I was really hoping Misdirected would be in this show!

His best tone by far was when he played these Fender signature models. Every time I hear these old videos with him playing one, it blows me away!

Robben was so on top of his game at this point in his career! I personally think The Blue Line was his best ever lineup and truly brought out the very best in all the players. This is a video I’ve watched many times over the years and it really shows his total mastery of the guitar and fantastic use of jazz chords in a blues setting!

This whole band was so ON that night. This is probably the best I've ever heard Robben play. I've seen him live, this show was tops. Roscoe and Tom were incredible as well. Wow.

say what you want: This Robben Ford & The Blue line with Beck and Brechtlein was the best there was. So tight and yet all of the musicians filled out there space completely!

Fuck man this is the best trio no question asked!!! Voice, guitar, bass, and drums… All the tone is Amazing!!! EVERYTHING IS AMAZING!!

I will never forget B.B King's quote: "The Blues is just Jazz in disguise." I think Robben Ford emphasizes this balance, with his use of dynamics, emotionally, perfectly. just discovering such a masterful guitarist gives a lot of inspiration.

@@danielhibbins1863 I know what you mean but how could Blues be Jazz in disguise since Jazz comes from the Blues? I don't know, it sounds strange to me... Except from Classical music, Blues is the origin of every other music.

Have seen Robben Ford & The Blue Line several times in Germany - incredible chemistry !

This is my fav live video of Robben Ford and I never get tired of watching/listening to it. They were on fire that night. I extracted the audio from the dvd from it many years ago, so I could listen to it on my iPod.

Totally agree. Saw them in Germany in about 95 and was just blown away at the the beautiful music those 3 made. One of the top Trios ever!

I don't know which I enjoy more his lead playing or his chord progressions. Robben has to be on everyone's top five guitarist list. So tight!! Love when brother Mark joins The Blue Line. Wish they would record/tour again. They are all virtuosos but The Blue Line was/is so special.

Is there a smoother player than Robben? I have been a fan of his for over 25 years. He always plays with taste, and he is a great singer..

Amazing how hard he's working. Very few seconds for him to catch his breath throughout the whole show. There's no place to hide, every note is heard. A prize fighter in his prime.

i'M 65..WHEN i WAS A LAD of 21 at the old Catalyst in Santa Cruz [front street] yapping with Robben....somewhere he mentioned he really liked Fender DELUXE amps.... I've had my unique amp set up for decades...my affordable dumble...... cracking up at this Miles Davis influenced young man.. ALOHA Rob

Fantastic post, thank you. I remember seeing them in London at the Shepherds Bush empire in the early 1990’s. As a guitarist I was really looking forward to seeing Robyn Ford, and he was everything I had hoped for. But seeing them live, Roscoe Beck and Tom Brechtlein absolutely blew me away compared to the studio albums they played on -. The best back line I’ve ever seen. Amazing.

The most virtuosic blues/jazz/rock guitarist (and composer/arranger/singer) to EVER play the instrument - bar none. Seen here at his best. Brilliant playing throughout by Brechtlein and Beck as well. Robben plays the blues as deep in the pocket as his tune "How Deep In The Blues Do You Want To Go" might imply !! Total mastery of dynamics, tonal qualities of the guitar, phrasing, polyrhythm, ellipsis- can play anything from the most complex post-bop changes to pure country with astonishing fluidity and fire.With Robben -every note counts. His rhythm guitar (and comping) alone is sine qua non (without even considering his soloing). Check out his vast discography !!

Blue line- by far my fav Robben Ford albums. I got to see him up close in KC. He had that same red coat on. Wonderful sound!

His voice was actually good! What a band! His tone here is legendary guys a master😎

His choices through the course of each song are exquisite. And that tone! Dang!

"The Brother" is so cool it hurts it is so brief.

Met him once at a show in Cambridge MA. He and Roscoe Beck came out into the audience after the show. We talked for awhile and I was struck at what a truly nice guy he was. Not pretentious at all. He is all about the music.

I met him back around that time too. I'm from Cambridge, and he was playing at Jonathan Swifts in Harvard Square. A week later I met Roy Buchanan at the same club.

Good to see so many comments about Robben's voice, to me it ties so beautifully with his playing. What a rhythm section too, space when it is needed then really full. Roscoe Beck playing shell voicings over walking bass had me looking for the keyboard player!

I'm on a mission to revive this.

I love the 90's , Robben was at the top , I saw the band in 1997, in France at "The Plan" , Ris Orangis, always great !!!

It is most evident in Robben's past, present, and future that his guitar prowess is superb - this recording displays vocal prowess as well. Robben sings like a bird. This man is so under rated in his clean vocals. Regards.

I agree in every way but miss his growling blues vocals... he also has a very particular way of distinct speech, & accent, just beautiful.

Broke the mold after this dude' he is kooler than chill with exceptional skills second to none! Master of him!

The Clean Tone crew...Wes Montgomery ,Benson, Larry Carlton, Bloomfield, Robben Ford......and for years I've heard...man I love that tone.... It's a clean sound you love......No effect pedals..

Yea!!! This was like 1992. I saw "em when they were playing all over L.A. I grew up in Venice Beach so I saw him EVERY time he jammed. YEAH!!!!!!

Locked in a prison of love - This is one fine blues style composition carried to the next level. Love hearing the dual switch from guitar verse to chorus to solo guitar. Can Robben also sing? Most certainly he can and does. Highly under rated.

Been a RF since the LA Express / Joni MItchell days (70's) He was just a kid. Saw Joni at the Capitol Centre (Court and Spark tour). LA Express opened, then backed Her. Holy S##T. Still listen to both 40 yrs later.

Of course Fender discontinued this model years ago...so no support. No signature model of any kind now...though I wonder why since he is so respected but still relatively unknown by the general public. However so was my other hero Howard Roberts.

The 80’s Ibanez guitars were very good and well built and had great tone . My guitar teacher has his that’s the same shape as Robins Fender in this video . Cool that fender built these guitars they sounded damn good especially in a pro’s hands . This concert is burning - the groove is so damn killer 😎🎸

In 90’s we used all the instruments that we wanted. Semi hollow fender, vi strings bass etc. but now we can use 335, tele, les ou Strato, Pb and maybe jb. Thats all. The mídia says use this and we have to use this.
