I’m a professional video editor who’s going to roast the editing and storytelling of MrBeast’s 40 minute video.
So I’ve worked for Logan Paul, Michelle Khare and even MrBeast and on this channel I do edit breakdowns of creators, but for the past 4 years I’ve blamed MrBeast for ruining KZread with “Retention Editing”
I never understood it, thought it was awful simply because it truly “bad storytelling” and at one point he agreed, which is why we worked together on some videos, but he stayed the course on retention editing…until now?
Jimmy posted a 40-minute video that was preluded with tweets claiming he’s ending what he calls “ADHD content” and more storytelling focused and….he, hehehe, Jimmy, I don’t believe you, but, I do love to be proved wrong.
So I’m going this watch the entirety of the Ages 1 - 100 Decide Who Wins $250,000 video and roast and edit breakdown its storytelling and editing, to find out if Jimmy is finally abandoning awful over editing and becoming a good storyteller…

Arent these audio's also just there because people recognize the sound, not as much because it's emphasizing something, but because even the sound itself has gotten its own meaning. Which fuels into the mainstream audience.

Have a nice day everyone edit: This video is amazing :D it is so satisfying to sometimes know exactly what is Hillier going to say before he says it and Im still learning a lot. But I disagree with the comment on the vine boom sound effect, Jimmy is using it because it is so familiar for his young audience. You can see Ryan Trahan doing this in his videos too with roblox "uhm" sf and he often shows some really popular product like prime or mcdonalds.. General audience likes to see / hear references of what they know for some reason.

The people complaining about him “overanalysing” don’t understand that good editing is not noticed but felt. The average viewer may not care about small details but the accumulation of all these small details is what manipulates the viewer’s feelings and differentiates good from great. He’s also using Mr Beast as an example to teach about editing and story-telling in general which can be applied to more than just KZread videos. And for those saying it’s “Just a KZread video” cut this platform some slack, it has been a platform for so many artists. KZread doesn’t mean amateur anymore, just look at how much money Mr Beast is spending and earning from these vids.

When it comes to the “arrow to the red line” point, I do agree with you that in a lot of cases there is no need for the arrow. But with the scale of how many viewers Jimmy has, and with the numerous people with color blindness that might not get pulled in by the color itself, I think it’s understandable and he’s just making the video a bit more accessible to people with disabilities without trying to take away from the rest of the typical viewers.

Either audience won’t mind or it will give some people clarity. Low risk, higher reward. But the concept of intelligence was great to initiate. I really doubt anyone pays attention even subconsciously during the watching experience to that tiny strip of red inbetween the contestants at the start. Bit of an overanalysis there Hayden, no?-using the benefit of the slowed down, in terms of the effect of the analyzed bit on the viewing experience, methinks. Same as the 'if you zoom in you can see from his hand that its CGI' comment. I really doubt anyone (or very few) does that during the watching experience for it to be a valid criticism of the watching experience. It's overanalysis bias in the same way that VAR in football can make functionally insignificant things seem significant when removed from practical experience in real time and slowed down. In terms of making a better video, you're definitely right. It is the small things all added up that produce the overall increases in that wonderful thing we call quality.

I'd love to see a re-edited version made your way to see direct scene by scene comparisons. Imagine if KZread allowed you to AB test whole videos not just thumbnails. Though even then, all it would show us is statistically what version is more retentive / popular, not necessarily what is of higher quality. A lot of the best films made are far less well known than a lot of popular trash

I love your videos and have watched every single breakdown video and roast youve done and learned so much, but the way you talk about mrbeast specially at the end like hes some kind of villain that ruined youtube and ruined a generation of creators and destroyed the platform etc... just sounds so wrong and makes you look very bad and discredits everything you say in my opinion and makes me want to stop watching, there's a reason hes the biggest youtuber in the world, why he broke every view record there is, consistently gets over 150M views per video and raised the bar so high for what was known as "Just a youtuber" can do specially with the new Amazon deal... Its not his fault that other youtubers decided to just copy what hes doing thats how life is... Apple came out with the airpods and suddenly every single company has its own airpods and you can get ones for 1$, that doesnt mean apple destroyed the airpods market.... Im not saying there is no room for improvement and mrbeast is the god that makes no mistakes, but he didnt reach 250M subs and billions of views/month following every single storytelling theory and editing masterclass, saying he destroyed the platform while being one of the only creators pulling in this amount of views just sounds so silly from your part. No hate i love your breakdowns but as a viewer and creator as well, i just thought id share my opinion, all the love ❤❤

And focusing on tiny details like the arrow, vine boom and font is definitely something that put me off... This is core mrbeast brand identity and editing style that the fans got used to and enjoy you cant take that away just because editing has to be this perfcet cinematic style. Imagine if "Friends" suddenly changed their intro song after 9 seasons and 218 episodes, fans would be PISSED..

