I've always thought that if Anette had been in nearly any other symphonic metal band, she would have been beloved in the way that Elize Ryd and Charlotte Wessels are beloved by fans of the genre. She has vocal skill and personality. She just wasn't a good fit for Nightwish's catalog previous to DPP, though I did enjoy the arrangement of "Nemo" when she would sing, and it was always going to be rough being the person to follow Tarja. Also, every now and then it hits me how weird "Imaginaerum" is. I love the album, but it's an odd one at times.

General rule of thumb with Anette - If there's a studio version available, go with that. She has good live performances, true, but she struggled as often as she killed it. She's unpredictable. Her work on DPP and Imaginareum, as well as several bonus tracks, is awesome.

That's exactly what I wanted to say. On the albums she sounds fantastic, live she is often pitchy, sometimes short of breath although there are some good performances as well. There is however not so much live material of her and I pressume that has a reason. Here she nailed the witchy tic-toc part but on the verses she sounded of key and the harmonies/the singing together..., well Tank already said it.

I actually decided not to go to a Nightwish show for that reason once. I LOVE Anette and Imaginaerum is almost definitely my all-time favourite album. But her live performances more often than not just didn't do it for me, and I decided against going. The show I missed was November 5th 2012, London Brixton Academy, which was of course among Floor's first shows. I've seen plenty of footage from it, and to this day I regret not going.

Actually the movie was written to go with the album. (The album was released in 2011 and the movie was released in 2012). It wasn't going to be a movie at first. Toumas originally was wanting it to be a series of music videos for each song but got creative input for others involved with the project and eventually evolved into the movie Imaginaerum. But the main thing here is that the movie is amazing and the album is awesome. Tank should definitely check them both out.

Saw some comments suggesting Dead Boy's Poem. The version performed by Floor @ Buenos Aires in 2018 is something special, in my opinion, there are a lot of great nuances in that performance. She uses her ability to "change" her voice (more specifically, the positioning of the throat and the space) at a point that it would be like a guitarist changing the tune of the guitar while playing it.

Scaretale is my favorite Nightwish song. Tuomas told Annette to sing in a scary voice. Too bad you didn't check out the other version. It features the carousel that was displayed above the stage. The video shows scenes from the movie Imaginarium. This song is featured in that movie. The movie is a bizarre fantasy but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed Marco's performance here. He wears a top hat and tails in the video so he looks like a ringmaster. If you want to hear a Marco and Annette duet that sounds awesome then you need to hear The Crow, The Owl, and The Dove. Don't think there's a live version, but I bet, if you listen to it, you'll think it sounds like no other Nightwish song, like you said for this one.

there are not a lot of live recordings of Anette with a reason. She was the only singer, where they made videoclips (besides Human Nature in Covid time) That was for a good reason. I saw them all live, Tarja, Annete and Floor (many times) but Anette at Exit festival (Nivi sad Serbia) was terrible. Really. I did not listen to nightwish for 8 years after that live show. It just hurted me, HOW bad she sounded. Back on track with Floor and having a blast again with their live performances

Next time, Poet and the Pendulum. Please do the one with Floor from Wembley 2015, and preferably the one with lyrics. Those help a lot. And as I mentioned before, it also helps to read Tuomas' letter to Tarja, and her letter back. 😊 The song is about Tuomas' depression after the backlash he got from fans after firing Tarja. He had to go back to his parents to recuperate, and he was thinking of suicide in this period. In the song, there's a section of his time at his parents, and the words in the song are supposedly almost the exact words his parents said to him. I really can't wait to see your reaction. And I'm hoping you'll do the new album soon as well. Human :ll: Nature is best when heard chronologically. 😊

IMAGINAERUM is a very special album. It is of course connected to the movie they made of it, as many have already told you. It is worth checking out: it is obviously no big Hollywood production, but personally i'm still moved by it every time i watch it. The album itself, you could say, tells the story of a life. It begins with a lullaby (Taikaviti, one of two or three Nightwish songs in Finnish language), it speaks of fear and hope for the future (Ghost River), of love (Slow, Love, Slow), rational and irrational terrors (Scaretale) and works up to the death of loved ones (Turn loose the Mermaids) and to our own demise (Rest Calm, which is one of my favorite). It is an album that needs to be lived through from start to end, in the order it was designed in, to fully appreciate it. It would be cool to see you react to the movie one day, although i can tell it would be... complex, for sure. Other thought of the day: man, i would be so damn hyped if they brought back Scaretale with Floor. It is an amazing exercise to try and imagine what she'd do with it... And ohhhh. The Poet and the Pendulum is going to hit HARD. I look forwards to your reaction!

