Initially, I thought Robot using Rex Splode's DNA was a oddly shortsighted / sociopathic move. But then I realized Monster wouldn't be attracted to a kid. So the only way to make her feel romantically comfortable would be if she could associate Robot's traits to an attractive adult. So he kinda had to steal Rex's face to make it work for Monster.

It is only shown in the comics, but basically, Rex's mom sold him to some scientists to experiment with him, and he got some bionic stuff on his arms that allow him to turn anything he wants into bombs. EDIT: Also, I find natural that Robot told them the truth, because he has been basically pretending to be a robot that does not understand social cues for a few decades: He literally does NOT know anything about social cues, he never had to learn because no one expected him to.

Yknow something I haven't thought about before? If Robot took Rex's DNA and made an exact clone, woooouldn't that mean he has his powers? Having read the comics Rex's powers are never really explained beyond what they can do, neither is his backstory, so I'm not sure if his powers are inherent to his body or given to him by some mad science crap or something.

you missed it then. I think it was during the Invincibles invasion but it's shown that Rex power come from special implants in his forearms, they're not natural.

I wished they would have showed more of what the alternate universe robot does with the body that he cloned that is not rex.

In the comics, Rex’s powers come from a surgery that planted a device in his arm that allowed him to charge items to have them explode

I don’t think he’s a sociopath, I think he was just desperate to be free of his prison.

I think Rex was mostly enjoying the feeling of reacting that way, lol, I don't blame him because he gets to lay some sick burns.

I’m with Rex here, I would be beyond creeped out if I were him

I haven't watched all of Invincible, so could someone fill me in, did he really set the Mauler twins free?

yes, but only so he could get a new body. As soon as his mind was transplanted in the new body he immediately tried to send them back to prison. Then the call to be on standby against Omni-man came and he had to leave, but he did tell the government where the Mauler twins were as they are seen getting arrested again by the invisible guards at the end.

Rex sucks, but it’s legitimately awful that Robot stole and used his DNA without his consent. It’s pretty messed up.
