He goes from anger, to self-loathing, back to anger, to grief, and then to resolve. In the span of about 30 seconds. Amazing. It's a crime he wasn't nominated for an oscar.

He was so great as Robert the Bruce, great acting, just perfect. Unfortunately most of the emphasis of the movie is on Mel Gibson as William Wallace. In the movie William Wallace(spoiler alert) dies in the end, but he has had a great influence on Bruce and others. Similarly, in the movie El-Cid, the Charlton Heston character is a knight who gradually prepares a young man to eventually become king, fighting and eventually dying but in the process teaching the young prince how to be a king.

Yes! I think this is what so many films are missing these days. Yes, Braveheart isn't historically accurate but that doesn't take away from the emotions the film give you. Modern movies are missing this sense of honor and commitment in our heroes. Everything needs to be so morally grey and dingy. I miss the days of real gallant heroes. Men and women who gave their lives for God and Country, who inspired the audience to aspire to something greater even if it's only for the runtime of the film.

Of all the scenes in this film, THIS is the one I remember in its entirety. It touched my soul & I felt as he has SO many times....saying the same words. I know this is a historical drama so we’ll never know exactly what Robert the Bruce actually felt or said in life, but it’s likely he went through much more in his life than the majority of us.

Leper: I'm the one who's rotting but I think your face looks graver than mine. Son, we must have alliance with England to prevail here. You achieved that. You saved your family, increased your land. In time, you will have all the power in Scotland. Robert: Lands, titles, men, power, nothing. Leper: Nothing? Robert: I have nothing. Men fight for me, because if they do not, I throw them off my land and I starve their wives and their children. Those men who bled the ground red at Falkirk, they fought for William Wallace, and he fights for something that I've never had. And I took it from him when I betrayed him and I saw it in his face on the battlefield, and it's tearing me apart. Leper: Well, all men betray. All lose heart. Robert: I don't want to lose heart. I want to believe as he does. I will never be on the wrong side again.

I recently learned that some of the people we point to as patriotically Scottish were from foreign family's. Robert the Bruce's family were originally called De Bruc and changed their name to sound more native. The Guy he killed in Arbroath Abby was also Norman French and the guy the English king picked to rule Scotland was also Norman French. Even the Wallace family came North with the founder of Paisley Abby from Shropshire but also Norman French. Puts a different perspective on the Auld alliance with France for me. I need to research this more to hopefully find out this is wrong because it puts a spanner in the patriotic fervor i have for my country.
