It was incredible how stable the structure of the tornado stayed. So many of the large, violent tornadoes are erratically structured fluctuating in size with sub-vortices twisting around everywhere (which is also cool to look at.) Great footage

What are the chances that a massive tornado happens to touch down in your area and the fact that you happen to live in wide open, unobstructed rural farmland allowing you to watch it pass by from a distance far enough to not be threatened by it. And even if it changed course and decided to barrel right your direction you'd still have plenty of time to get out of it's way. I mean this is the perfect spot!

Just for scale, the farm in the foreground is exactly halfway to the center of the tornado. The Twister is 1.6 miles away and the farm is 3/4ths of a mile away.

Life-saving tip: Don't go outside when there is a tornado. And if you're outside, just get away from it in general and seek shelter instead of staying outside. Optionally, keep low to the ground (not to sure about the last one, but I think it helps keep your ground).

I was actually near Rochelle when I was 6, we were going to one of my relatives houses there, and then the tornado warning started alerting us on the TV, then we stayed in the basement for about 45-50 minutes. It was a scary experience for me

@Drxm It depends, I think. I'm pretty sure that they do both damage and wind speeds. Though that could have been the older way of rating tornadoes.

@@drxm. My comment was referencing the assigned windspeed. It was an EF4 at 200 MPH. EF5's start at 201 mph. The EF scale uses both damage indicators AND windspeed. Tornados have been rated less due to debris doing the damage for instance. For this tornado, the damage was severe enough to warrant a 200 mph rating, so... maybe that clears up some questions you may have had about my comment or the rather confusing EF scale you might have had.

Nice video! I drove through there a week later. There was still debris laying by the road. I remember seeing the top 2 ft of a power pole with some things still attached laying by the road where there were no poles around. Can’t believe anything would have enough power to snap the end off like that unless it hit something else and then blew over there.

My husband’s car got dinged up pretty bad by the hail from that storm 😬. We had just moved from McHenry county to DeKalb so half of our garage was filled with boxes to be unpacked.

It’s odd that such a strong tornado is so beautiful. In most videos of tornadoes this strength they’re just messy blobs. Borderline ef5 and it’s this beautiful. Not many ef5s are this pretty.

I remember witnessing this on our way home to Wisconsin after working in Illinois all week. Watched it form and move across Rochelle and then the highway way. I have never seen the sky so black after it had passed

Clem Schulz. Very famous video. Sent his wife to their basement for her safety, but the brick chimney fell on her and killed her. Clem was healing from a leg injury and couldn't move. He was interviewed maybe 4-5 years ago and was alive and OK at that time.

Even with how bad it was...people were probably lucky that day. It just clipped Rochelle, it didn't hit the heart of the city. Rochelle is only 10,000 people, but it has a major railroad terminal there and a major railroad tourist attraction that is quite busy, especially that time of year. It was bad, but it could've been even worse when I look back on it.

Even with how bad it was...people were probably lucky that day. It just clipped Rochelle, it didn't hit the heart of the city. Rochelle is only 10,000 people, but it has a major railroad terminal there and a major railroad tourist attraction that is quite busy, especially that time of year. It was bad, but it could've been even worse when I look back on it.
