ROBBED!! Dangerous, Exhilarating Cruising in St Vincent & the Grenadines (Sailing Brick House #81)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Rebecca Childress and Michael Hayward cruise their Bluewater sailboat, a Valiant 40, “Brick House” through St Vincent and the Grenadines in the southern Caribbean. They find a great bat cave to explore and snorkel through, but their buddy boat suffers a very deadly attack one night while anchored…this is the story of how their buddy boat was robbed of nearly everything, at gunpoint.
They say cruising is a series of highs and lows…well this is a great high, but the attack at night is an extreme low..one of the lowest I’ve had in my circumnavigation!

It angers me to no end hearing about good people being robbed at these places. After reading some of the commenst below I have some thoughts to share. Some will be critical, but I mean no harm by it. I'll just point out the obvious and hopefully others and yourself can learn from it. - You actively went to a known crime on yachty location but you were not prepared. - You had a buddy boat which is a huge plus in this circumstance but neither boat had an operational procedure for security. - What should have been done is to have a watch established overnight, every night. 3 hour shifts, one person on one boat then another on the other boat after the first 3 hours. - Comms should have been checked and backups like sirens or horns also checked. - The boats should have been anchored closer together, or better still, tied together. That would have been more intimidating to the invaders. - Weapons are your discression. Its a personal choice, I wont preach. I know what I would have. At the least, you should have a plan with something available for personal protection. The boating vlogs have plenty of legal suggestion in that space. Having nothing means you are at the mercy of other people. It ended with all lives in tact but could have been much worse. - Do not be harsh to folks advocating weapons or tactics. Cultures vary. It just so happens that American culture places a very high value on self protection. That said, anyone advocating coming out two guns blazing, has neither the proper training or the proper tactics. This should always be a last resort if it come down to it, and in some instances should never happpen. You can never truely know in a situation like this if you are out gunned or may escalate a situtaion that could have otherwise been avoided. Its why I always say, it your own personal choice and just leave it at that. - A boat sneaking up to your boat at 2am is to always be treated as hostile with nefarious intentions. It doesnt matter what they look like or who they are or what they are asking for. No sane normal person comes up to a boat in the middle of the night unanounced. They know this, they need to know you know this and will respond accordingly. - Good on you for intimidating them when you did and have them leave. But you failed when you went back to sleep thinking its done. It was a test of your security and they found a hole in the second boat, nobody came forward to challenge them. What you should have done is stay up the rest of the night in a watch rotation, lights on, or night vision running. Took down your dingy and woke up the buddy boat and formed a plan to leave the area immediatly. Just motor someplace else a bit out of the way, or futher from shore. At the very least woken up the other boat. Activity on both boats in the night would have prevented their return. - I can see why the buddy boat relationship deteriorated at that point. You had knowledge of a real security threat, and the result of not sharing it was an invasion, at gun point and choking the occupant. Why buddy boat then. Sorry, that sounds harsh, but its just my observation. He saw it as a failure to protect him when he was most vulnerable and he was one bad mistep away from loosing his life. That changes people. That changes relationships. Keep in mind he also bears some responsibility here. As a singlehanded sailor, even in a buddy boat scenario, he could have done more and he should have known that. For instance, a singlehanded sailors best defense is a dog, any dog, used as early warning. That limits your sailing to pet friendly customs sure and can be a hassle, but an honest review of his own personal safety was ignored by he himself. Again, sorry to say these things, but it should be taken into account as experience so it never happens again. If any of these things I mentioned where done, then you would have nothing more than a great story and memories of a wonderful location. Instead, its an asterisk. One other note. I see lots of apologists in the comments for the locals by locals. Thats not enough. Its a stain on the island, one that is well known in the yachting community. It is up to you, the locals to fix that. That also may sound harsh, but again, its the truth. If you want a good reputation in the yachting community and a future of tourism by what is undoubtetly a very vulnerable sector of tourism, then actively find these people and have a zero tolerance for any piracy. Make a difference, not a post. Safe journeys and fair winds.

You aren’t wrong about any of this. Buddy boating is so much more then just being two boats…kind of why we have never buddy boated in 15 years circumnavigating. We barely have our own security system together, never mind coordinating with another boat. You are right… you can’t come out blazing guns…and we felt they were there to steel stuff off the decks… not come to harm us… everyone thinks worse can’t happen to them, but it can. Thanks for taking the time to write this all out. I’m going to pin the comment so people can see it better and heed the advice. Well written and thought out.

So wonderful to hear from you two 👍. What a great video 👏. Stunningly beautiful and terrifying at the same time. My favorite part is seeing you smiling and happy Rebecca 👏🤠. You have been through so much. I am so pleased to see you and Michael doing so well 😍. I think it's safe to say that were all rooting for you both. You look very healthy and happy and just enjoying your continuing travel and discovery together 🤗. It's been 10 years since our adventure in Kwajalein. I was out there with you and Patrick from April-July of 2012. Been thinking about that time a lot lately. I can't believe a decade has passed since then. It's definitely a mad, mad world out there no matter where you are. So much negative news and crazy events 🤔. Makes you wonder what the hell are we all doing as a species that seems intent on destroying itself and taking the planet along for the ride 😬🤯. Seems like you are hanging out in the Caribbean area and island hoping around. Wow, what fun. Makes me ache for the tropics 😅😂👍, even with the pirates 😬. Be careful and steer clear of the bad people because unfortunately their everywhere. I love the videos and the further adventures of my friends, Rebecca and Michael. Even though I haven't met Michael, I am getting to know him through these videos. Please keep them coming and take care of each other. Your doing a great job! 👍👏🤗🤠 Steve Benjamin

