It is worth to mention that current Polish border is actually Piast border during XI century and closest thing to proper Polish soil. Pomeriania and Silesia were already inhabited by large number of Poles (to make notable Silesia uprising) but region was too heavily tied by Germans. Only Prusia was heavily inhabited by Germans, but it was also territory stolen by Teutonic order, what destroyed native Baltic population.

Poland literally never wanted communism and despised it heavily. Fortunately internal problems of corrupted Russia make incapable to intervene and protests spread like wildfire. As result moderates in communist part take initiative and allied with Solidarity to push away imposters and traitors. Later due to cleaver maneuvering Poland join NATO.

We were forced into this position because we sacrificed our lives for our freedom and freedom of others and in return got betrayed for the good of other countries that didn't want to do jack shit and we're comfortable where they were.

Here's a small fact for you: Poland never surrendered or disappeared from the maps during World War II. How did it happen? Well, we had ships with our flag (like the submarine ORP Orzeł) on the open sea, and that was considered Polish territory. We simply never agreed to surrender ourselves to the enemy on paper... or any other way.

Now, in fact we have no astronauts but we have so many ppl involved in space technology. For example last start of Ariane 5 from European Space Agency. On that rocket was probe shot in the directoon of Jupiter. And Poles managed to build some very important stuff for that probe.

4:13 These protests were not some peaceful gatherings like the youth climate strikes of today. In 1956 in Poznan (why was this date omitted and the events of 1968 were presented as the first protest 3:49 ?) there were fights, to suppress which the regime used 10,000 (!) troops and more than 350 tanks (!). In 1970, during the demonstrations on the Coast (Gdansk, Gdynia) helicopters shot at people....

4:44 6:42 We did not have to "realise that the communism was not a good thing", we knew it from the start. Communism was forced upon Polish Nation, we were thrown into Stalins hands by our beloved allies. We were under Soviet boot since the war ended in 45 until recently. The way you say it sounds like Poles were naive; first entusiastic about communism (despite all the crimes committed by soviets during ww2), while in fact Polish Nation strongly opposed Soviet influence since day one, with obviously the exception of high ranking communist officials selected by Soviets. You still got some reserching to do my friend! ;)

Few things: 1) this throwing Jews away in 1968 came from something like that: After 1945 in polish Communist party there were two wings, Jewish and nonjewish. In 1968 that nonjewish decided to take over that Jewish one, and kicked out Jews from Poland. 2) Poles mostly knew since 1945 that Communist Poland is not what they want, polish soldiers fought against Soviet army after war as well, last died in 1963. Also strikes happened quite fast, first big in 1956. But then communist were to powerful to be defeated. It happened, in some, not very good way, in 1989 thanks to Western world which moves Soviet Union in the edge of bankruptcy. 3) Holes after communism and especially IIWW are still visible. But not only in infrastructure, but also in science. From famous Lvov school of mathematics only very low percent of mathematicians survived war, and even less of them stayed in Poland which have consequences even today. It's also seen in the art, our museums would be much richer in art, if germany and russia wouldn't steal and never return our art. But, those stolen things still are in russia and germany.

I have suggested two important videos under your reaction on "The Animated History of Poland" Part 2. These animated serie shows Polish history in nutshell. But there are a lot of historical events that are valuable to know. For example, Russians in XX century sent thousands of Poles to gulags, which were Russian death camps. In Poland officers tortured and impronised many defiant people who disagreed with government dependent from Moscow. Massacres like Katyń were more. My grandfather was a member of the Solidarity in Częstochowa. He went to prison because of it. He was a political prisoner, and tortured. His health deteriorated so much that he died a few years later, 2 months before my birth. Whole history of Poland is full of attacks from another countries, destroying of cities, economy, education and homes, heroic defending, resistance movements. People from another countries despised us, they laughed at us, they mocked us. Poles feel many emotions like injustice, grief, inferior feelings because of it.

(7:40) Stalin didn't steal the land, it was given as a gift by the West. We feel betrayed by the West. During communism, USSR became one of the wealthiest countries in the world due to the fact that they deplete resources/workforce from their puppet states (like Poland) and that's why eastern European countries are poor and the best example is Germany: there are huge differences even today between West Germany (free country) and East Germany (USSR's puppet state).

