Robert W. Service interview (recalling Yukon) Monaco, 1958
In May 1958, Pierre Berton interviewed Robert W. Service at his home Monaco, bv d'Italie for the documentary series 'Close-up' for CBC Canada.
Pierre Berton was not just a journalist but a real Yukoner who grew up just in front of Robert's cabin in Dawson.
In this extract, Robert W. Service explains why he left Scotland for Canada, then what inspired him to write the famous rimes of The Shooting of Dan McGrew in Whitehorse.
As often described, Robert W. Service's tone was a mix of an English inflection, an American drawl and Scottish overtones.

It's lovely to hear his Scottish twang coming through despite leaving Scotland so many years ago. Thank you for posting.
Robert Service's ballads were a big part of my family when I was growing up in Alaska in the 1960's. We'd read them to each other so many times around the campfires, or inside next to a crackling fireplace, that we could retell them by memory. I've read thousands of books in my decades, and Robert Service is still in my top five favorites, maybe even top three.

@@jcam42 I'm glad to hear it! I've been a Robert Service fan ever since my Uncle gave my Dad a book of his poems in 1967.....I was only 1 year old, but I remember Dad reading them at the kitchen table. Mom didn't like the more gruesome ones, and I thought it was funny!

Just finished reading Berton's book "Prisoners of the North". The chapter "Bard of the North" ends with this interview. I wondered ummm ... could it be found in today's KZread world. Well, yes, and thank you for uploading!
Great writer and poet. Anyone been up North can relate. Smart man to retire in warm Monaco. No idiot here.
For reference, this man was 30 in 1904. Amazing interview.
People suggest many of his poems … please don’t forget “Jean Desprez” “Oh ye whose hearts are resonant, and ring to War's romance, Hear ye the story of a boy, a peasant boy of France; A lad uncouth and warped with toil, yet who, when trial came, Could feel within his soul upleap and soar the sacred flame; Could stand upright, and scorn and smite, as only heroes may: Oh, harken! Let me try to tell the tale of Jean Desprez.” Read on !!!!!
Would love to see the entire interview. Thank you for uploading.
Thanks for uploading, this is fascinating. I read an excerpt from The Shooting of Dan McGrew at my Grandfathers funeral last week. He had a quite a few of Mr Service's works and Dan McGrew and Sam Mcgee were his favourites.
My Mom knew one of his family as I guess several of them followed him over, one of his cousins was an RCMP officer in our town (before my time mind you). There is also a story that his ghost appeared where he worked in Victoria, BC as a bank clerk shortly after he passed away looking out of a second story window where his old apartment used to be.
My father used to read us poems by Mr. Service at times when we had a fire or went camping and we were all just so wrapped up in he telling of the story poems. Good times.

Just finished Ploughman of the Moon. His autobiography. What a story! What a life!
Something very familiar in his poetry,.the way the scenes and rmotions are knitted snd flow. He's obviously got the scottish burr fromiving there. But he was a Lancashire Lad, his parents were too. It kind of sense why hus poetry felt so familiar when I found thst out.
Brilliant man
My favourite I’ve memorized Dam Mcgrew

It is a great chance that he recorded this interview few months before his death, it is a unique testimony and moving to see and listen to him.
My actual grand fathers uncle. He was named after him except his middle name . My grand father Scott’s raised and North America bound. These men lived intriguing lives.

Do you suppose the Robert Service is related to Peter Service? Peter Service is one of the 19 original founders of Seneca County upstate N.Y. finger lakes region. My Mother's family (Scottish) is related to Peter Service, just curious.
My all time favorite poet. He went to war, but he didn't let it get him down like Hemingway. Hemingway doesn't hold a candle to this man
