Without bias, they are one of the best rhythm sections playing today, period! If bands were cars, _Band Maid_ would be a pink Nissan GT-R with a Hello Kitty graphic wrap. Cute and girly-looking, but with a mean snarl coming from under the hood. The snarl then grows to a roar, the tires start to scream and smoke, and it's off to the races.

Freedom live. Akane is finally shown for what she can really do. Everyone is all hype about Misa and Kanami, and they both are outstanding. Love them both, but Akane rules. She can keep up with both Misa shredding on one side and Kanami shredding on the other and her change ups and off beats match both perfectly. Her timing is impeccable. That combined with Miku's rhythm ties all the songs together. In my honest opinion, Akane and Miku deserve more credit. Its their work that allows the other two to shine. Freedom live....watch and enjoy.

Misa is THE reason I gave this group a 2nd chance and Onset being the 3rd thing I heard from them is what turned me into a fan who will blindly buy an album to be surprised or disappointed by like when I was a kid. Thankfully it's all been good and that initial song I didn't like has since grown on me.

Will hop on the Freedom (live) bandwagon. And, from the same show, Play (live). But for some contrast, find the MV for Thrill. It’s from very early in their career, and while their talent is there, it’s less refined, and you can see where they were in the beginning. Which was still very good.

My little brag whenever I see a reaction to this vid. I was lucky enough to be at the first public performance of this song. This show was at Zepp Tokyo on April 13, 2018. It was the last in a three-show mini-tour that started at Nagoya Diamond Hall (April 4, 2018) with Osaka Namba Hatch (4-6-2018) in the middle. I had planned a trip to Japan for that two-week period and managed to get tickets to the show. While I was waiting for the show, another guy from the USA came up and was talking to me; he had an extra ticket which he offered me. Show tickets in Japan are numbered, and he gave me #24 (I had #175 or so). So, I ended up being on the rail between Saiki and Kanami. Weirdly enough, I ran into a Japanese guy also on the rail who I had met the year before at the J-Pop Summit show. In any case, Diamond Hall has a capacity of about 800, and I believe it was sold out. So, I was one of the first 800 people to get to see this performed live :)

They didn't invent rock and roll, but goddamn if they haven't perfected it. I'm almost angry that I didn't find out about them until February this year... a band THIS good, with THIS much talent, should be much more well known. Really enjoyed your honest reactions - a lot of reaction videos seem somewhat trite, but when folks who really know music see BAND-MAID for the first time, they invariably come away with tears of joy and a huge smile. And that's probably what I love most about them - they're not only great, but they seem like genuinely good people. It's literally all about the music with these women, and it shows.

Great reaction....appreciate the thoughtful comments....to me this is a progressive rock band in the same space as Rush, in that they have a unique sound that is inherently Band Maid and they mix so many genres not only in their library but within the same songs, whether its rock, punk, metal, jazz, blues, pop whatever...one of the things you can do is listen to a song 5 times and focus on each member and find things that you missed and start really to appreciate each member in their own right...hard to pick favorites with a catalogue of 90 plus songs that are all good....I would say Freedom is a great song for Akanes solo, but many songs like Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Moratorium, and on and on....welcome to the Madiacs Army...saw them Oct 1st last year in LA best 16hour drive roundtrip I have ever had....cheers..

Kanami is a bloody song writing musical genius. You can see why the other ladies in the band call her Sensei. When she's in her studio work mode. In interviews she plays like she's a bit of a ditzy airhead. Shes defiantly not that. She' loves writing music to show off the others talent. I have seen and heard a lot of bands since the 70's. I honestly don't think I can think of any better than this band right now. The talent level of this band is insanely. And what I love best about them. They truly love being and performing together. BTW, since this was shot 2 years ago, there WAS a slight change in gear since the most current shows in 2020. Miku changed over from Marshall stack used in this show to the Peavy 5150 you mentioned seeing in the previous video. She also added a Zemaitis Flying V to her arsenal (which she uses when she has to switch tunings for certain songs). MISA also added a custom Black Cloud SG style 5 String, although the custom Black Beauty seen here is her main. Kanami really hasn't changed up her gear since this show was filmed. Also, they all have gone wireless for shows in Japan which gives them much more freedom of movement on the stage. If you look close, you'll see that they are still using full cables here.

I've been eagerly awaiting a new reaction to Band Maid - you have a substantial musical background and your insights greatly add to my own knowledge of this incredible band - and yes, you've barely scratched the surface... Definitely Freedom live - also Play, Real Existance, Puzzle, and if you're lucky enough to find a copy online, their mind-numbing live version of "Moritorium"... and somewhere along the way you have to check out the MV for "Thrill" - their first big hit from 2014 when they were all in their early 20's and even then showing signs of the incredibly things to come... oh, and their "Blooming" MV - a must see.. and the dozens of others.... and then their alter-ego "Band-Maiku".... ok, that should get you through the rest of the year :)

I loved your reaction to them and you did some great research for the tank facts which I always appreciate You mentioned the song that I would suggest the most from one thing you mentioned during the song which is Freedom (live) from the Shibuya concert. Play (live) and Rinne (MV) I would also highly recommend and all are on their official YT page.. Great reaction to a great instrumental. Thanks Tank!

Akane will bring you to your knees in "Freedom", also "Wonderland" is a masterpiece from Shibuya; however, this song, Onset is from the show in Zepp Tokyo 2018...from that show try "Puzzle" - it will take your breath away, "Turn me On"...Misa will turn you on big time, amazing bass showcase, also - Play live from Zepp, again Misa and Akane; "Moratorium" - will stop your heart, 5 vs 6 string battle Misa vs Kanami in "Take Me Higher" and "Don't you tell Me"!!! You mentioned the production...have you noticed that big-ass chandelier on top of the stage???))) The list goes on and on!!! All live performances, don't waste your time watching the MV's)) There is one undeniable truth here - no matter what you do in life, there will be always 100lbs Japanese girls in maid costumes that can do it better than you...!!! They're making so many bands look bad, honestly, they are way too good to be true...

