One of the KZread subscribers to this channel asked if I would do a review of the mask I wear in HEMA tournaments. Since I've gotten a number of these requests about this and other gear, I figured I would address all the questions and hopefully provide some useful information to my fellow fencers about what and why I have chosen the gear I wear to this day.

Since this vid was published, and my subsequent victory, I have been preaching the Two-Towel Gospel! Thank you for that enormously helpful tip! /salute

Been using a wukusi mask for a few years and a big fan. Took a long time to ship in from china but now I think they are available at a few us merchants now. I use their shin guards too. Spes officer jacket, spes forearm, spes knees, destroyer modz gorget, koning longsword gloves, leon paul sabre gloves, purpleheart rapier leather gloves. Weapons: two sigi feders, castille english s curve rapier, castille broadsword, sigi sabre, vb sabre, sigi arming sword, sigi katana, purpleheart singlestick, two smallswords and more i am sure i forgetting.

I wear leon paul hi tech shoes but those shoes look interesting. Nice looming gloves.

Thanks for sharing your personal perspective on equipment. Interestingly enough, I have a pair of Fox Creek gauntlets that I got a few years ago for smallsword. I love the fit and quality and have used FCs other motorcycle apparel for years and can attest to sturdy construction I but prefer a bit more padding for the back of the hand for rapier and dagger.

My gajardoni mask was getting old a few years ago so I took a risk on wukusi and it really paid off. I didn't know anyone in the states that had one but a few overseas friends had them and were pleased so I gave it a shot. First tournament with it and people were wanting to know what it was and now a few years later i am seeing them more and more.

For gloves, I have been quite happy with leather rose gauntlets. Not sure if that's a thing in the US, but when I was in the UK, they could be had for not that expensive (looks like they're around £29 now, which sounds a lot more than 7 years ago).

Does the mask trap heat in at the back of the head? I wish someone would make a mask with a mesh back similar to the front so hot air can escape.

Can't say I've ever noticed any sort of heat buildup at the back of any mask I've worn. Since that is the case for me, you may be more aware of it and my not noticing it on this mask wouldn't give you a good assessment.

Bought the gloves to try them out. Super comfortable and they look stylish as hell. Protection level is pretty low though. I'd worry about back of the hand, pinky, and false edge cuts to the bottom of the wrist. Do you used the lined ones or the regular ones you linked to? Or since you're a great fencer do you just not get hand sniped often so the risk benefit analysis is worth it?

Those are the gloves I use for fencing rapier--particularly when I am fencing rapier and dagger. So my hands are behind the protection of the guard on my rapier and the sail on my dagger. Taking a thrust to the hand isn't an issue with these gloves but, no, these are not gloves meant to intercept a chopping cut from your opponent. If you are fencing single sword and a chop is headed your way then the attack should be met with your steel.

@@RobertChildsRapier makes sense. I'm going to modify a demi-gauntlet and use these for broadsword. I can see using them with my sail dagger but not with my ring dagger and I can see using them on my english cup rapier but not my loaner economy rapier which has less protection. And they are lovely for smallsword.
