Roads of Westfjords, Iceland: 626, Hrafnseyrarvegur (Hrafnseyrarheiði) (07.07.2021)

626 is a mountain road in Western Westfjords region of Iceland. It used to be one of the connecting routes between northern and southern area of Westfjords, but it was troublesome to keep this road passable during the winter. So, in October 2020 a tunnel was opened, and road 60 now runs through there. This means 626 goes into the category of roads that can be enjoyed during the summer months. While I am writing this summary, it’s the 26th of October and at this moment 626 has already been marked as “impassable” on www.road.is. If you happen to be in the area during the summer and have some extra time and the weather is clear, then I suggest checking out this route. It doesn’t take very long time to drive through and there are beautiful views towards both sides of Hrafnseyrarheiði. The road was in a pretty good condition and doesn’t need a rugged jeep to get through. Maximum elevation of that road is 525 meters (1722 ft).
This video doesn’t cover 626 in its full length. We start at a parking area by Hrafnseyri. It’s a small ancient settlement and a famous and important person for Iceland, named Jón Sigurðsson (1811 - 1879) was born there. He was one of the key figures to help Iceland move towards its independence. In Hrafnseyri there is a cafe, musem and a church. We drive just a little bit further towards road 60, but then turn around and start tackling the mountain pass. Entire length of 626 is 30 km (18 miles), in this video we cover 19 km (13 miles) of it.

I did this drive alone in 2015 when there was no choice--this WAS the 60. More cloud cover that day. Really driving in fog, no views of the far sea at all. So beautiful at 3:40 and your other pause near the 5:00 mark... thank you for those. At the switchbacks it was impossible to gauge how steep the slopes were at sides of road. I assumed a sheer drop and just crawled along in the thick fog with my flashers on, thankful there was no-one else on the road the whole time, in either direction. Quite the adventure!

Yeah the fog can seriously mess everything up on these mountain roads! For me were the roads to Látrabjarg and Rauðisandur that were completely ruined by the fog. I was hoping to make drive-through videos of these mountain roads as well, but dropped the idea as only a very thick fog and the hood of the car can be seen on these clips... :)
