Oh totally!!! For some reason (probably too much "peach tea" at that point), it sounds like I say "Tom" DeLuise in the video, but rest assured I am familiar with The Great Dom. I even saw him in a movie I don't think ANYONE saw, "Haunted Honeymoon" with Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner.

As much as this film cracks me up, Alan Rickman will always be my favorite Sheriff of Rottingham. This film is a direct parody of Prince of Thieves, so it might be worth checking out on your own. It'll definitely clear up why Sir Patrick Stewart had such a thick accent in this.

Tracey Ullman had her own comedy show in late 80's for 3 or 4 years . On her show was a short little cartoon called The Simpsons. That is where they started. The Simpsons is consider a spin off.

Nice! I was going to share the same tidbit...I love Tracey...very talented woman. Her more recent british show was hilarious..well maybe not super recent but around 2018ish. I love all the accents and personas she is able to do.😊

@@DavidvsFilm Funny thing to note. She hated The Simpsons. Mostly because those segments quickly became the most popular part of her show, and she had nothing to do with it. She's said in recent years that she "nurtured the simpsons like it was my baby, i loved it so much." but literally all the writers and castmembers of The Simpsons have said that she hated it, hated them, and tried to get their skits removed from her show all the time. I think she's absolutely hilarious, especially in this movie. But it's important to note that The Simpsons didn't become popular because of Tracey Ullman, rather it became popular in-spite of her. She actively tried to kill it, but failed.

Tracy Ullman also had a brief singing career. Had one hit song, “They Don’t Know About Us”. She had a very good singing voice. You should look up her video. Major celebrity cameo. You’ll like it.

While I agree that it's a parody of RH:PoT, half the film almost directly parodies the OTHER most famous RH film, which is 1938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood" starring Erroll Flynn, Olivia DeHaviland, Basil Rathbone as Guy of Gisbourne (THE big bad in that movie; the sheriff was more of a bumbling idiot, something which got flipped in Costner's movie) and Claude Rains as Prince John. The very fact that this movie HAS a Prince John is the biggest clue that they are parodying Flynn's movie, since PoT cuts that character out of the story. Also the costumes in this movie are much more reminiscent of the Flynn film; RH: PoT deliberately steered away from having the characters in tights. Also, the archery contest in this one is a nod to the Flynn film since Costner's did not include the archery contest story. If you have never seen the 1938 Flynn version of Robin Hood, I highly recommend it. Yes, compared to today's acting it's cheesy and over the top, but it's a film classic still and it's the one that set the stage for future Robin Hood characterizations to come, including Disney's animated version, which is why Brooks referenced it in this movie. He would have grown up on that one back when it was all the rage and was the viral sensation of his day.

Wow for some reason I was surprised that you recognized the Sheriff of Rottingham from Cheers. I guess I’m used to a lot of young reactors that don’t know what Cheers is. He was amazing in this to have to memorize his script with the words all out of order. The scene where Robin shoots the arrow at Will Scarlet always makes me wonder what happened to the arrowhead. It’s clear he was able to chop up the wood. 15:22 we go from Winston Churchill to Malcolm X. 17:36 love the circumcision part with Blinkin raising his hand to ask a question. 19:56 that’s because Mel Brooks wrote or co-wrote most of the songs in this movie. 23:33 I love their comment about getting out the ladies clothes and back into their tights. 23:42 yes it is the same hangman. 23:58 that’s about the Abbott and Costello comedy duo. Love how you guys got most of the jokes in the movie. Mel Brooks is an amazing writer. He did a remake of Blazing Saddles recently. It’s called Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank.

I think this is my favorite comedy. I don't like rewatching most movies, but this one I can watch over and over and still enjoy.

I feel like I'd need to have a Carey Elwes marathon- where he begins in Princess Bride as a young Westley, who then moves to Sherwood Forest and changes his name following a tragic breakup with Buttercup, only to eventually relocate to the US where he meets his demise as a storm chaser ;)

Not sure if anyone covered it in the comments. But something that's a more obscure reference in the film, depending on ones age, is the archery contest Robin used the patriot arrow, which is a nod and reference at the time to the first Gulf War where Iraq invaded Kuwait for oil. America had a missile called the patriot missile, which was guided by computers to some extent, I don't know exact logisticcs of the patriot missile, but that's what the arrow was paying homage to, but if you knew nothing about the first gulf war, it's a reference most people would not pick up on.

Did you look at the cast for Mel Brooks production of "The Producers"? 2005 was Nathan Lane and Matthew Brodderick. Amazing! But same move from 1968, Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder!!! Both a must watch. You both will love the acting. And so much fun seeing the difference in the two versions.

I changed the name of my John to Jim because it sounds so much better to say, "I'm going to the Jim." If you ever get the chance you should watch the 1938 version of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn as Robin Hood and Olivia DeHavilland as Maid Marion. It is in color and it's a very fun film to watch. You've probably seen a scene from it in a Bugs Bunny cartoon where Robin is standing on a tree limb saying "Welcome to Sherwood." It was in the 1949 Merrie Melodies cartoon "Rabbit Hood."

