P.S - One true sad fact about the dog character Patou. He is voiced by the late Phil Harris. You may know him as he voiced beloved Disney animated characters like Baloo from The Jungle Book, Thomas O'Malley from Aristocats, and Little John from Robin Hood. This film marks his final film since he retire unfortunately he passed away in 1995. I will missed him very very very very very much.

@@durece100 A boring & predictable story, annoying and often infuriating characters, infantile dialogue, lackluster musical numbers, padding and pandering that insults the audience rather than entertains it, and a tacked on moral that makes absolutely no sense and is at odds with the lack of character development out of the main leads. This movie is the literal equivalent of jingling keys in front of a baby for an hour and a half. It’s junk food in movie form, and it’s easily worse than Rock-a-Doodle, Anastasia, or even Titan A.E. About the ONLY positives I can give for ATICP is the (often) beautiful animation and the original movie concept. Beyond that though, neither one of those qualities makes up for how insulting, annoying, and downright time-wasting it is.

That was a funny way to start the video. I honestly don't care about this movie, and I do find a lot of the characters really annoying and hard to cope with, especially Edmond. I do like the Grand Duke of Owls though. He's a really fun character and every time I come back to this movie, it's only for the scenes with him. Some of the songs I do like, and even find funny, but everything else on the other hand doesn't work for me, but I don't regard this as Don Bluth's worst movie. To me, that title would go to "Troll in Central Park," but if you think "Rock-A-Doodle" is worse, that's ok. Uh oh, it looks like we're gonna be in for quite the storm with "Tentacolino." I have a feeling it's gonna be rough, but to the dude who requested that film for a review...man, you sure were salty over the "Fievel Goes West" review. Geez!

To be honest, I would have love to see Disney's own animated version of Chanticleer compared to Don Bluth's film version. If this movie gets made, this has a lot of potential and promise to become one of Disney's best animated films next to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Frozen and Zootopia. And it is really such a shame that this really didn't get to be made or see the light of day by Disney.

@@RiseofTaitoShirei I consider it Don Bluths worst film because like Rock a Doodle, it panders to very young little kids alienating older audiences like me and no saying "It's a kids movie" is no excuse. Yes, its a kids movie, but look at Disney, Pixar, and animated films like The Peanuts Movie. They may be kids movies, but at least they have some appeal to bring in adults like myself. Thumbelina on the other hand fails to include something to appeal adults as well like myself. Other than that, the songs are a cringworthy pain to the ears, the characters are either bland, rushed, or annoying, the story is terribly written and makes no sense, and the voice acting especially from Jodi Benson of all people, one of my favorite voice actors and the voice of one of my favorite childhood characters Ariel from The Little Mermaid, is really annoying and it's painful to listen to. Not to mention, it's very unoriginal as it rips off Disney a lot in this movie. So, yeah. Not only is this movie Don Bluth's worst film IMO, but it's one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

I noticed the vast majority of Seal of Garbage recipients to date are CGI films, while the only hand-drawn features so far are this one, Happily Ever After, that moldy Jetsons movie, Belle's Magical World, GRANDMAGOTRUNOVERBYAREINDEER and The Legend of the Titanic. The amout of CGI films that failed your reviews largely outnumber the traditionally animated ones, and even some that seemed to have been a lock to receive a Seal of Garbage before their reviews (like A Dinosaur's Story and Quest for Camelot) were ultimately spared from the brunt, maybe just barely, but still managed to avoid that fate overall. Maybe you sympathize with traditional animation much easier than with CGI? Is there an inherent element in hand-drawn animation that makes you generally more forgiving towards it? Or it can probably just be a matter of coincidence.

My thoughts on "Rock-A-Doodle" and "A Troll in Central Park" are the opposite of yours, Animat. The former may be a complete mess in its story, but in a way, I find it kind of fascinating how so many different plot points/scenes could be strung together for a movie like this. The latter, however, was mostly boring and overly saccharine, especially when a good chunk of the film was just filler. Granted, I also used to watch "Rock-A-Doodle" quite often as a kid, so maybe that's why I still like it to some extent. But if it makes you feel any better, Marzgurl also thought "Rock-A-Doodle" was Bluth's worst film. I'm not sure if it's still up online, but if it is, I recommend checking out her review of that movie. HOLY COW! You're reviewing that... that... thing with... the... rapping shark... next? Best of luck, man.