Tbh, I have no problem with his font and the vine boom. His hatred towards the vine boom made me laugh so hard; I couldn’t stop, but he’s not wrong it’s been overused though. Also the font, what I find funny is he told *us* to have our own font which that’s literally MrBeast’s own font. Also when Hayden roasted ZHC, he used the exact same font and Hayden never said anything about it.

The thing is, as a successful KZreadr myself with over 10 years of experience and 4 million subscribers I know how peoples minds have started to become more and more obsessed with short form content. I have started becoming a low budget filmmaker in the last 2 years and in that time I've come to an interesting conclusion. Mr. Beast is competing for his viewers time and with him pouring in so much money into his content he would need to hook onto his viewers in a short time frame. long form content has been ruined by TikTok and other social media platforms that focus on just short content. The Pop Culture industry is going downhill fast because no one in Gen Z want to watch a video over 30 seconds long. In order for Mr. Beast to make enough money to justify how much he spends per video, he is forced to create long form content. The only way to grab on to his viewers attention is by making ADHD content and doesn't really have a choice. This whole thing isn't Jimmy's fault it's Gen Z's fault and as a Gen Z myself I can sometimes become bored of long form content and just scroll for hours because of the sheer amount of dopamine getting released in my head. The Gen Z's and Gen Alpha kids all crave this same dopamine but because they're spoiled by Shorts and TikTok, they cannot stay interested long enough. all of this is the same reason movies are bombing now days, is because no one wants to dedicate 2 hours to one "video" when they could watch thousands in the same time frame by scrolling. This in no way is Jimmy's fault and he actually has made people still watch some form of long content even if it is ADHD content.

You are Right and Wrong at the same Time but what you are saying is based on your point of view But l don’t wanna Lie that was the Best Video from Mr Beast and we quite enjoyed it . And us as MR BEAST Core Fans we enjoyed it when Mr Beast puts his Old Font and His Old Editing effects like the arrow and Vine Boom sound . It makes us to feel at Home or Sense of belonging because we are used with that Style . I watched your video till 9 Minutes and l think one of the reason why l didn’t go till the end is that l was starting to feel like you are now treating yourself as the Superior Editor in the World. It’s evident that you lare Raising Points on your Own Point of view but on the other hand please not that not anyone Likes your POV of that video because You are Thinking using Editor’s POV not our view as Audience. Please don’t get my message wrong l Love You Both with Mr Beast .

Yeah and ironically, Hayden told *us* to find our own font and that's clearly MrBeast's own font. When he said the arrow just make us feel dumb, clearly we don't know if some people are intelligent enough to understand what MrBeast was saying. The vine boom, I don't mind at all, but when Hayden reacted to it, I find it extremely funny; literally almost a lot of KZreadrs uses the vine boom. At 48:04, I would agree with Hayden. They should've not shown 58 stepping outside of his cube which it does make it less suspenseful which I think Jimmy's intention was to make that scene suspensful.

It had some amazing moments, but unlike the other video that was similar to this, I personally didn’t feel like I really knew anybody, no real character building, other than in some really rare instances, even among the “main characters”. And even though I got teary eyed three times, I personally think that if they were able to add more reality show type moments between the contestants (drama, relationship building, that it would have had a stronger impact, even if you had to cut down on the actual gameplay. I think they tried, but I didn’t feel really connected to anyone or fully rooting for everyone. One of the things that reality shows do (even though I really only watch them with my mom lol), and granted it’s over an entire season, but they allow you to get to know the contestants and by end you actively despise some of them and actively root for your favorite. I didn’t get that here. I also come from traditional Hollywood (though I’m slowly transitioning out to do my own thing) and have really close relationships with Oscar winners and just really smart and amazing storytellers, some who have been my mentors, so that may play into some of what I’m feeling. And I agree with a lot of your improvements that would have added to the impact or drama or sense of satisfaction.
