    I worked with very similar ones (Kuka) but only fun I had with them was programming stupid movements on 8-16 of them and syncing them so that they "dance" a bit out of sync one to other so that there's no peaks in current draw. Had to have all of their axis move for 20+ hours before they got shipped to a factory anyway so why not try to create something interesting and fun.

    Everyone here complaining... sure robots like these shouldn't ever be used without a cage, that is, in a normal environment. But just like all other acts on stage, there should be an exception for performers. There are MANY acts which couldn't be done by following OSHA rules, and most of the time that's just fine, as it's a performance. As long as there are enough precautions, a good risk evaluation and planning, a dead man switch (like the uploader explained there was) and proper training and know how of the risks, this should be just fine. Nothing in life comes without risk, and you often hear the phrase "don't try this at home, we're trained professionals", so why not with robots. These robots are much more reliable than humans so in some ways they're safer than an assistant for example. The only thing this robot doesn't do is anticipate, but as long as a human (who can anticipate) is behind the dead man switch it should be ok.

  • @OneBiasedOpinion

    @OneBiasedOpinion

    Those of us who make detracting comments about this performance aren’t doing so maliciously. Obviously these people are trying to be as responsible as they can with the equipment while performing their stunts. It is pretty cool and tbh I’m a little jealous. ;) However, those of us who work with these machines are going to fuss a little purely out of reflex because we know how powerful they are and how innocent they look to someone who hasn’t worked extensively with one. It is truly awesome how fast, precise, and strong these machines are, but it’s equally terrifying how little the general public understands their potential and that is usually how people end up injured or killed: they severely underestimated the machine, overestimated their reflexes, and got in between it and its destination at the wrong time. Boom, your head/arm/leg/torso is now halfway across the room or inside a giant claw/tool and the rest of you is on the floor still trying to process what just happened. It is all fun and games until somebody inputs the wrong code and Johnny suddenly exits the stage through the nearest hard surface at several hundred mph in less than a second. And that is not an exaggeration. If anything, it would happen even faster than that. E-Stops and Deadman switches are great for damage control, but there will still be damage. Their main purpose is to stop the damage from accumulating past the 1 second mark, which is still usually far too slow to prevent severe injury or death.

    If people are getting smacked in the head by one of these things, then your workplace is likely doing several things very wrong with their handling. These machines can easily kill a person if improperly used, but if installed and operated properly, there should be 0 casualties or injuries as a result.

    Yeah. I’ve seen what one of these can do to the steel walls of a CNC machine when they freak out, and that was a tiny one moving extremely light parts. I don’t even want to think about the results of this beast deciding to go “full torque rapid movement” into the mat with someone on it. Not that it ever conceivably should if they programmed it properly, but if it did, no amount of safeties are going to catch it in time before someone is turned into a human pancake.