Another childhood classic! Not really a kids' movie though... but that's the nineties for you, kids getting to do and see things they don't these days, like riding a bike without a helmet, gasp. I've seen this so many times but not in like 25 years... Still funny.

This still has me gasping for air anytime I see it , even after all these years since its release. Latrine is played by Tracy Ullman a British Comic who is PHENOMENAL, and that's an understatement. a Very Longggg Resume. She's really Funny and Creative . She had a TV Comedy /Sketch show on Fox with a cast of Equally talented comics in the late 80s. In between Skits/Scenes they would play an animated Short about a family named The Simpsons.... The voices of the family are still voiced by the original actors who were Co-stars of Tracy Ullman's TV Show .

There are a lot of telegraphed jokes and low hanging fruit in this movie, but it still has some funny moments. “HEY ABBOT!” “I HATE THAT GUY!” is my favorite. You guys will enjoy Young Frankenstein. It was made/released around the same time as Blazing Saddles and are Brooks’ funniest films, IMO. It’s more subdued than BS, but that subtlety emphasizes the comedy.

We don’t have a lot of Mel Brooks under our belts to compare it to, but this one seemed to have a lot more “of the moment” jokes than I remember from Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs. Unless I’m just forgetting from those. It definitely felt 90s lol. I can’t wait for Young Frankenstein.

It's funny you recognise Cary Elwes as the bad guy from twister. Does this mean you've yet to watch The Princess Bride, Liar Liar, and Saw? (I know he's done many other projects, but those are the three i see mentioned most. Fourth would be his role as Pierre Despereaux in Psych. Which is phenomenal.)

Cary Elwes was also Matthew Broderick’s lieutenant in Glory. But another interesting role for him was in The Crush opposite a very young Alicia Silverstone.

"As my first order of business, I would like to appoint a new Sheriff... my friend Ahchoo." "A black sheriff?" "He's black?" "And why not? It worked in Blazing Saddles (1974)." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of comedic genius Dave Chappelle. What Script Fact; The scene where the Sheriff (Roger Rees) falls through the roof of Latrine's (Tracey Ullman) room and she tries to get him to have sex with her was completely improvised. Deep Cut Fact: When the newly recruited Merry Men are getting outfitted with clothing and weapons, their tights are taken out of giant plastic eggs. This is a reference to L'eggs pantyhose, which used to be sold in plastic egg packages. Traveling Gag Fact: Throughout the movie, a mole on the face of Prince John (Richard Lewis) changes position. It starts on his left cheek, then his chin, his lip, his right cheek, and finally his forehead. This is a nod to the famous "I-Gor's Hump" gag from Young Frankenstein (1974). Hollywood Accents Fact: The gag about Robin (Cary Elwes) being able to speak with an English accent is a reference to Kevin Costner's performance in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991). Sir Patrick Stewart plays King Richard talking in a thick Scottish accent, a reference to Sir Sean Connery's performance in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991). Some critics found Connery's accent inappropriate for the role, since King Richard would not have spoken with a Scottish burr (thus providing comedic fodder for Mel Brooks).

Btw, if you look at the credits, you'll see someone named Evan Chandler. That was the father of the boy that accused Michael Jackson during that time, this movie was his idea cause the son called Robin Hood "the men in tights". He had a car-rental service that was called the same thing that is on the back of the horse: "Rent a wreck"

I love this movie. This one and Young Frankenstein are my favorite Mel Brooks movies. For Robin Hood movies it's The Adventures of Robin Hood, Men In Tights and then Disney Robin Hood.

Everyone should have told you to watch the Prince of Thieves before getting into it. While there's a lot of things parodied in this film, you missed out on a lot by not knowing the references to things. But this happens with many reactions I've seen to this movie. The group, Will, Achoo, and Blinkin are directly from PoT. The witch as well. Little John freaking out in the water.... So much! I of courae still loved your reaction, I just recently found you and trying to watch so many things. I haven't seen if you've done PoT yet, but if you haven't, you should. I know a lot of people gu e it a lot of crap, but it is one of my top Robin Hood stories, though Alan Rickman probably is a big part

The camera crashing thru the window isn't random. The previous shot was the camera moving in towards the window. It just didn't stop.

@@DavidvsFilm It's actually a British TV series from 1984, with music by Clannad and their fabulous mystic intro. I watched it as a child and was madly in love with Robin... 😉

It's weird to see people react to the parody movies when they haven't seen the movie that its parodying. I'm glad you could still enjoy it though. You really need to watch Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and then rewatch this to get the full enjoyment though.