Actually under Gorbatchev USSR had a massive shift toward a more humanist government, he basically allowed all these republics to free themselves, including Russia. After the USSR disbaned, there was a chance for democratic Russia, but this nation after all of the years of dumbening down caused by the bolsheviks can only be rules by totalitarianism. Putin is an old KGB officer, he basically recreated the old regime type.

There are 3 things that the series about Polish History show in my opinion: 1. We the Polish never learn from history and repeat the same mistakes. (e.g. helping the others without being helped). 2. We are lucky that we've been living in the longest period without a war in our history. Which leads us to the point 1 because it looks like we're going straight into another military conflict with the same enemy. 3. Once we reach some peace, freedom and prosperity, we are unable to enjoy them for a long time and start fighting with each other in the eternal Polish-Polish civil war.

hi, a polish person here. Yes, being a part of nato and ,,being one" as you said in terms of military is absolutely a good thing. But with the EU its the opposite exactly, just like it wasn't good under russians. Eu basically rules instead of communists and we still don't have much independency. Not that our government is trying or anything, the two biggest parties [wich are basically the same thing, both socialists with the only difference propably being that the one ruling now at least tries to hide it a little and is like sliiightly more conservative, though not really (even their members switch between these two when they feel like it)] are signing whatever eu tells them to, hence now we have some real crisises for example with inflation and the whole coal situation.. not even starting on the electric cars, the topics way too broad.

@@RobReacts1 I didn't say that those fears are always justified or that I agree with them at all, I just said that I think this is what is happening, if you look at this from some perspective, the EU is totally different thing than it was at the beginning, where it was mostly free trade and free travel - nowadays we have significant amount of law that all countries need to align to, not to mention that there are EU bodies who claim that Poland is not a democratic country and want to change it from the outside. I'm not a supporter of current polish government, but seeing it changing its route due to some kind of penalties or threats from EU is totally different than seeing it losing the power in democratic way through elections. I hope you get my point now.

1 We actually did send one dude to space, but that was decades ago and it wasnt our rocket. 2 Also note how complicated our territorial situation is. We have territories that Germans could argue for if they felt so inclined (fortunately, they do not, but our current government has a talent for antagonising people) On the other hand, we have territories that the Soviet Union taken from us, that we'd like back - but since the Soviet Union fell apart, these are no longer Russian - new countries have since sprung up there.

They forgot to mention one key thing about 1989, which even Poles tend to forget. The communism didn't end in Poland because people didn't like it, or because of the protests of Solidarność. There were protests also earlier and it didn't help at all. The real reason Russians gave up in 1989 is the USSR just stopped to work as a country, it imploded because of bad system and decades of stealing, their economics broke and the country gone bankrupt, they just started to lose control of everything and the communists couldn't run the country anymore. Finally in 1990 the USSR stopped to exist, then it transformed into Russia and started over. That's basically the reason Poland is free, if the USSR was doing well, they will never let that happen, and they definitely won't allow Poland be a part of NATO. They would just send troops and pacify the protesters, send them to prison or kill like they did always, and that would be it. We would have to wait many more years to organize and uprise to try to go for freedom. Fortunately it all ended like it ended. Protests, Wałęsa and the pope has nothing to do with that, they gave the hope to people, but they actually couldn't do anything, the Russians was those who had tanks. They just wouldn't let go, if they only can. They're russians, the same now and the same then.

Sometimes we laugh that our country is "a place on earth where tanks can be dispersed". There is also a saying "if not a curse, it's diarrhea or a march of Russian troops". Knowing the history of Poland, you can understand our inborn suspicion of strangers ;)

The thing with Polish nation, in my opinion, is that we just need to have an enemy. When we do we can unite and fight and show solidarity. When there isn't any invader or occupant or some other force that wants to harm us - we tend to turn on ourselves and fight within our own nation. Every time in history that was the case during peace. The question is: are we this way because of our history or is our history the way it is because we are like this?

