM but I have the 9mm and I swapped the 10mm slide over to the 9mm frame and it ran the same. You wouldn’t be able to find any visual differences. So if you have the TCM/9 already you can expect the 10 to feel the same in your hand

    The 10mm is definitely a beast. It’s not a 9mm but also not a .357 either. I wouldn’t recommend it as a conceal carry round for sure but they are incredible hiking type guns. I do kind of feel that my 10mm M&P is more controllable even though it’s a plastic gun. I attribute that to the grip size and shape. I’m currently looking at a single stack 10mm 1911 and I think it’s going to actually handle better than the double stack because of it’s smaller grip size

    Why do 1911’s need to run wet? How lubed does RI need to run smoothly? I have a Colt Series 70 that won’t run worth a damn.

  • @360TacticalSolutions

    @360TacticalSolutions

    Жыл бұрын

    Thats a good question. First, I wouldnt say the RIA needs to be dripping lol but it does need well lubed in order to run properly. The thing about all 1911’s being so thirsty is about their tight tolerances and friction. How much oil does the engine on a corvette need? Well the answer is enough to keep it from seizing up. Your average polymer pistol is built with very loose tolerances because it costs less, takes less time and makes a gun that someone can use and abuse with very little upkeep without it failing. The trade off is loose tolerances affect overall accuracy. Sure I can be accurate with my M&P or a Glock but nowhere near like you can with a 1911 or 2011. Now because of how tightly things fit together on those guns it takes very little dust or debris to create excess friction which will slow down and inhibit the entire mechanical operation of the gun. I wouldnt say that 1911’s need overly oiled but they are a somewhat complicated machine compared to a striker fired polymer pistol…they are more along the lines of a race gun and they do need to be clean and oiled to run at peak performance. Hope that explanation helps. For a lot of people the 1911 style isnt a good fit. I know at first it was frustrating for me with so many parts and pieces to keep clean and oiled and almost constant maintenance. When you get one that runs right though they are amazing.

    Mine jams on almost every round. With 3 mags, I was only able to get around 6 rounds to feed without jamming. I'm not sure what the pronkem is.

    I would start with breaking it down and cleaning the hell out of it and then giving it a generous amount of oil when putting it back together. A lot of time when they are new they use a thicker oil and between being manufactured, imported, distributed and finally making it to you...a lot of crap builds up in the oil and it can cause issues. If all 3 mags are doing the same thing then clearly its not the mags. Try buying a box of higher velocity ammo and seeing if it performs the same. These guns, especially the 10mm take some breaking in. My uncles took 500 rounds or so before it broke in to the point it ran nice and smooth. Some people will change out springs and that can help but thats a can of worms I don't recommend for someone that isn't experienced.

    @@360TacticalSolutions I sent a warranty request to RIA. I'll let you know what they say. I tested it over and over again this evening, looking at it up close. I'm not a gunsmith, but I am a mechanical engineer. It looks like the feed ramp has an issue, or the gun wasn't manufactured with the proper dimensions and/or tolerances. The slide is properly removing the round from the magazine, and the extractor appears to be in the right position. It just jams as soon as the front of the round runs into the barrel. It's possible it could be as simple as a replacement barrel.

    Banana hands? My hands are XL, I'm 6'3" and 280 lbs. There are men, and there are girly men with girly hands. Just bought a 10mm RIA Ultra FS HC and love, love, love it. It fit my hands perfectly, weight is fine and it sits on my hip very well, I will be concealed carrying this with two extra mags (49 rounds of 10mm, holy shyte Batman). I'm not insinuating you are a girly man just like you didn't insinuate I'm a Gorilla (?) although I am a banana fan. All in fun brother, liked the review. Semper Fi

    Where are you living now, just out of curiosity? Using any of those weapons you listed would put you at a major disadvantage in terms of home defense. I’m not sure if it’s that you hold issue with semi auto weapons or if there is another reason behind it but I wouldn’t recommend those to protect the house