Thanks Stephanie! Yeah, I felt like there were things we were supposed to be connecting that didn't because of not having seen Prince of Thieves. That said, you are correct in that we still loved it. One thing that I noticed from the Disney cartoon was the disguise at the archery contest- that seemed to be a nod to that, unless Kevin Costner also dressed like Mark Twain lol

It was so nice watching some people slightly older than the usual movie reactors watching this one, because unlike them you got all of the '90s jokes! It would have helped if you'd seen Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (the Costner movie), since this movie is basically a spoof of that one, but still. So many reactors are just clueless about half of the jokes in this one.

Now you have to watch Bram Stoker's Dracula from 1992. And then watch Dracula: Dead and Loving It. Another Mel Brooks masterpiece.

If you haven’t already seen Mel Brooks’ movie “ High Anxiety” then you would enjoy it. It’s Mel’s parody of Alfred Hitchcock movies. Mel plays the starring role and Madeline Kahn, Harvey Korman, Clovis Leachman as well as Dick Van Patten also round out an excellent cast.

Young Frankenstein will definitely be on the list during spooky season this year ;) And High Anxiety I had never heard of until people mentioned it in the Blazing Saddles comments. As a Hitchcock lover, that one sounds right up my alley.

Watch Robin Hood with Errol Flynn from 1938. There are a lot of scenes that Mel Brooks parodies here. And it's a really entertaining movie!

Absolutely! Prince of Thieves is a 90s classic. One of those much praised movies like Gladiator or Braveheart that now usually seem cheesy but everyone loved at the time. Overly dramatic. Bryan Adams singing the theme song. It’s great 😂

Loved this movie especially since I shamelessly love Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. But I would be remiss if I didn’t correct you…it was the much missed Bill Paxton in Twister (and the equally loved Bill Pullman in Spaceballs). You have to watch The Princess Bride. It’s Cary Elwes’s most iconic role.

Starring Ron (Fagin from the musical flick, “Oliver!”) Moody, “Frank Langella”, Dom Deluise, & Mel Brooks as “Tikon”! (TBH… It’s my absolute favorite flick from Mel Brooks! It’s an earlier directorial effort from Brooks (Like, “The Producers”, which you should also watch!), & maybe ‘cause its not-so-wacky, & TBH… Even getting some dramatic moments, which I absolutely love about this flick, still… There’s just a good mix of humor/drama/silliness (Special thanks to Dom Deluise!😉) & a gorgeous score… Will always make it my personal favorite Brooksflick! I remember Lloyd Bridges getting off a plane and a guy says, "How are 'ya?" to which he responds, "Hawaii?? Goddammit Bill, I'm supposed to be in California." And then also Charlie Sheen passing Martin Sheen on a boat or something and said "Loved you in Wall Street". That's literally all I remember off-hand, so definitely in need of a revisit.

Cary Elwes is not the bad guy from twister good sir! He is the good guy from Princess bride!

What? He did ask Connery, but the latter demands were too high. Connery wanted to do King Richard but while doing it also dress in drag (had to much fun earlier wearing body thong in movie Zardoz) and secondly receive one million dollars. The paycheck was too high for Mel!

Just a heads up about Mel Brooks movies: avoid "To Be or Not To Be", a very unsuccessful remake of the original film (1942 war/comedy) that stars Jack Benny and Carole Lombard. The original is a film I highly recommend that you watch. It deals with a troop of Jewish actors trying to flee Poland after the Nazi invasion. "How can that be a comedy?" you may well ask. Well, it is, and it is an excellent film.

@@DavidvsFilm you’re welcome! i love that film for various reasons, but kevin costner as robin got a lot of criticism, mostly bc he could NOT master the english accent (which is why cary elwes has the line referencing his own accent in men in tights). seriously his accent is a MESS, be prepared 😂 otherwise it’s really great - morgan freeman, alan rickman, christian slater.

Hey guys, I saw this in cinema when it was released and laughed my ass off, and it's still one of my favorite comedies period! I have some points for you, hope you find them interesting: 1. The movie is in general a spoof of the very succesful "Robin Hood - King of thieves" with Kevin Costner as Robin which was released shortly before. The movie is legendary for Costner's fake accent 😉 2. The scene where Robin meets Achoo the first time is a reference to the incident that caused the L.A. riots in 1992 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1992_Los_Angeles_riots). 4 police officers beated and arrested a black man, which was recorded on video and broadcasted on the news. 3. The screaming kid is is a reference to "Home Alone". 4. Yes, "White Men Can't Jump" is a movie of the early 90s feat. Wesley Snipes. 5. Will Scarlett "O' Hara" is a reference to "Gone With The Wind", where Scarett O'Hara is on of the main characters. 6. Achoo was impersonating Malcom X with his speech. The movie by director Spike Lee was released the year before. 7. The "Patriot" arrow is a reference to the anti-aircraft-missile used by the US army in the Gulf War 1991. 8. Yes, it is Sir Patrick Stewart 😉 And "It's good to be the king" is a quote from another Mel Brooks movie, "History of the world: part one". Have a good one!
