Robert Jordan's comment about Rand touched me deeply; I've felt that. I feel that. Also, I got lost in how meaningful his personal experience growing up was in his development of Perrin. I hope you enjoy these insights from Jordan, himself. -Matt, Innkeeper

Damn, I'm not one to shed tears too often but that comment on Rand instantly put me right on the verge. It's always incredible to see that someone we all consider a hero and a legend was really just a person like us with the same insecurities.

I just finished Memory of Light. Even though I'm a terribly slow and meticulous reader, I'm proud to say I started December of 2019 and finished in 9 months. I'm so glad I had this experience. It was a beautiful journey. Unfortunately I didn't much enjoy the destination, as a memory of Light is by far my least favorite book but the experience has verified for me what we all learn growing up; it's all about the journey. For me especially, the first 12 books where the most fun I've had (Towers of midnight was just ok). I laughed until my body folded in two and I couldn't move, I cried, I challenged my sociopolitical assumptions and grew as a person. For that, there aren't enough words to express my appreciation for Robert Jordan.

I can definitely identify with being the outsider as well but what really engaged me with the series was the group. Not the “buddy” aspect, but the fact that RJ showed us how each of the Emond’s Fielders in some way felt alone and inadequate while still being a part of a group which clung together in a very trying time. Outside of family, the times that I have been part of a close group have been rare and I enjoy experiencing it vicariously in the books. I think that part of the reason that Rand and Egwene draw hate from more fans and Perrin seems to draw love from more fans is the way that they react when the group is split up.Rand and Egwene are placed under immense pressure and they suppress their feelings for those they love for the greater good while to Perrin, love conquers every other desire. He was willing to give up his life to the Whitecloaks to save Emond’s Field and he was willing to give up the world to rescue Faile when she was captured by Shaido. Mat is Mat, from almost the beginning to the end he claims that he is going to look out for Mat first but his actions prove that he is willing to risk all for those he cares about. Moaning and bitching the whole time of course!

Thanks for sharing this. I really enjoyed hearing his voice and learning a little about his life growing up. No person's passing who I had not known in person ever affected me as much as Robert Jordan. He put so much of himself in his books, so much of his inner thoughts and dreams, and I spent to much time immersed in that world over the years. Even though I'd never met him, and didn't even know that much about his biography other than the book blurb, I felt a real connection. He was a really special person and I'm grateful we had the chance to get to know him through his work.

I’ve read the series 4-5 times now and love it. Got a wall and a half of weapons I’ve customized and other stuff from the books. Turned out sweet. Got 6 others to read series now.

Absolutely felt his words on Rand to my core. These books, as I grew up, really changed how I felt about the world, people and, most importantly, myself. I think I came of age very much connecting with Rand for an unexplainable reason which I honestly couldn't really grasp. Hearing these words...I think I get it now. I've always felt as RJ did as well as Rand. I'm an outsider, constantly fighting a war within myself, desperately trying to cope with that fact, and yet never knowing how to express that side of myself. These books and their characters have given me an outlet and I'm eternally grateful to RJ for that. Thank You, RJ. Thanks, Matt for that extraordinary clip as well. Light illumine you both.

Art Anastacio - Thanks, Art! I can’t listen to this enough. I remember being his “guard” between two panels at this DragonCon. He was a quiet giant of a man to me as a fan. To hear how deep his considerations ran with these characters, and how little pieces of him stretch throughout the narrative, makes having fallen in love with these stories even more meaningful to me. I’m sure at the time this answer was less important to me than ones I asked for answers I cared about, but this is now one of my favorite answers he’s ever given.

Man, this was one of the first series I truly ever got into. I was really into Harry Potter too. But this series just hooked me. This time I'm giving it a listen through audio format. And wow I was so bad with pronunciation. Cuendillar was "coo-en-dill-AR" to me.
