Adam, that Moorish style building is the old Henry Plant Hotel--built in 1891--and was used by Lt. Col. Teddy Roosevelt and other senior US Army officers and war correspondents before the invasion of Cuba in 1898. The US Army 5th Corps--the invading force--was organized in Tampa because of the railroads that brought thousands of troops to Florida from all over the US. The building is now part of the University of Tampa. It is worth walking around inside the building and visiting the small museum devoted to the old hotel, one of the finest in Florida at the time. The hotel closed in 1930.

Hi Adam, I actually live off that exit and wanted to share the knowledge that I have. The "boat" building was actually bought and built to protest Dinosaur world. It was constructed by a company who wanted to push a creationist viewpoint that dinosaurs were not real and that god had created everyone. Therefore, they decided that building it as "Noah's Ark" was appropriate. However, the full irony of it is that the company/person who had it built could not afford the flood insurance for the business and ultimately just left it in the state we see it now.

  • @milkywayskywalker

Christian creationists believing dinosaurs never existed? I've been in all kinds of Christian churches my whole life... never heard that "claim" until the last couple of years during the pandemic, much less that they would be "protesting" dinosaurs. It's gotta be a pretty small group of people. As a kid, my Christian mom took us to Dinosaur National Monument so we could see real dinosaur fossils still buried in the ground. The explanation that the park rangers gave us as to why there were so many dinosaurs that died together in one location was due to a massive flood. Ain't nobody I know protesting dinos! That's ridiculous.

The former Plant Stadium is now the football field. There is a placard near we’re home plate used to sit that marks where Jackie Robinson also once batted. The actual Babe Ruth home run ball is still located on property in the museum. I just recently found that out. So glad you got to see the John Lennon statue. Too bad we couldn’t come up with a W. Still plenty of good rays baseball ahead of us . Great video buddy.

It would mean so much to me personally because when I was a young kid, I went through that Recruit Training Boot Camp right there in Orlando. That was such a long time ago. It is a shame the Base was torn down and all of the significance of Orlando & The Navy is virtually erased, with the exception of these statues.
