the song is not about depression, it is about the abusive relationship between Phil Spector and Ronnie Spector. Phil would not allow Ronnie to leave the house and escape the relationship. He would threaten to track her down and kill her if she ever tried to leave or left. thats why the lyrics are, "you change your name or change your mind, and leave this f*ed up place behind, but ill know ill know." Phil even gave Ronnie twin children on christmas, so it was harder for Ronnie to leave the house and relationship, given the name of this song is "Christmas Kids"

Phil wouldn’t let Ronnie leave the house no matter what and even hid her shoes so she couldn’t leave. Phil threatened to kill Ronnie if she ever left. Like he would track her down and kill her if she ever escaped and even had a glass coffin that he kept so he could ‘see her when she died.’ Really a horrific marriage and Phil even gifted Ronnie twins on Christmas so she’d be completely stuck, which is why the song is titled ‘Christmas kids’.
