Roberto Clemente's Final Interview, October 1972
Ойын-сауық
Roberto Clemente sits down with WPXI [then-WIIC]'s Sam Nover in October 1972, less than 3 months before his untimely passing. This is definitely his final at-length interview, and probably his only surviving extended interview that was captured visually. This was re-run by WPXI for the first time in 1989, and again on New Year's Eve 1997 [marking the 25th anniversary of his death], which is the source of this upload. I'm not sure if it's been shown again since then. In its original rerun, Sam Nover apologizes for the video quality, and John Fedko does the same in 1997, so I feel no obligation to do so in 2018!
UPDATE: It was announced today [12-4-18] that Sam Nover, who conducted this interview with Roberto, has died at the age of 77. RIP to a Pittsburgh broadcasting legend.

I am tempted to say “what a tragedy”, that we lost this man so soon, but the reality may be that he accomplished exactly what he came on earth to do! I am grateful for Roberto Clemente Sr.

@@stevea6816 that's not for you, me OR Roberto to decide. I'm also grateful for the existence of Roberto though I never saw him play. But he opened so many doors for Puerto Rican baseball players and I cannot/will not, ignore my heritage - as American as I am (even though Puerto Rican's ARE born American citizens). I hear what you're saying. Such a great man, so intelligent and thoughtful - and ultimately to selfless for his own good. It seems pretty obvious to me that he was needed elsewhere. Sleep in peace Roberto - you are missed here more than you know.

My favorite player and in my eyes the best baseball player of my lifetime, treated poorly and discriminated against by the press at times causing him to retreat from the press causing even more problems from the press. A proud man who did not like being called "Bobby" by some announcers and others, always corrected folks that his name was Roberto. He was just a thrill for me to watch with regards to all aspects of the game. Big reason for the 1971 World Series win and utterly devastated me when he passed to the point baseball was no longer that important to me. Just loved seeing him play, no one quite like him and will never be again. Just my two cents!!!!
Only one 👊🏽🇵🇷number 21 legend..Roberto Clemente lives forever
