Robert Pattinson & Robert Eggers On The WTF Weirdness of ‘The Lighthouse’ | Rotten Tomatoes

Фильм және анимация

An almost undefinable mix of horror, fantasy, drama, and claustrophobic comedy, ‘The Lighthouse’ is leaving audiences thrilled, shocked, and a little confused in its wake. “What’s it all about?” To answer that question, we sat down with star Robert Pattinson and director and co-writer Robert Eggers to ask what’s going on in this tale of the crusty Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) and the mysterious Ephraim Winslow (Pattinson), who are together charged with running a New England lighthouse when a mammoth storm hits and some serious cabin fever sets in. That sense of weirdness, of the unexplained, is partly the point of the film, the pair explains. Plus, Pattinson reveals how he tried to shock co-star Dafoe in some of their intense brawling scenes and shares why he took on the challenging role, while Eggers talks about the joy of working with two actors who are “game for anything” and why he’s stretching the definitions of genres.

Upon reflection it brought to mind Twilight Zone episodes like "A Nice Place to Visit" and "Judgment Night", with Nehemiah Persoff, as the u-boat captain in his own private hell, finding himself eternally on the ship he torpedoed. Toss in the Promethean/Protean aspects, add the mystery of if either or both is just plain nuts, and it's a heady mix alright

@@luizspindola Fuel can be for a generator. Electric light is much brighter and more constant in intensity. Lighthouses are for the safety of people, and with high-value goods and on-time delivery contracts they were commercially highly important, and also for military vessels. Before radar, people would make sure they were state of the art. That's also why they were highly regulated, just as flight towers today.

@@luizspindola Most likely the fuel was for a generator, though. Electric light is brighter and more constant, and for safety reasons lighthouses had to be state of the art, pretty much like airport towers nowadays. Before cargo planes and radar, lighthouses bore even higher commercial and military relevance. So the funding for new technology must have been available, at least on important routes. It's also the reason why lighthouse regulations were as strict as portrayed in the movie. They were just hard to enforce with no one else around but the lighthouse keepers most of the time.

I think Patterson, despite clearly disdaining twilight, has said that the money he got from acting in those films actually allowed him to be more selective and particular with his acting choices in films that would probably not be enough to earn a living on alone.

Cinematic art, beautiful script, amazing actors and beautifully stunning! Reminds me of the beautiful black and white movies from the 20’s-40’s with that Hitchcockian or even E. A. Poe-esque story with all those amazing layers upon layers of story that you have to watch it again and again because once isn’t enough to take it all in. So beautiful and I absolutely loved this film. Pure perfect artistry!

Robert Pattinson was smart to play in a bunch of indie films to reinvent himself from his Twilight days. Now he definitely proved himself to be a really good actor. glad he didn't end up like Taylor Lautner.

Hark Triton, hark! Bellow, bid our father the Sea King rise from the depths full foul in his fury! Black waves teeming with salt foam to smother this young mouth with pungent slime, to choke ye, engorging your organs til' ye turn blue and bloated with bilge and brine and can scream no more - only when he, crowned in cockle shells with slitherin' tentacle tail and steaming beard take up his fell be-finned arm, his coral-tine trident screeches banshee-like in the tempest and plunges right through yer gullet, bursting ye - a bulging bladder no more, but a blasted bloody film now and nothing for the harpies and the souls of dead sailors to peck and claw and feed upon only to be lapped up and swallowed by the infinite waters of the Dread Emperor himself - forgotten to any man, to any time, forgotten to any god or devil, forgotten even to the sea, for any stuff for part of Winslow, even any scantling of your soul is Winslow no more, but is now itself the sea!

I'm sure he didn't make a ton of money for this movie. But hopefully people will see he is more than a sparkly vampire.

My favorite scenes of the movie were in fact where winslow screams after the masturbation and in the end when he reaches the light. I'm glad they didn't went very deep on the question what the film is all about, because imo there is a lot of symbolism shown not only in the arguably real and sane scenes but also in the very obviously hallucinated parts of the film. Not only is it a choice of the filmmaker to confuse the viewer with the ongoing insanity of the wickies, I think the film also lays enough clues for the viewer to figure out what happened himself, or at least come up with some theories.

And some memorable disturbing scene images. The biggest one when he is lying on the beach naked being eaten alive by Seagulls.
