In a weird way, this is perfect. The helmet falling off perfectly coincides with the robot "malfunctioning".

I think the sketch was supposed to be the robot resetting on a 1900 WC toilet

When conan does that high pitched laugh that's when you know he is truly laughing

I love conans instant comedic recognition that the sketch couldn't compare with the fail. "What's better than that?"lol

That's what I love about Conan, something wrong happens in the sketch and he can work with it which in turns makes it funnier than the original plan!

Given the new toilet he sits on, I guess the gag was that he now sits on a circa 1900 toilet. As the common fear was that non Y2K compliant machines would not be able to interpret the year 00 as 2000, but as 1900.

i always liked that Conan keeps everything he tapes.

If NBC was half as good at making shows as they were at policing youtube clips of 10+ year old clips, they'd be the best network on television. Instead of being NBC.

From the looks of things, the robot was simply going to switch to a circa 1900 era, pull chain toilet, as part of the joke that computers would misinterpret the "00" as being the year 1900.

I was 18 when this aired and watched it with my brother who was 20 at the time and I thought it was part of the sketch and my bro was laughing so hard and I was like "what? I don't get it.." and he said "the robot's head wasn't supposed to fall off" then I laughed but mostly I was laughing at Conan's laugh... good times.. when we couldn't DVR and if you missed the joke you never got a chance to rewind so you can get the joke... 😉 thank you to the person who uploaded this.. who would've known I'd watch it in 2020 on a smart phone in the palm of my hand while in middle of a pandemic 😝

So that's what Conan's real laugh sounds like.

Conan tends to puit his right hand on his stomach when he's losing it.

Jeez. Andy practically fell into the chair, he was laughing so hard.

In retrospect, they were lucky for this accident, because unless a Michael Corleone look-alike somehow figured into this, the robot simply switching to an old-time pull-chain toilet would not have been all that funny.

I actually remember watching this all them years ago. I laughed as hard as Conan did. Fun times, fun times.

I was playing Interstate '82 online with friends new year's eve when it hit 2000. Nothing happened of course, and in the chat I said. "Hey it's 2000 and we are still alive!"

Awww Im disillusioned now... :´( I really thought....... Oh my.. I have no more reason to live! Where's my kayak?!?

I guess the sketch would've gone with Robot using a 1900 toilet or "water closet" as they had set up.

You've got to hand it to Brian McCann for trying to go on with the skit--and for playing along with the screw-up.

This was awesome. I love goof ups! Especially when the people involved can roll with them so well like these three! And I gotta say, while Conan may have been quite horribly hunched over there, I don't begrudge him for doing that. That desk was horrible back then, and his chair didn't look too comfy either.

This is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. When you have a screw up like this, you have to show it.

would've been total impromptu genius if Brian yelled, "I can't go on with the sketch now?!? THERE'S NOOOOOO REASON TO LIIIIIIIVE!!!" "WHERE'S MY KAYAK?!?!?" runs staggered up the stands with costume still on.

On another note, the song going into commercial was pretty tight... nice, soft brassy sound.

I’m amazed at how funny and entertaining this “failed” sketch was when now, there’s talk show hosts that can spend thousands and thousands of dollars on games and sketches that aren’t even remotely entertaining.

+felicity4711 This was most likely recorded off of an old VHS tape, so you're hearing the VCR motor. That's my hypothesis anyway.
