I lived in the NC outer banks for a while. I can't fathom what would give the English the idea that it was a suitable place for a colony. The barrier islands are essentially just wind blasted sand bars sticking above the water. Very little fresh water. Surrounded by deep water on more or less all sides. Constant danger of storms. Alligators were likely everywhere. Miserable summers and miserable winters. Especially considering this was during the little ice age which lasted from 1400-1800, time would have been tough. So they chose a sand bar. Genius. The mainland would have been a much better choice.

Nah, they parted ways. The channel manager posted a video saying she mismanaged the channel while dealing with the loss of her father. He originally owned the channel and when he passed, she suddenly had to learn how to run his whole business. Simon and the channel parted ways amicably and everyone is still friendly. ATM they're still in search of a permanent host. All of this applies for Toptenz too.

I do wonder what happened to the colonists.

Most probably these lost colonists were taken off by the mosquitoes... I've been there many times and some relatives have a home in Wanchese (Roanoke Island) and I can testify that the mosquitoes in that area are voracious...they fight over which one gets to take the hapless victim back into the swamp.

Without any of the native Croatoan there's no way to test for any traces of English DNA. If they went to live with them they for sure integrated into the tribe.

Why don’t they do some DNA testing of natives that can trace their heritage back to the Roanoke area and see if there is some European DNA mixed in.

"America's Lost Colony"! Don't you mean "England's Lost Colony"? After all, the USA (aka "America") didn't exist when the colony was founded in 1585 (not 1587). And didn't for another 190 years. It was founded by the first Queen Elizabeth's England, not America. 😉

I don’t understand why Simon isn’t here, is he just too busy?

Not sure I feel enlightened on the topic after watching. We seem to see a lot of this bloke's talking head, with a few photos inserted on repeat. The last half needed expanding. The actual theories are brushed over, with each given about as much time as the alien theory. Could have better described those missing,, women, men, children? DNA evidence? Do any Indigenous people still live in the area? But basically the English massacred the Indigenous people? How many? That deserves much more time. The narrator seems more concerned about garnering comments for his scriptwriter mate than about telling a full and interesting story. I'm not pining for Simon - he's on too many channels and has become the ultimate script reader, inserting his oh-so-witty smart-arse comments, while clearly not being engaged in the content of the actual script he's reading. In journalism and PR, it's a career-ending fail if you become the story. However that seems to be the style of so many channels - it's all about the host. I'd much rather get lost in a well-told, well-researched story where the narrator is not the dominant factor.

The Geo/Bio Graphics are officially losing my subscription. I subscribed for Fact Boy, not these other presenters. Just sad to see 2 of my favorite Whistler channels be left behind by the man himself. Maybe one day Simon will return. But until that day I am done. The videos just don't have the same life Simon brings to the table while discussing facts.

No lmao. There was a single word carved in a wood post at the fort. Which was the name of a native tribe. Most likely they were killed by the tribe and the tribe left the markings. They didn’t write down “went to this place to meet these and survive etc.”
