It won't cost 100k to build tho. James (xRobots) builds the BB8 unit and it's the exact same principle. The only difference is that this is rubber and is bigger for longer lasting range. So unless it comes mounted with guns i'm calling bullshit.

you could DIY a remote control only version quite easy as i see it it you need a signle motor spinning the outer schell for motion (forwards backwards), a low static counterweight, a go pro, the outer schell and a sideways moving counterweight for steering

from what i see. this thing uses the same style of movement as the sphero robots. which are actually quite simple in design. the sifference is that this is modified so it can have cameras

There was a late 1960's sci fi tv show called “The Prisoner” in which a prisoner was guarded by giant robot balloon like balls that acted as guards would capture the escaping prisoner. I know it sounds ridiculous, but this video reminds of that vintage show.

I could see this being very useful in search and rescue scenarios where tree cover could make searching by copter and drone very difficult.

If it was cheaper and extraordinarily durable, I'd use a small one as an exercise ball for an outdoor dog when I'm not home :)

The battleship movie wasn't a lie then....

Its such a simple and practical idea. Just make it bigger and faster and give it guns and its a kickass deployable sentry

the problem immediately understood is that batteries suck and this thing could only roll around for 30 min or so. For a quick little mission, that might be fine. But what you really want is a power source that will let it go for hours ... days.... Or, you want to be able to beam power too it using Tesla tech from the early 1900s.

Reactive Xenon ...agreed it's probably cool just to keep patrolling the grounds around base but it's surveillance is limited

Now 1. Make them the size of the tip of a pen 2. Invisibility cloaking 3. Wall and ceiling grip 4. Autonomous 5. Nanosolar 10x more effective than regular solar.

Change the (probably) plastic tires with galvanic cells and voila! you got yourself a never ending ever rolling surveillance monster.

Dunno about Mars, but something like this may work on Venus (thick and sturdy spherical shell for protecting the sensitive innards, moves by rolling).

There was a show in the 60s called “the prisoner” and if the prisoners escaped there was a huge ball that would roll and swim through anything, and drag you back to the prison.
