    Ron, this is truly inspirational work.... My woodworking career is having to go through serious reconsideration for health reasons. Taking a sideways look at utilising my skills has brought me searching KZread in earnest... During my journey, I have also learnt to TIG weld and worked at a very basic level with sheet metal. Like a lot of guys, I am a total petrol head and love all things 2 wheeled and 4 wheeled. Seeing your work has given me a real sense of hope. Loathed to give up my shop and all my hard earned tools and machinery. This may just be a new direction for me, combining my skills from woodwork, and applying them to something I am truly passionate about. Having found your channel completely by accident, I've been glued to my laptop watching your work. You are a craftsman of the highest order, and your work is truly amazing. You're an incredible teacher, I can only wish to have had you as a mentor. Thank you sir. Watching you work is a blessing. Best wishes Ryan

    Ryan - I know from experience how life can throw you 'punches' at times. This happens to everyone, in one form or another. The most important thing is how you choose to react to these life changes. I hope that working with metal and welding can offer some new opportunities for you!

    There is a shop in San Francisco that builds them brand new metal 32-34 in those years scratched build they build 6 cars a year with all the new up dated modern-day drive tran. Gorge Lucous bought one Clint Eastwood, BB KING and many others had bought a car from this company. They have a back order and people have already bought a car that hasn't been made yet. In the 1990's I was visiting all the body shop's in the bay area and in California to see what they were building. That was when I first got into welding. Me and my buddy had are own body shop right out of high school. Met many people at car shows got invited to shops then they new someone they invited. From there I got it in my mind that I will go and visit body shops. It helped because I was driving a old 50's car.

  • @RonCovell

    @RonCovell

    10 жыл бұрын

    You certainly could use contour gauges to do this work, but I find that having several templates joined together makes a more durable pattern. I use a hand-operated shrinker and stretcher to curve the templates. Yes, it is a lot of work, and not everyone will take this approach, but I think it's a good way to get the results I want.

    Making a buck can be a pretty big production, so I don't 'throw it away' if I think there is any chance I might use it again. I'm fortunate to have a fairly large storage area, but it's getting pretty full. It really helps if a buck can be disassembled, so it takes up less space. For that reason I rarely glue a buck together.

    @@RonCovell I saw a square tube framework that I understood you to refer to as a "template" used to guide building the buck. Since I used to fabricate frames I would be interested in seeing the template development. Thanks and congrats on your sheet metal skills!

    Now I understand. To make the wooden buck, I used a stretcher and shrinker to shape small steel angles. I shaped these angles to fit the body in all the areas where the 'stations' of the buck would go, then traced them onto sheets of MDF, and cut them out.

  • @RonCovell

    Eric, it certainly would be possible to shape new metal to fit an existing body, but I wanted to do some of the forming by hammering against the buck, and you couldn't do that much hammering against a sheetmetal body.

    ok, so in between 1:34, to 1:36, you see here is my problem. THIS is the typical "hand waving" that occurs with all these so called "experts". They are leaving out critical, very arduous, time consuming and capital (tooling) intensive steps and then act like ANYONE can follow along, like this is painting by Bob Ross or something.