Be proud to be St. Vincentian! These tourist were wrong. THey were warned. Every single country in the world has warnings. My experience with Tourist they don't listen! they are arrogrant and do their own thing. Often times they put locals at risk to save their lives. Just recently by the volcano. YOu should see what they do in Peru! We all have to have an air of caution just to live life. Once a tourist nearly drowned two of my staff trying to save him. We told him the water was to rough to swim. But he didn't listen. And they were two local SVG's. HOw would you feel if it was your father or brother that nearly drown due to ignorance?. Not to mention the garbage they dump in the Grenadines, loose their shit from thier boats in the bay, even though we have laws. So these people need to suck it up! grow up! this is NOT SVG fault. And you need to understand the reality behind tourism. NO body didn't tarnish St. Vincent. Be proud of your country. If you see the prostitution that goes on with the tourist in the Grenadines you would not be so quick to praise these tourist.

@@amrit3213 We we’re warned? So we shouldn’t go to places that have some bad people? Where is that? It’s unfortunate that we had to meet a couple bad people but everyone else was wonderful and we are glad we went. And we will come back…it’s such a beautiful country. If ever you see a boat that loses something over the side, the captain/owner of that boat will be quite happy if you bring it back. Most sailors, like most people in St Vincent, are good honest people that care very much about the sea and land and do their best. Many are very thankful for the tourism in St Vincent which maybe you don’t need personally but many in St Vincent depend on it, just as we do in our countries. Tourists are a pain in my country but I pray not too many people find our tourists. Hopefully not many bad St Vincentians find your tourists.

Hello just came across your site. Great videos and I love your story. Similar to us Käpt‘n Dave and has been sailing for many many years. As for me I just started this adventure 4 /5 years ago. We are flying down tomorrow to Antigua to splash our „Lady Nathalie“ Looking so forward to another beautiful season of sailing in the Caribbean. With that said we too had experienced some awesome beautiful anchorage’s and made so many friends in sailing last season from Antigua to Grenada and back. Anchoring or docking at many breathtaking places and Islands along our sailing. Unfortunately also had been robbed as we both where sleeping in cockpit. I guess we were lucky and didn’t wake up as the intruders walked right by us. They climbed down the hatch and stole $$ and cellphone and off they went. All this happened at Blue Lagoon in St. Lucia. A truly beautiful spot and protected as one needs a guyed to take the sailboat in with a bigger draft. A beautiful marina however I am thinking 2 of going there again. What if I had woken up?! Our unfortunate experience continued later in the season as we where second boat to the tragic rescue of the 30 migrants. A horrific experience looking for people in the water for hours… yet only 15 survivors. It still hunts me from time to time.😢 Sadly sometimes we have to experience these not so happy moments. Memories for sure. I believe there are good people out there and not everyone or everything is bad. I go forward with happiness and can’t wait to make so many more beautiful memories this season. Like you both,we too are in a relative new relationship and enjoying the happy simple lifestyle together. Fair Winds and perhaps we’ll see you in the Caribbean this season!

Thank you for your comment and for that news. Yes you always wonder what if. I agree… many good people down there in the Caribbean. Too bad a few rotten apples spoil some of the places. You have to wonder why the police don’t do more to stop it. But we must keep smiling and seeing the positive side! Happy sailing. You may run in to Michael but probably not me as I’m gonna RV for a few years now!

But most of all I’m so sorry you had that experience. I commend you however for your positivity and love for the blessed Isle, Gem of the Antilles. I share in your joys of the good that overcame the bad. Those who have done this despicable crime will reap their just reward. Don’t you worry. You can take turns for whatever intervals serve each of you best. Wake the other whenever a boat comes near. And please! Let Michael handle it, he seems very able to protect his woman! Sorry you lost your buddy boat. What a horrible experience for him.

Your BEST video since leaving Cape Town! Good video. Good dialogue. Good storyline progression construction. Invest in a Bluetooth lapel mic. Nice job.

Thanks so much David… yes have one of those Bluetooth lapel mic, but never seem to have it when we are filming (or in the water) But thank you..it was difficult to assemble the pieces, but I’m enjoying the editing more these days!

Thanks Roxanne. The robbery aboard was terrible…but the bat cave and the good people of St Vincent and everything else makes St Vincent a hard island to bypass!!!

I have to say that my experience of St Vincent was nothing but happy memories and i found the locals friendly, helpful and honest. That said, we had such a good time there and many other places that i've stopped cruising as i lost my wife 4 years ago and life is hard to enjoy without her.

Ah.so sorry about your wife…it’s so hard to deal with life after you lose your spouse, and indeed hard to enjoy things knowing she isn’t there to enjoy them and see it too…there are certain things and experiences That are so hard to enjoy them knowing he is suppose to be here. So I know what you mean. But neither Patrick or your wife would want you to carry on your life unhappy…so I hope we will both work hard to enjoy what precious time we have left on this earth.
