Roald Dahl | Parson's Pleasure - Full audiobook with text (AudioEbook)

Roald Dahl Collection Playlist: • Roald Dahl Collection
Mr Boggis is a skilled antiques dealer who has a small shop in Chelsea, London. He manages to make a profit each year by buying valuable furniture cheaply from unsuspecting country people while posing as a clergyman and president of the Society for the Preservation of Rare Furniture. He gains entry to their houses in the guise of cataloguing their old furniture; if he sees something he can re-sell, he offers to buy it. In order to buy the furniture for less than it is worth he uses his knowledge and a number of tricks, such as substituting machine-made screws for the genuine old ones. Karma comes around for him in the end.

    @@lewiskirk8289 First of all, you’re an amazing narrator. Your voice is so calming, besides the perfect acting out of characters. I am an actress and I could never do what you do. I hope this does get to you privately. I didn’t want any of your listeners to get turned off to reading or listening to you reading Roald Dahl stories. It’s a real conundrum for me. He was a horrible man. A known anti-semite, a racist and bigot. He treated woman terribly, mostly his wife Patricia Neal. He was a huge philander and worst of all he had an affair with her best friend and subsequently married her. This was while Patricia Neal was recovering from severe strokes. The British Royal Mint had rejected a proposal to mark the 100th anniversary of Dahl’s birth with a commemorative coin due to the fact that he was “associated with anti-Semitism and not regarded as an author of the highest reputation.” How do we separate the man from his writings?

  • @lewiskirk8289

    @lewiskirk8289

    Жыл бұрын

    It may be difficult for you to separate the two knowing all the things you know. I would like to know what your sources were, or are. This is an interesting broader question beyond the man Dahl isn’t it? The distance between the creator and their creation. I’ll be honest with you. I didn’t know any of the above, and perhaps some of it is true, maybe all of it is true… but does that change the wonder of his works? Does it change the magic of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? The wonder of Matilda. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending him if he has behaved in the ways you described, I just think it wouldn’t detract from his magical writings. For instance, let’s say I added a disclaimer to the beginning of each of the videos, laying out what you’ve said. It would impact each person differently, some would be disgusted, and others wouldn’t care, and all reactions in between. For me, the man has passed away, so I can’t ask him what he’s been up too. And knowing the narrative nature of the news media, and also the vindictive nature, makes me question the sources you have. That’s my two cents worth. I hope it helps you somewhat. But tell me what you think? 🙏