Nightwish can always surprise. Their range of musical expertise is pretty amazing. Without restrictions. Tuomas especially doesn’t like trying to limit or categorize his musical creativity. And we are also winners here. We get to enjoy his musical creativity. Even when boundaries were set for him, he was able to create a masterpiece. Although he originally didn’t want to do it because there were too many regulations about what kind of song it should be. But he did it and now we’ve had the pleasure of hearing that song for 20 years. "Sleeping Sun". In this song "Scaretale", all members of the band get a chance to shine. But of course it’s very memorable due to Anette’s performance. I really consider this one of his best songs. Suitable for his voice. And Jukka's drums !!! That man really knows how to play drums in different songs in different ways.

Imaginaerum is a concept album with an interesting premise. If you ever listen to the album front to back (which I highly recommend) you should take a second to research the story. This is the tour Floor came into to finish the tour, and she eventually ended up at Wacken. You can se Floor doing this at the Hartwall Arena, her first concert in Finland 2012. She didn't do that bad, but they quite soon dropped the song from the setlist for the rest of the tour. This is Anettes song, both live and studio. Yes, please listen to this album it is amazing. And I quite go with you with Markos and Anettes voices. And...Nightwish never did any kind of official videos, or any other concerts dvd with Anette. Great job, thanks. It's really interesting to learn from you about board mixing because, when it comes to bands like Nightwish, I have this need to watch their official live versions (that will obviously have editing and such) and scour KZread for audience fancams just so I can try to gauge how different they both are (which has its pros and cons; I doubt audience members have high quality recorders in their phones when they record so that's always gonna be an issue)

I have never heard Floor sing Scaretale, and I have every confidence she'd kill it, but this is one of those rare NW songs where I vastly prefer the album version. I think Anette went way, way overboard with the whole "wicked witch" vocal feel, whereas on the album it feels much more deliberate, fine-tuned, and appropriate for the song. The other issue I have is that on virtually every NW video I've heard, the backing tracks are always much lower in the mix than the album version, and while that's usually not a real problem, so much of the feel of this song comes from the backing tracks and having them be weak just weakens the song overall.

This is definitely a deep cut, I did not even realize this was an official, seems to be "from the archives". If I am not mistaken, one reason the leads don't sound well together is they did not get much, if any, rehearsal time together before the tour, I think Anette was injured or something like that... That said, you should really take time to listen to Imaginaerum end to end, one evening in a darkened room. it's one of those albums that is greater than its many stellar components, clearly written as one tightly integrated whole, much more than any of their albums before or since. I'd suggest Halloween, but DT is doing his HW show, so maybe too much of a good thing)))

I can see where your critique about them "singing" together comes from. I've heard them do Ever Dream(both live and on video) together and they really harmonise in the chorus there, but in this song there's such a huge contrast between Marko actually singing the finale and Anette still more "saying" the words in an exaggeratedly musical way - it's just a bad on-set style choice, where they both go for nearly the exact end of their extremes. He's underlying her gritty tone with too much fullness and that makes it sound off for the ear. BUT, I have to say that I already thought I meanwhile learned all about stage SFX from you - you have proven me wrong. There's still stuff to learn. lol Great reaction as always!

Okay Tank... been binging on your stuff today waiting on if any kiddies come for All Saint's Night. Part of what you are hearing is that usually Nightwish has months to rehearse together. But because Anette broke her ribs, the 12 weeks she was supposed to be rehearsing, she was laid up and told not to sing. Anette is a great vocalist in studio, but has tone issues live. This was from the start of the tour that got her fired and the set list changed. Now having said all that... and since you like Pyro, can't wait to see your reaction to Greatest Show on Earth... preferably Live at Tampere... where the Pyro guys out do themselves, although if you can splice in the outro from Sir Richard Dawkins from Wembley... it's worth a look-see. Also take a look at Song for Myself... they actually have head banging sections set into the song.

Just looked up this song with Floor on vocals and it is about the same as Annette. I think that Annette does the witchy voice better with the high squeels she does where Floor drops down a bit. Listening there isn't a lot going on vocally really. Most of the song is intro and Marco takes over fairly quickly so there isn't a lot to do for either Floor or Annette. Also looked into the CO2 for toxicity....Sorry, but I'm a chemist by trade and was curious in its use in shows. Normal concentration in the air is 0.04% and you breathe out 4-5% Concentrations above 1% in a badly ventilated room will start giving you issues with long term exposure...I mean hours here but these are very mild. Around a concentration of 8% of CO2 you'll be dead in an hour and at 20% you'll be dead in minutes. This is why I'm surprised that there are no regulations in place for it's use. Outdoors there wi no issue but in small venues it could be. Of course there has to be little to no ventilation and you would need to use a lot of CO2 but still...
