This review was ten times better than the movie itself. And a lot more entertaining. I have actually met Fred Dekker in person and I asked him if his vision was at all harmed by the PG-13 rating or the low budget and he humbly said no. He even said to me personally that he takes most of the blame for it's failings. He's a really nice guy. I was so happy to meet him in person at a screening of The Monster Squad in Portland. OR. He even complimented me on my OCP hat. Good times. Much better times than the most recent time I had watching this movie that's for sure. Which is funny because I used to love this movie as a kid. In fact it is the film that got me hooked on RoboCop. I wasn't allowed to watch the first film or the sequel until years later when my parents thought I was old enough. So this was my first introduction to RoboCop. And I fell in love with the character ever since. I will always save a small place in my heart for this awful movie for doing so. But it's still a terrible film. And it's funny you said you wanted that RoboCop 3 toy...Because I actually got that toy when I was a kid and it's one of the few childhood toys I still have and it's proudly displayed on my DVD shelf. It's voice box still works and everything. It's honestly a really cool action figure. His eyes light up and everything.

It wasn't THAT bad. It wasn't what it should have been either but it wasn't terrible. A Robocop movie should never be Rated PG-13 tho. Also Peter Weller should have continued playing the character. The story could have been better but I've seen worse movies.

One of the lessons I wish producers would learn from Robocop 3 (as well as several other film franchises that were more adult oriented originally but found they also had gained popularity amongst kids) is that the appeal of the film to kids lies in the percieved "adult" nature of the movie. I remember as a young kid in the 90's watching Robocops 1 and 2 on video and loving them to death, but then being massively disappointed with Robocop 3, in a large part because it felt like it was made "for kids". Kids HATE being kids, and generally hate the idea of things marketed toward them (unless the intentions are well hidden). They want stuff meant for teenagers or even adults more often than not once they hit about the age of nine or ten. So toning down the violence of a film in order to "appeal to kids" does absolutely nothing to actually get kids in the theatre. Because especially if the reputation of the movie is violent or adult, it's likely that their parent wouldn't let them see even a toned down sequel (I know my mom threw a fit about me watching Robocop movies because she hated the violence in them), and if the kids actually end up seeing it, they get disappointed and spread negative word of mouth to other kids. This is why the whole "toning down for PG-13" rarely works (or at least one of numerous reasons). Making a PG-13 film *initially* might work to get more butts in seats, but if you're taking something that was popular as hard R, it'd have to be monumentally excellent to work as a PG-13 picture. Because one of the things people expect of sequels is for the tone to match (or improve upon) the original, and the rating is a huge tone shifter, and very rarely for the better.

I think the movie had a big problem with piracy as well, I saw a VHS copy from a car boot sale a good year before it came out in cinemas and I even remember news on the big breakfast saying that Robocop 4 had been pirated and it hasn't even finished filming yet. I assume Robocop 4 was actually that Canadian thing they did afterwards.

I always thought that Robocop 3 felt like a made for tv movie. I mean all the violence was gone & so was all the grit. The look of this film is just too polished for me, it looks cheap if you know what I mean? The enemies are just as bland as the story, you don't feel threatened by them in any way. It's almost like a spoof of the original movie but with added Ninjas & a jet pack lol. Just feels really out of place. I mean Robocop 2 was flawed but at least it still felt like the same franchise. I also remember the huge delay waiting to watch it in the UK, I honestly thought back then as a kid the film has been canned cos I remember reading things about it in magazines then nothing happened, then a year later it resurfaced again & the advertisement for it was little to none that I remember lol.

Robert Lee Gotta disagree with your disagreement; Miller has serious problems with tone and pacing, which isn't so obvious in most of his comics (shorter/episodic stories sidestep both issues) and considering how tight and balanced the first movie was he really was a bad pick to continue the series. It made sense in context so I can't really blame the producers for the decision to bring him in, but the overlap between Miller's skillset and what's needed for RoboCop to work is totally superficial.

Robocop suffered the same fate as the Frankenstein Monster. Writers/directors often run out of ideas for robotic-type creations/characters and they start spending more and more time lying on their backs waiting for someone to repair them. What kept the Universal Frankenstein films going was adding other monsters, like the Wolf Man and Dracula, to the mix.

If you think about it, the story of this trilogy actually had great progression from one movie to the next. Starting from the concept of Delta City to the eventual destruction of old Detroit to begin construction of the city. The problem was with the second and third movies not being at all consistent with the tone of the first(the second being close though). I also found it interesting that Dr Lazarus was supposed to be the female doctor who was with Bob Morton in the first movie that helped with Robocop's development. I actually think the third movie could have been as good or even better than the second one if the tone stayed more true to the first and got rid of all the childish elements

Monster Squad despite being silly, is in my opinion so perfectly paced and acted that I'm surprised the same director dropped the ball so severely on this one. One thing that both films have in common I feel is that they fail to target the right audience. This is genius for Monster Squad with it's violence and adult gags but a poor show for Robocop 3, which comes across as immature to say the least.