The origins of Chanticleer date back to the Middle Ages, where he was a character of the "Reynart the Fox" anthology (he was then called 'Chanticleer the cock'; weird, right?). Fast-forward to 1902 where French dramatist Edmond Rostand decided to adapt the 13th century tales into a four-act play featuring 70 characters, with almost 200 different suits and nearly 8 years of rehearsal for a mixed premiere in 1910.

I just noticed something I don’t think anyone else has about the part where human Edmond is walking on the fence. When he kicks his legs in the air, you can catch a very brief moment where the edge of his leg is blurred and where it’s pretty obvious it was a green screen and it happens again as the fence door swings away from the audience with it being his entire body. The rest of the characters are still smooth looking but Edmond just becomes a blob for half a second

if they dropped the live action and most of the secondary animal characters that we follow most of this movie, it would have been a much stronger movie. yeah it would be a simple story still but having Chanteclair as the main character and still keep his backstory. together with Goldie and Grand Duke with only tiny changes to their characters and design, the story would have taken a darker turn for the better and still keep the Elvis-styled music. I wonder if this was the main story to Don before it was forcefully changed to be for smaller kids.

Rock-a-Doodle was going to be released by MGM-Pathe but the studio is having financial problems so Don Bluth rescheduled it and choose Samuel Goldwyn Pictures as the distributor as the movie got delayed until April 3,1992 to avoid competing with Beauty and The Beast and An American Tale 2: Fievel goes West which Bluth himself wasn't involved. I really hated the fact that the Owls wanted a bad storm because they hated Sunlight. Owls are Night Birds not Vampires as they needed the sun to sleep. This Movie has laid an egg.

Phil Harris as Patou, a Basset Hound who is a good friend to both Chanticleer and Edmond, and plays the narrator character of the story. He despises the Grand Duke and is dedicated to Edmond's cause to bring Chanticleer back home. He is brave and reasonable, but somewhat temperamental. His endeavour to find Chanticleer is hampered by the fact that he does not know how to tie his shoes (which he wears because of bunions). However, in the end, he finally figures out how to tie them right, after Edmond teaches him. This would be Harris's final acting role; he died four years after its release, aged 91.

In my opinion, the movie would have been better if all of Patou's narrations were removed and, in return, the opening animated segment was narrated by Edmond's mother. Also, I believe that the fighting cock (please, don't begin) sent by the Duke in the beginning should have had a bigger protagonism just like in the cancelled Chanticleer Disney movie.

I read somewhere that Don Bluth had to edit the film in order to maintain a G rating. It's a shame, there seems to be a good movie trapped within a bad one, boggled down by an unnecessary narration, an annoying child character, and magic that doesn't really add much. There are clips here on KZread with the narration edited out, and it's better.

Had Bluth been able to stick with his original script, it could have worked. Clearly, the film has a dual narrative - one story follows Chanticleer and his adventures in the entertainment industry, while the other follows Edmond and the other barnyard animals searching for Chanticleer. Goldcrest was the studio that produced this and All Dogs Go To Heaven. Unfortunately, the former film was a financial disappointment so they forced Bluth to focus on Edmond and the other animals on their search to find Chanticleer. Edmond's story obviously was the weaker of the two narratives. However, there are other story problems. It's never made explicitly clear whether or not Chanticleer actually causes the sun to rise or not. Also, the live action story doesn't connect very well with the animated one. Edmond isn't on some special quest for knowledge, to prove his courage, or to find some magical macguffin that will transport him home. He's really just there to help the other animals get Chanticleer back to make the sun rise again. However, as in all Bluth films, there is great character design, animation and voice acting. Chanticleer, Goldie and the magpie character are all visually stunning. Bluth was beginning to rip off himself with some of the characters. We get another Owl, mouse and cat. Personality wise, many of the barnyard characters evoke earlier Bluth ones. Chanticleer, Goldie and Sorrell Booke's fox are the most interesting personalities but their story takes a back seat to the rest.
