He broke Bob Gibson's leg with a line drive, took a piece of Don Drysdale's ear off with a line drive (Drysdale then retired), Sandy Koufax said the hardest ball anyone ever hit off of him was a home run Clemente hit to right field in 61' at Dodger Stadium. He said the only reason it didn't go out of the park was that it hit a light stanchion on the way up. He also said the dumbest thing the Dodgers ever did was leave him unprotected. Koufax said that cost us 2 to 3 WS championships. He said we didn't hit but had all the pitching in the world. With him in the line up, no way we lose. Larry Bowa said he never saw anyone hit more line drives in all his years in baseball. Oh, he is one of only about 2 or 3 guys to almost hit the scoreboard at Wrigley. It was a line shot that went out at the bottom left hand corner and missed the scoreboard by about 10 feet. WGN used to play the replay of that every now and then.

This Legend Clemente and his Pirates beat the Yankees for the Championship. The Yankees had 5 Hall of Famers (Stengal,Mantel, Berra, Maris, and Ford). Pirates only had 2 Hall of Famers Clemente and Maz. This is why Clemente is considered the great one. Not only being the best right fielder but THE best player of all time. If he didn't die young his stats would have even been more impressive. Willie Mays even said Clemente is the best ball player he ever saw next to himself.

The best part of that vignette is Davey Johnson of Baltimore, standing behind the plate to signal slide or stand to their runner, looking back out at Clemente after the throw is secured by Sanguillen.

Clemente was great in the series, but Earl Weaver said at the time that Steve Blass should have been MVP. Blass pitched and won 2 complete games with an era of 1.00, against an Orioles team (3 HOF's by my count) that won 109 in the season with 4, 20-game winners. That's damn impressive. Clemente received the MVP, and good for him, but Blass should of at least have been co-MVP.

Steve Blass won those games because Clemente hit cleanly in all 7 games of that series. No Clemente, no victory!

@@jorgevelasco9787 No. Steve Blass won those games because he gave up a total of 2 runs in 2 complete game victories - including game 7 - against a heavily favored Orioles team. Clemente played well, but who was most responsible for the Pirates winning the Series? Blass. Earl Weaver said himself that without Blass winning those 2 games, Pirates don't win, and he's right.
