Watching this, I felt compelled to tell you of a fantastic Aussie film to see. It's a comedy called "Crackerjack", and is based around lawn bowls. Fantastic little film.

@@RobReacts1 sounds like an underdog tale based along racial lines rather than age as with Crackerjack, will check it out for sure. Edit: checked the reviews, not racial but rather a "black sheep".

@@Paldasan I think it would be about your class. The old fashioned stereotypes of bowls being for middle to upper class. But really it's a sport for all. A really good cast of actors as well.

I have always loved playing bowls, used to play short mat bowls for my village team. Sadly due to work I had to stop playing as couldn’t make the meet ups and games. However I manage to get a game of lawn bowls in as a former president of our rugby club (who sadly passed away) was also president of a local bowls club so we do a yearly memorial game. The last match was the first win for the rugby club

I use to work at a bowls club was so fun playing bowls with a bunch of drunk old blokes 😂

Hi Rob. Quite a lot of greens in Australia have sand in the ditch. Also, at our club, we have all ages playing. Including a few families. Husbands and wives, parents and children etc. I like nothing better on a warm summer afternoon than having a roll with a few cold beers.

Played a few games of barefoot bowls at our local club.

When I was a teen it was still seen predominantly as an old person's sport although I do remember there was a guy playing for Australia at the time who was in his late 20's I think. I remember he required the use of a cane though. There were plenty of barriers to entry back then, it was only ever played during the day and events like barefoot bowling didn't start until I was in my 20's and only for functions like Bachelor/Hens nights. There was also the high cost of woods, there certainly weren't any older people willing to risk such an expensive bit of kit on a kid when they themselves were on a pension. Hypothetically speaking as well, if you signed up to do it for sport for a term you needed a teacher who wasn't already down at the club having a liquid lunch or was otherwise unavailable for 9 of the 10 weeks (the remaining Wednesday during that term was very wet). As a result there are many many abandoned greens just waiting for a developer to come along and turn it into a high density dwelling. I might be a bit biased here, but it looks pretty easy to pick the heavier side of a wood, quite aside from the smaller disc on the side there is a clear mass difference where it looks like someone has shaved about 5% of the wood away leaving it looking almost like a flat spot on a wheel. (Puns intended)

Need to check out if you can get some videos of games from bowls Australia. BPL or the UBC are the new quick fire games that are televised here in Australia. The great Sir Alex is always a crowd favourite for the BPL team Brisbane Pirates.

If I'm ever in Hampshire may have to take you up on the offer of a game so I can try it out. Norway is a bit far to pop over from. When I'm in Carlisle to visit family and friends won't be much better.

As you're a player of lawn bowls, I highly recommend you and the missus watch an Australian comedy called, Crackerjack made in 2002.

I started 12 years ago at the age of 19/20 and I am now 31. it's a great sport requiring a lot of skill to be consistent.

Hey Rob, I know you don't listen to music, but thought of something you may enjoy and may learn a little bit more about Oz. Listen to "The Chats" and their hit "Smoko" or their song "Dine and Dash"...they are hilarious young guys

Both my parents were great bowlers. I grew up at the bowling green. Here in Australia we play outside and yes the ditch has sand. I have NEVER in my life heard the bowls referred to as woods. It must be a pommy thing lol.

@@RobReacts1 actually no I havent. I preferred playing tennis. My older brother plays though. Its a great social game, my parents made many friends and being a little girl at the club all the members spoiled me with packets of chips and coke from the bar haha.

Interesting game for sure. I had enjoyed when I think Australia was playing in the 2000 Sydney Olympics or Commonwealth games. It might not be just an oldies game, but I had noticed a couple of times Funeral Homes would pay for advertising at the greens and clubs. Just to remind the members and players that the END IS NEAR!

haha yea retirement homes are the biggest sponsors I would assume. JUST is the main sponsor of the world indoor championships. they help with finances for retired people.

It used to be an old persons game in Australia, well, everyone was old to me back then. When I was a teenager, many years ago, these people had to be dressed in white only wearing a white hat, ala cricket. Reflects the heat I suppose. There was a bit of a debate when coloured shirts were introduced. Womens' skirts had to be a certain length. The women could only play on certain days and also had the task of providing the lunches. How nice for the men! Conservative bunch of old fogies. Thankfully times have changed.