Great review! It's sad this movie was watered down purposely made for a PG-13 rating to bring in a younger audience (mental age is different for children) to just fill in the seats. It will be like making the "Lego Movie" sequel with a R rating by purposely adding gore, swearing, and violence in order to appeal to an older audience. The point is the studio was making a film (ex. sequel or reboot) which feels like it shouldn't belong and completely aimed at a curtain audience which it wasn't customly made for them in the first place.

His previous films were so much fun, and not afraid to shy away from splattery gore - so it's a shame RC3 turned out so be such a dud and killed his directing career. At the Q&A nobody mentioned or asked about Robo-Cop 3, which I thought was very polite. Although I wanted to know about his memories of the project, it was a relief that nobody brought it up!

I didn't mind Robocop 3. I actually liked it. The only thing that soured my enjoyment of the movie was the fact that Peter Weller didn't play Murphy/Robocop. After watching 1 and 2, Weller was the only one that who could have played - he was the character; it just wasn't the same without Weller. Overall, I thought all 3 Robocops together made a very good trilogy.

The links between the toys companies and movie studios during the 90's can explain why some sequels of interesting films like the first "Robocop" or Tim Burton's "Batman" were so... childish... Remember in those days they even sold you action figures of characters that they don't appear in the movie. Is nearly a miracle that today they exist other companies (like Hot Toys or Mc Farlanne) that are producing action figures oriented for mature audiences and that allow some adult elements on their figures and that allow the directors to concentrate on films for that could be rated R.

Burton's Batman was considered too dark when it first came out. It's only in retrospect it's seems childish. Remember before it, we had cheesy 60s Adam west Batman.

Just watched this one with my soon to be 11 year old son today. He really liked it, though he noted the voice sounding "soft" and the movements being slightly different. He also asked me in the second act if Niko was a boy. He said it's his second favorite, after Robocop. I didn't mind it at all. As an adult I just imagined it as a adaptation of a Frank Miller graphic novel.

Personally I feel they should do an animated series again. I know it's been done before, but it could save the franchise. An animated series could reintroduce Alex Murphy in more creative way while retaining the satire and dark humor of the live action movies. You can put it on Netflix or something. You can get away with a lot if it's animated and you can have Peter Weller return to voice Robocop, that would be awesome.

I remember watching this movie when I was a kid. They had a late night showing of it on opening weekend. The first 100 to 200 people received a free hamburger from Jack In The Box. And they gave you the burger at the door the burger showed up late so the movie started late. Everybody took the little dried up hamburgers in the movie theater and it was the biggest food fight you would ever see. People who dressed the nicest got it the worse.

I think how robo is rubbish against the Japanese robots is to show how antiquated his tech is and acknowledge how his human mind eventually outwitted the competition! I also believe that the third installment of the franchise more structured layers than your review gives credit for! Obviously it's the weakest chapter of the three but Murphy's moral structure remains intact throughout!

What's most annoying about Robocop 3, in my eyes...is how Robocop so cleverly took out RoboCain and Ed 209, only to look so confused as to what to do with the ninjas. But that film is just Robocop in name only.

people like continuity,in sequels an role reprisals, when Peter Weller decided not to reprise the role then they should have made it possible, thru production delays, pay negotiations, what ever it took to get Weller on board with the film,u cant do two sequels with the same actor then try for a trilogy with a different actor that never works that's a guaranteed failure

I still like this film. It feels like the true sucessor to the first film, story-wise. The lack of extreme violence honestly doesn't bother me. Basil Pouledouris' revised, polished and expanded score is also excellent and I agree it's the best thing about the film.

I saw this online yesterday, just because I recently saw Robocop and Robocop 2, and man did it stink. But it's sill with all the people complaining about the pg-13 rating. It doesn't matter what the rating is. It matters that this movie sucks, and doesn't have a single compelling scene. The whole movie suffered from an overall made for tv blandness and silly cheesiness.

I actually appreciate 3 as it does conclude the narrative set up in Robocop 1 . It’s just less gore and brighter colors ..some rehashing of things established in previous films but it was written by legendary comic writer Frank Miller so there is cohesion and genuine attempt to tell a good story .

as a superfan of all that is Robocop, i'd like to inform you that in the beginning of R3, after murphy was set on fire by the splatters, "the heat was so hot his skin and vocal cords burned", so they had to rebuild those parts, a kindof kayfabe explanation, meaning atleast they tried to explain why robo looks different.