Great reaction and you're in for a GREAT ride. Band Maid is one of the best rock band ever, PERIOD. They write and arrange their songs, they're the total package. If you want to go on a journey I'd say start with Thrill, it's their first big hit BUT it was written for them when their label wouldn't let them write their songs. Then go check Alone, it was the first song the label let them perform that they wrote and arranged themselves. The contrast between the two video just showcases how talented they are when they're not held back. They've got more than 90 songs and any Band Maid fan will tell you that they're all good! My personal favorite is Yolo but My Secret Lips is pretty fantastic too. If you want something more accessible check out Blooming.

BandMaid are the best progressive hard rock band in the world. All five women are virtuoso on their instruments. Kanami is an elite songwriter. Misa and Akane (I adore her) are the Goddesses of Rhythm. Saiki is an incredible vocalist. And Miku does everything else - and formed the band. Words can't express how grateful I am to have found them about three years ago. It was life-changing. Truth.

What is most impressive other than their Top Notch musicianship is their masterful songwriting. Its one thing to be a great musician and another to apply that ability towards crafting a song that is uniquely their own. Songs that incorporate the best of Hard Rock, Metal, Funk, Punk and Pop. Their exceptional musical ability and talent allows them to Draw from a wide pallet in crafting their tracks. I have to say they are best active Hard Rock band in the world. You would be hard pressed to find a better Bass & Drum combo than Misa & Akane, They lay a solid foundation to build upon. They are both Beasts on their respective instruments. As for track recommendations I would recommend the following tracks: Puzzle, Moritorium, Secret My Lips, Real Existence, Turn Me On, Alone, Take Me Higher, Blooming, Play, well I better stop there otherwise I would list every track they have created.

Still waiting on Chase to react to this too, but Band-Maid has an alter-ego April Fools band called Band Maiko where they cover their own songs with the addition of traditional Japanese instruments. Try reacting to Secret My Lips followed by the cover Secret Maiko Lips. Crazy showcase of their versatility.

And they do it in the traditional costumes of the Maiko. Maiko is a geisha in training. Their first tune in that style was one of their existing ones. The words of the most recent of their Band-Maiko tunes, written specifically for Band-Maiko, bring that home brutally: The cute Maiko thing is also dark humor/commentary on their society's traditional expectations of women if you get the lyrics. Kyoto is also known for stories of supernatural happenings, hungry ghosts, monsters etc. It will be interesting to see if they incorporate that sometime too.

As others have said, "Freedom", from February this year, will blow your socks off as well as your hat. It's one of my favourite songs and that is a fantastic performance. I just discovered BAND-MAID myself in January of this year, and yeah, they are now one of my favourite bands. They are so good, and they all seem to be having so much fun, especially in some of the fan-cam uploads at smaller NA and Euro venues. I just adore them, and I hope they are making music together for a long, long time.

I grew up with rock and roll in the 50's and 60's and what they did here was done by most all rock bands, an instrumental to start off the show. It's been a lost art and it's not surprising that it's happening in Japan, as they have become the keepers of the flame in true rock and roll.

Moratorium is heavy my guy. I love it. I agree Freedom is one to check out. For real though, you literally can just put a BandMaid playlist on and let it ride and not be disappointed in a single song. I'm in Nashville too, and am tired of being pounded by commercial stuff that sounds generic and crap, and these ladies have lit a fire in me for music again! Next time they have a show in the USA, I'm going wherever it is.

It might just be because Eddie's recent passing has given me Van Halen on the brain, but it finally clicked why this band has made me think of Van Halen from the first time i heard them. It's not their sound, it's that they're having so damn much fun playing together. Just constantly bouncing off each other and interacting in really fun ways. I'm sure that's a trait a lot of good bands have, but god it's infectious.

@@TankTheTech Megitsune is probably one of the five songs best representing Babymetal. Top three if you only take pre-2018 era. And it's probably the only music video besides "Karate" from that era anyone should watch as a first impression. But you can say all their songs are superior as live performances (if there's no "live" in the video title it's a music video (recorded at a concert), with studio audio), because their band (Kami Band) only plays live shows. And please (!) stay away from Gimme Chocolate, it's the song that's showing the least of any of their talents and only used as a first impression to get a "wtf" reaction out of someone. If you want a live performance with band as a first impression I'd recommend Headbanger from lead singer Su's 16th birthday concert Legend 1997 in 2013 kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3mnscOGkrGsp9o.html

One thing I appreciate about these girls is that as hard as they go, they don't overdo it. They all shred but they never get /too/ flashy and I love it. Kind of expanding on this, this is something I see from women musicians more often than men. Obviously this is a sweeping generalization but when a dude can shred he will go all the way all the time, never holding back, and that can be awesome but there's something to be said for pulling it back, too. Everything these girls do absolutely fits with everything else going on in the song. They really show that you can take pure rock and roll and still innovate without going too prog. Which is perfectly fine, too, I love me some Rush, but there's something refreshing about the sound of Band-Maid that really draws me in. Other people have probably mentioned them, too, but for another take on innovating modern rock you can't go wrong with Wagakki Band. Their blending of traditional Japanese music and rock/metal is nothing short of masterful. A very different experience from Band-Maid but well worth looking into, IMO.