Good question. What was first? In my opinion, our position determines who we are. Russia has never allowed us to feel that we have stable borders, so that we are not divided. These are the methods they use all over the world. Brilliantly already nearly 200 years ago described Russian French writer and traveler A. Marquis de Custine "Letters from Russia. Russia 1839". Their ambivalence to European civilization.

neither poland nor the republics under ussr "realised" that communism was bad. we were treated like shit from the very beginning, it was just a long process of fighting our way to freedom. it was impossible at first, especially during the stalin era when people were still recovering from the war and were just happy to be alive, not wanting to stand up and risk the death of them and their loved ones. still there were undercover groups of soldiers and civilians who tried to sabotage the system. after many years of fighting, protesting and losing many brave people on the way we managed to find the perfect moment when the government got unstable and willing to negotiate.

The film omitted the huge role that Pope John Paul 2 had in the overthrow of communism in Poland, which later resulted in the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union.

I recommend watching the movies "Wałęsa, człowiek z nadziei" Walesa, a man of hope) and "80 milionów" (80 milion) , which tell about the realities of life in Poland during communism. If you find these movies with English subtitles somewhere. There are parts of these videos on youtube

Poles didnt "realize comunism was bad", they knew it as the first ones, fought comunism ever since and were forced into it after the war by Soviets and allies signing them out to Russia.

What do you mean "polish people have realised" Mate, we have known this since beginning of communism That's why we have stopped Lenin in 1920 Otherwise I am pretty sure Your grandfathers could speak russian The problem of polish history is one; Poland like a free state wasn't present during the industrial revolution first and second, so noone was paying attention with it and it's history plus the Soviet block where we have pushed after the war, that's why you have such a tiny knowledge about Poland

The short movie didn't explain that. In 1967 , Israel start war against Egipt (six days war). Egipt was with USSR (United Socialism Soviets Republics) side. West countries keep side of Israel. So.. That is official reason, why comunistic goverment push Jews to imigration. I mean. Not polish people was antysemits, just polish comunistic goverment want to do something for USSR. (In russian leanguage CCCP, and in polish ZSRR). Another question. Hitler didn't want atack Poland. Hitler wanna atack France to revenge 1st war. What do you think? Why in 1939 atack Poland first?

Wałęsa didn't start Solidarity, he became one of it's leaders when it was already a thing. However many sources teach us that he actually been an agent working for soviets, who helped communistic politicians have a soft landing in the new Poland.

The thing is, current government's policies regarding economy, are very socialistic to the point of bordering communism (even though they also are vocal about changing street names that honor the communist dignitaries and demolishing The Palace of Culture in Warsaw that is the symbol of Stalinism). And there is the ruling party leader, Jarosław Kaczyński, who openly talked about his vision of nationalising private companies like the convenience store chain, Żabka. That, combined with their strict conservative worldview policies, devote Catholicism and giving important public positions to incompetent people simply because they're loyal to the party paints a grim picture for Poland if they hold on to the power. Enough to say that we were in the forefront of coiuntries that were hit the most by inflation in Europe. Hopefully, the elections are coming, although I don't see the other politial parties as much of an alternative sadly.

All elections in post-communist Poland were between: relics of communism under new and fancy disguise, nationalist religious extremists mentally stuck in the Middle Ages and absolute unhinged wackos. And the funniest/saddest part is that each and every party has representatives of all three within it, they just vary when it comes to proportions. The only thing left to do is just voting for what you personally consider the least of all evils.

Its all looks like we had great time after 89 but in 90' we went for so bad poverty, in first part we had unemployed rate at 50%, goverment sold big company for 1zl to private hands who suposed to move it forward but those people empty them from everything left there and sold that for milions on the west left nothing. We maybe in EU for 19 years and we get freedom in 34 but people who been in power when we had comunism are still in goverment so we still have long road before

The British don't have to feel gutted that they left the EU. Firstly You are still in NATO so You are safe in military sense (and Your army is very strong and modern). Secondly You can have alliances with any particular EU country on bilateral basis. The only thing You are scraped off is EU Policy and EU political agenda has many flaws. Love from Poland
